About NASSS

Our Mission

The North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) exists to promote, stimulate, and encourage the sociological study of play, games, sport and contemporary physical culture.

Our History

At the end of the final session of the 2nd Big Ten CIC Symposium on the Sociology of Sport at the University of Minnesota (1978), Andrew Yiannakis called for the formation of a sociology of sport society. A group of about twenty interested members endorsed the need to form such a society and called for the formation of a steering committee composed of Susan Greendorfer, Lee Vander Velden, Peggy Cramer, Eldon Snyder and Yiannakis. Yiannakis was appointed Chair of this committee, Susan Greendorfer assumed the position of Treasurer and Lee Vander Velden became Secretary. The steering committee was entrusted with the task of starting a newsletter, collecting membership dues, planning for an annual conference and investigating the feasibility of starting a journal. The first newsletter, known as The NASSS Newsletter, was published in December of 1978. Andrew Yiannakis was the first editor and was later joined by John Sugden, who assumed the role of associate editor.

The 2018 Annual Conference North American Society for the Sociology of Sport October 31 – November 3, 2018 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Conference Theme: Sport Soundtrack: Sport, Music, & Culture

As early as the first Olympic Games, sport has moved to the harmonies of music. In and

throughout the event music has been used to frame the games through the “Olympic Hymn”,

“Bulger’s Dream”, and “Summon the Heroes”. Appreciatively, each representative host country

has framed the Games with their nation’s musical expression soundtrack. Across the globe,

sport and music occupy the same space to set the tone of a sporting event, serve as a backdrop

for a performance, support an athlete in their development and preparation, or facilitate the

delivery of fitness training. Sport and music as cultural institutions share a bond, some might

say they have a symbiotic relationship as they have worked together to elevate the production

and consumption of their respective products. Sport and music forge communities, imbue

national pride, and promote cultural identities.

Gary Sailes Graduate Diversity Scholarship

Gary “Doc” Sailes is an award-winning professor at Indiana University. He is widely recognized for his research and advocacy on collegiate sport access and Critical Race Theory. A champion of student-athlete development, Dr. Sailes has led Congressional hearings, and presented to the International Olympic Congress on abuses in college athletics and the value of diversity across sport. A recipient of the 2011 NASSS Distinguished Service Award, “Doc” continues his support of the NASSS community by bestowing resources that annually fund the Graduate Diversity Scholarship.

In recognition of the recommendation made by the Racial Diversity Committee in the fall of 2003, the NASSS Conference Program Committee has implemented a scholarship for a graduate student who is a member of a racial or ethnic “minority” group. The purpose of the scholarship is to create a mechanism to identify racial and/or ethnic “minority” graduate students who are doing research in the area of sport sociology, and to provide a means of supporting their work and association with NASSS. The award is for $500 to be applied toward expenses associated with attendance at the NASSS annual conference. Recipients
