Yes, I know, poor kid– Kamenashi Kazuya is Secret Garden’s posterchild for all that is confused and confusing in Japan. For the past several months my interest in gender issues in Japanese pop culture have had me following this topic of Soushokukei Danshi Nikushokukei Jyou, translated: Herbivore guys, carnivore girls. “Soushokukei danshi” describes a “trend” of ‘herbivore men’, or a group of young men (typically classified as being metrosexual) who are rejecting the typical guidelines of masculinity, and embracing an alternative style. It’s a type of Otomen syndrome, as it were, for anyone who has read the manga/seen the drama. Otomen follows the story of a young man who, on the outside appears to be a manly-man, but who secretly loves sewing, crochet, stuffed animals, strawberry parfaits and baking beautiful cakes. Soushokukei danshi have been described as being more “family oriented”, and being uninterested in women and dating. Next in line are the carnivorous girls, beautiful, intelligent, ambitious young women displaying all of the characteristics it seems the men should be displaying: charisma, confidence, focus, and guts. These go-getters have been described by the soushokukei danshi as being “scary” (I’m shaking in my boots already…). The typical dynamic spelled out by this phenomenon is a type of gender- role-reversal, where the herbivorous guys seem unable to get up the manly gumption to go after girls, but prefer to wait for the carnivorous beauty (as long as he’s not scared of her, that is) to hunt him down and snatch him up in one fell swoop (sounds okay to me…).

Sci. & Tech. 34, 3 (2013) #2013 The Acoustical Society of Japan PAPER A multi-dimensional study of the emotion in current Japanese popular music Ryo Yonedaà and Masashi Yamada Graduate School of Engineering, Kanazawa Institute of Technology, 7–1 Ohgigaoka, Nonoich, 921–8501 Japan ( Received 22 March 2012, Accepted for publication 5 September 2012 ) Abstract: Musical psychologists illustrated musical emotion with various numbers of dimensions ranging from two to eight. Most of them concentrated on classical music. Only a few researchers studied emotion in popular music, but the number of pieces they used was very small. In the present study, perceptual experiments were conducted using large sets of popular pieces. In Experiment 1, ten listeners rated musical emotion for 50 J-POP pieces using 17 SD scales. The results of factor analysis showed that the emotional space was constructed by three factors, ‘‘evaluation,’’ ‘‘potency’’ and ‘‘activity.’’ In Experiment 2, three musicians and eight non-musicians rated musical emotion for 169 popular pieces. The set of pieces included not only J-POP tunes but also Enka and western popular tunes. The listeners also rated the suitability for several listening situations. The results of factor analysis showed that the emotional space for the 169 pieces was spanned by the three factors, ‘‘evaluation,’’ ‘‘potency’’ and ‘‘activity,’’ again. The results of multiple-regression analyses suggested that the listeners like to listen to a ‘‘beautiful’’ tune with their lovers and a ‘‘powerful’’ and ‘‘active’’ tune in a situation where people were around them. I alla fall är det, utan minsta tvivel, den största uppdateringen på så här kort tid, eftersom det inte ens var två månader sedan den förra listan. Vi hade nämligen förra månaden ett litet event. En karaokemakartävling som löpte över fyra veckor. Summa summarum: Över hundra nya låtar i listan. Plus ett gäng uppdaterade versioner av sånt vi redan hade. Själv har jag se’n sist i princip bara gjort One Piece och Nichijou-låtar, så där finns det diverse nytt att hämta. Högst takt höll Nea, som dessutom fokuserade mycket på nyare populära serier. Applications such as VOCALOID can synthesize singing voices by inputting lyrics and scores, and musical expressions such as vibrato and portamento are added to the singing voices by controlling pitches. This control is crucial to synthesize natural singing voices, but users are required to edit the pitch contour precisely, which means that the sound quality depends on the skill of the user. If the singing voices were controlled by using professional singers’ musical expressions, users could synthesize natural singing voices more easily. We created a singing database composed of several singers’ vi- brato and portamento and then extracted their musical expressions and analyzed the vibrato to synthesize natural singing voices. The database consists of four professional singers (two females and two males) who sang the five Japanese vowels. The vibrato pitches were set to thirteen pitches of an octave that each singer could sing. This data- base contains not only the singers’ own singing voices but also imitations of other singers. We used the database to analyze the differences of vibrato between professional singers and to determine how to control vibrato by imper- sonation. In a previous study, a vibrato model in the form of a fundamental frequency (F0) contour was proposed to synthesize natural singing voices.
