Dr. Harold E. Newman became Shorter University’s 18th President on January 26, 2006. Along with an incredible vision for the institution which he serves, Dr. Newman has brought extensive knowledge of and a deep love for Shorter University to his presidency.

Under the leadership of Dr. Newman, Shorter University continues to receive significant academic recognition. During the 2009-10 academic year, Shorter was ranked for the ninth consecutive year among the South’s best comprehensive colleges focusing on Bachelor’s degrees.

Shorter was ranked for the fourth consecutive year as a “Best Southeastern College” and “Best Value College” by the Princeton Review. Shorter was one of 300 colleges nationwide selected for the Colleges of Distinction guidebook.

Dr. Newman served the University as Provost for 20 years under the direction of four different presidents. He served as interim President from January 1, 2005 until his official promotion just over one year later.

A classically trained musician, Dr. Newman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Furman University, a Master of Church Music in Piano Performance from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. At Tennessee, Dr. Newman majored in curriculum and instruction with collaterals in Higher Education and Educational Administration and Supervision.

A Message From Shorter University President, Dr. Harold E. Newman:

Shorter University is proud to be “A Christian University Committed to Excellence in Education.” Through our traditional programs in Rome and our adult degree classes in Atlanta and Rome, Shorter is a place where the mind and spirit intersect through intentional study and dialouge.

Recent years have brought growing recognition for our successes as an educational institution. In 2009, for the ninth consecutive year, U.S. News and World Report ranked Shorter among the South’s top baccalaureate colleges. We are also part of the Princeton Review’s lists as a “Best Southeastern College” and a “Best Value College.”

Our faculty, staff, administration, Board of Trustees and Board of Visitors are working hard to ensure that the University’s brightest days are ahead. I encourage you to become involved in Shorter University’s exciting future.

Sincerely,

2010 SHORTER LADY HAWKS Volleyball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com 9 DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS, BILL PETERSON

Bill Peterson is in his fourth year as Shorter University’s Director of Athletics, having set a clear course for making Shorter one of the top athletic programs in the country.

Peterson has made the desire for overall excellence the cornerstone of Hawks’ Athletics. His decisions and expertise have produced a wave of firsts in a number of programs while also allowing Shorter University to achieve several banner finishes in the National Association of Collegiate Director’s of Athletics (NACDA) Director’s Cup, including a program-best 11th-place finish following the 2009-10 academic year. Peterson was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year for 2009- 10.

Numerous sports have reached unprecedented levels of success under the direction of Peterson’s leadership. Since 2007-08, Shorter has captured 17 conference championships and won seven national titles, two team and five individual.

Volleyball won its first Southern States Athletic Conference title in 2007. Men’s cross country captured back-to-back SSAC championships in 2007 and 2008 and in 2009, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams qualified for the NAIA Championships in Vancouver, Wash., the first time both teams made the trip to nationals in the same year.

Softball has made four straight appearances in the NAIA Softball National Championship, winning three straight SSAC crowns from 2007-2009 before turning in a program- best fifth-place finish at the 2010 National Championship. Football captured its first-ever Mid-South Conference title in 2008, subsequently making its first trip to the NAIA Football Championship Series.

Men’s and women’s track and field have combined to win five Mid-South championships in the last three years while each team has also posted consecutive top 10 finishes in the country. Women’s basketball completed a third straight 20-win season in 2009-10 - the first time that has happened in program history - and advanced to the NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship for the first time since 2001.

Shorter has burst onto the national scene over the last four years, capturing a number of individual and team national championships. Montagious Brown won the school’s first-ever individual national championship in 2008 by taking first in the high jump at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Justyna Mudy followed with the school’s first-ever female national crown in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2009 NAIA Outdoor Track Championships. Mudy then won three individual national championships in 2009-10, bringing home the 2009 NAIA Cross Country title before repeating as the 3,000-meter steeplechase champion in addition to winning the 5,000-meter run at the 2010 NAIA Outdoor Championships.

Shorter Cheerleading enters the 2010-11 academic year as back-to-back national champions having brought the school its first-ever team national championships by winning the All-Girl II Intermediate title at the NCA Cheer Nationals in 2009 and 2010.

Peterson continues to push Shorter into the national spotlight. In January 2008, the NAIA announced that Peterson, Shorter University and Rome-Floyd County had been awarded the bid for the 2008 and 2009 NAIA Football National Championship to be held at the Hawks’ home football facility, Barron Stadium. Because of the rampant success of the 2008 and 2009

10 2010 SHORTER LADY HAWKS Volleyball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com championship games, Barron Stadium will once again serve as the host site for the 2010 NAIA Football National Championship.

Not only does Peterson expect excellence on the field and court, but he does so in the classroom as well. In 2009-10, Shorter placed 111 athletes on their respective Academic All-Conference teams while also boasting 23 NAIA Scholar-Athletes, a list that included the 2009-10 Southern States Athletic Conference Female Honor Student-Athlete in Whitni Tucker, the second straight year that a Shorter athlete has garnered that award after Becca Thomas won the honor in 2008-09.

Prior to taking the helm of the Hawks’ athletic program, Peterson served three years in the position of recruiting coordinator for the Shorter University football team.

He came to Shorter from Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Ga., where he served as head baseball coach. In 2005, Peterson led Mount Paran to a school record 24 wins and a berth in the state finals while being named the Atlanta-Journal Constitution Coach of the Year.

