2019 27Th Annual Poets House Showcase Exhibition Catalog
2019 27th Annual Poets House Showcase Exhibition Catalog Poets House | 10 River Terrace | New York, NY 10282 | poetshouse.org ELCOME to the 2019 Poets House Showcase, our annual, all-inclusive exhibition of the most recent poetry books, chapbooks, broadsides, artists’ books, and multimedia works published in the United States and W abroad. This year marks the 27th anniversary of the Poets House Showcase and features over 3,300 books from more than 800 different presses and publishers. For 27 years, the Showcase has helped to keep our collection current and relevant, building one of the most extensive collections of poetry in our nation—an expansive record of the poetry of our time, freely available and open to all. Building the Exhibit and the Poets House Library Collection Every year, Poets House invites poets and publishers to participate in the annual Showcase by donating copies of poetry titles released since January of the previous year. This year’s exhibit highlights poetry titles published in 2018 and the first part of 2019. Books have been contributed by the entire poetry community, from the publishers who send on their titles as they’re released, to the poets who mail us signed copies of their newest books, to library visitors donating books when they visit us. Every newly published book is welcomed, appreciated, and featured in the Showcase. The Poets House Showcase is the mechanism through which we build our library: a comprehensive, inclusive collection of over 70,000 poetry works, all free and open to the public. To make it as extensive as possible, we reach out to as many poetry communities and producers as we can, bringing together poetic voices of all kinds to meet the different needs and interests of our many library patrons. -
The Mid-Twentieth-Century American Poetic Speaker in the Works of Robert Lowell, Frank O’Hara, and George Oppen
“THE OCCASION OF THESE RUSES”: THE MID-TWENTIETH-CENTURY AMERICAN POETIC SPEAKER IN THE WORKS OF ROBERT LOWELL, FRANK O’HARA, AND GEORGE OPPEN A dissertation submitted by Matthew C. Nelson In partial fulfillment for the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In English TUFTS UNIVERSITY May 2016 ADVISER: VIRGINIA JACKSON Abstract This dissertation argues for a new history of mid-twentieth-century American poetry shaped by the emergence of the figure of the poetic speaker as a default mode of reading. Now a central fiction of lyric reading, the figure of the poetic speaker developed gradually and unevenly over the course of the twentieth century. While the field of historical poetics draws attention to alternative, non-lyric modes of address, this dissertation examines how three poets writing in this period adapted the normative fiction of the poetic speaker in order to explore new modes of address. By choosing three mid-century poets who are rarely studied beside one another, this dissertation resists the aesthetic factionalism that structures most historical models of this period. My first chapter, “Robert Lowell’s Crisis of Reading: The Confessional Subject as the Culmination of the Romantic Tradition of Poetry,” examines the origins of M.L. Rosenthal’s phrase “confessional poetry” and analyzes how that the autobiographical effect of Robert Lowell’s poetry emerges from a strange, collage-like construction of multiple texts and non- autobiographical subjects. My second chapter reads Frank O’Hara’s poetry as a form of intentionally averted communication that treats the act of writing as a surrogate for the poet’s true object of desire. -

Roberto Saviano's The Piranhas tells the story of the rise of one such gang and its leader, Nicolas-known to his friends and enemies as the Maharajah. Nicolas's ambitions reach far beyond doing other men's bidding: he wants to be the one giving the orders, calling the shots, and ruling the city. The Near-Death Experience: an Ancient Truth, a Modern Mystery
Guest Editorial The Near-Death Experience: An Ancient Truth, A Modern Mystery Elizabeth W. Fenske, Ph.D. International Association for Near-Death Studies ABSTRACT: The near-death experience (NDE), as an experience of whole ness, an adventure in consciousness, and a metaphoric encounter with light, links theoretical physics with the occult, the Primordial Tradition, and various religious belief systems. Light as image, vehicle, and first cause ties the NDE to mystical experience. Where science sees mystery, religion sees metaphoric truth; the NDE as spiritual quest and physical encounter beckons to both disciplines for explanation. In any keynote address, one is caught between the desire to be all things to all people -truly to set the stage for all that follows- and the desire to raise issues that can be explored at greater depth not only while we are here together, but also in the future. If I have chosen either of these directions, it is probably the latter, because I believe the near-death experience (NDE) is part of a larger picture, one that is of enormous importance to each of us. We come from many walks of life, with differing interests and needs; yet, all of us are concerned with the subject of the near-death experi Dr. Fenske is President of the International Association for Near-Death Studies, and is engaged in the private practice of psychotherapy and the integration of psychology and religion. This paper is a revised version of her keynote lecture presented at the Interna tional Association for Near-Death Studies First Annual Conference, Rosemont, PA, June 1989. -

Ledbury Poetry Festival 2019 Annual Report
1 2 Chair’s Report The 2019 Festival, celebrating its twenty second anniversary, was as vibrant, engaging and accessible as ever. Audiences were able to uncover genuine surprises as well as to experience well-established poets and writers like Margaret Atwood, Ali Smith, Roger McGough, Carol Ann Duffy, Andrew Motion and the new Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage. We would like to thank our many volunteers, our funders and sponsors, our schools and all our supporters for making the Festival what it is. We are particularly proud of our growing international links, our closer co-operation with small publishers and our developing and potential working partnerships. On a practical note, we are very pleased with growing ticket sales, which increased substantially. We are also very fortunate in our Board, and we are particularly pleased that the Festival will now have the skills and energy of a new trustee, Sandeep Parmar. Our staff too continue to work to the highest calibre, and we feel confident about the future and look forward to further promoting the enjoyment in the art of poetry by working with poets, sponsors and audiences locally, nationally and internationally. As the permanent sign at the railway station confirms: “Ledbury - Junction for Poetry”. Peter Arscott Artistic Director’s Report The 2019 Festival flexed its cultural might with an offering of 60 ticketed events, 24 free events, 4 exhibitions and 2 writing trails. High profile events included two exclusive appearances from Canada’s most respected living poet and writer Margaret Atwood, who also visited pupils at local John Masefield High School. -

The “hirer” was James Mann, a bankrupt ex-sea captain, and the slave, Lydia, was owned by a 15-year-old orphan named Elizabeth Jones, inherited on the death of Jones’s parents.2 While being punished for a minor offense, Lydia broke free and Mann shot her nonfatally.3 Authorities, finding this 1.
