• Steve Millaway, President & CEO of TechFarms, LLC • A discussion on how educational institutions, businesses and other organizations are working together to grow STEM jobs for students. A native of Panama City, Millaway is a technology entrepreneur. During his career, he has worked for both public and private companies and started eight new businesses. He is an investor in start-up companies and enjoys exploring opportunities in emerging technology. • Glen McDonald, Gulf Coast State College Vice president of Strategic Projects & Economic Development, former Senior Vice President of Applied Research Associates, 2015 LeRoy Collins Distinguished Alumni Nominee. • Gulf Coast State College Alumnus Glen McDonald recently Joined the College’s Senior Management Team. Prior to that, he was with Applied Research Associates for 22 years. He has developed and managed various scientific projects ranging from bio-aerosol research to the detection of homemade explosives for the Department of Homeland Security, but the discovery of 100% clean, alternative fuel made from waste products has been a game changer. He’ll share how one of the keys to success is effective communication.

When working with students its important to remember these key things! • Be consistent – college-wide, policies, relatable examples, active listening (don’t just say NO, give a reason • Support – be there for the students.. IT’S NOT WHAT YOU SAY but how you say it! Email, face-to-face, phone (they can hear it in your voice, smile) • Strategies – come up with solutions, modify, and control the conversation. • Resources – mental health counseling (EFSC Cares), SAIL, TRIO, Service- learning. LISTEN….. EXPLAIN…. OPTIONS SESSIONS CONTINUED..

• Session 4. - Public speaking – Tips • Breathe – breathing exercises can really help. • Take a walk – this helps with your nerves before presenting. • Be early – prepare like crazy and know the subject well!! Be prepared with answers to questions someone might ask. • Don’t apologize. • Don’t wear bright distracting colors and accessories. • If you’re good at it.. ADD it to your resume (it is a highly sought out skill). ROUNDTABLE SESSIONS 5 & 6

• Session 5. 1st year experience – College of Central Florida – See email for further clarification sent on 5/24/18 • Session 6. Advising – See Advising syllabus.. • Assigned advising – Send a personalized email at the beginning of each term to your assigned students and personalize it! • Stick to the plan of assigned advising and be consistent! CF had a 54% - 94% success rate with 30 minute appointments in place and assigned advising!! • Make time and block it out, share calendars (link Who’s next) - lunches, paperwork, case management! Get a partner to rotate with incase someone is out sick or in a meeting (this could work for us since we have a buddy system in place). Work with your front desk and stop using the word WALK-IN. • Examples: Gulf Coast – they built AA’s with specializations for transfer to prep students for UCF ect. Go the extra mile and work with them timing is everything!!! SDC BUSINESS MEETING