Prior to coaching, Peterson was President and Co-Founder of Horizon Medical Products (HMP), a publicly traded corporation headquartered in Atlanta.

Peterson played collegiate football at Texas Lutheran College where he was a member of the 1974 NAIA national championship team coached by the legendary Jim Wacker. He finished college at State University where he graduated in 1978 with a degree in Accounting.

Peterson’s father, Bill Sr., is credited with bringing the professional passing game to college football. Bill Sr. coached at Florida State from 1960-70, at Rice University in 1971 and for the Houston Oilers of the National Football League (NFL) from 1972-73.

Peterson and his wife, Joanna, have four children: Will, Molly, Ben and Sam. Will was a senior tight end for the 2008 Mid- South Western Division champion Shorter football team and Ben is a freshman offensive lineman on the 2010 squad.

Volleyball looking to ride balance to first SSAC crown since 2007

2009 WAS A SPECIAL season for the Shorter University volleyball program. The list of individual and team records set was extensive and included the mark for most wins when the team rolled up 27 victories.

Yet there was still one goal that the Lady Hawks were unable to reach in a year when they solidified their place as one of the top NAIA teams in the South. Shorter came up just short in its bid for a Southern States Athletic Conference championship and a national tournament berth, something it hasn’t accomplished since 2007.

As they tackle the 2010 campaign, the Lady Hawks have a league title and national berth in their sights as they hit the floor boast- ing a veteran lineup spearheaded by five determined seniors who started their Shorter careers tasting title glory and hope to close out their careers with the same result.

“Our season rides on how our seniors play this year,” Shorter fifth- year head coach Jon Moseley said about his seniors, a special group that served as his first recruiting class on the Hill. “It’s a very good, strong class.

“It’s amazing to me that I’m about to coach that class in their senior season,” he added. “They were an important class for us at that time when we didn’t have a strong volleyball reputation. Starting their collegiate careers as freshman for the Lady Hawks are Meagan Cabrer of Jacksonville, Ala., and Kelsey Kirk of Dalton.

A setter who helped her Jacksonville High team to state titles 2007 and 2008 and a state runner-up finish last year, Cabrer is a two- time All-State first team, All-Area and All-Region pick. Kirk, a 5-10 outside hitter, prepped at Northwest Whitfield High where the lefty was an All-Region selection and picked to play in the Georgia-Ten- nessee All-Star Game.

Shorter’s future appears bright in the form of a pair of freshmen who will redshirt during the 2010 campaign: outside hitter Jasmine Crook of Ohatchee, Ala., a two-time All-State pick, and Jami Harvey of Columbus, Miss., who attended Cleveland High in Tennessee.

“We’ve done well recruiting the last two years,” said Moseley. “We now have a good reputation and more people know about our pro- gram and our school.” 2009 SSAC First Team selection, Ashley Walton

JON MOSELEY

Head Coach • 5th Season • 90-49 Career Record

Vanderbilt University, 1993 2006 SSAC Coach of the Year

Jon Moseley returns for his fifth season as head coach of the Shorter University volleyball program.

In four years at the helm of the Lady Hawks, Moseley has developed a young Shorter program into a national contender, bringing the school its first-ever Southern States Athletic Conference championship in 2007, just his second season as head coach, and helping Shorter to a pair of appearances in the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament.

In 2009, Moseley guided the Lady Hawks to a school record 27 victories and a berth in the SSAC Tournament final. In that same season, Moseley saw senior Kasi Runion become the program’s first American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) First Team All-Region selection on her way to NAIA All-America honors.

2010 SHORTER LADY HAWKS Volleyball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com 41 2009 SEASON IN REVIEW

Balanced Lady Hawk attack produces school record 27 victories

VERY RARELY DOES a collegiate athletic team come across the perfect blend of experienced leadership and talented youth.

Oftentimes, this rare combination translates into success on the playing surface, the type of success that can set records and witness the team’s individual parts achieve never before seen levels of achievement.

For the Shorter University volleyball team in 2009, that infre- quent but potent combination of wily veterans and eager newcomers mixed to perfection as the Lady Hawks reached new heights both collectively and individually.

Although they fell short of their ultimate goal - Shorter dropped a tough, five-set match in the Southern States Athletic Conference championship to rival Lee University on the Lady Flames’ home floor - the Lady Hawks solidified their place among the nation’s elite and if it had not already been accomplished, put Shorter Volleyball on the national map.

Shorter won a school record 27 matches in 2009, smashing the previous high mark of 22 wins set during head coach Jon Moseley’s first season at the helm in 2006. The Lady Hawks have won at least 21 matches in each of Moseley’s four years as head coach and with 10 wins in 2010, Moseley would reach 100 victories for his brief, yet successful, Shorter career.

50 2010 SHORTER LADY HAWKS Volleyball Guide • GoShorterHawks.com NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Welcome to the NAIA

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total edu- cational process.

The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institu- tion, the value of the conference and regional structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing Sport with Innovative Change

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 14 regions, the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, reponsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

NAIA at a Glance

The NAIA consists of nearly 300 member colleges and universities, holds 23 national championships, has serviced over 650,000 student-athletes, was the first organization to include black colleges and women in its national championships and is the first to develop a system-wide character initiative with substansive programming. 2010 Shorter University Volleyball Schedule
