IMPACT: International Journal of Research in Humanities, Arts and Literature (IMPACT: IJRHAL) ISSN (P): 2347-4564; ISSN (E): 2321-8878 Vol. 7, Issue 5, May 2019, 299-304 © Impact Journals POPULAR SHADES OF ‘COLOURISM’: AN ANALYSIS OF HUMOUR AND BODY POLITICSIN KERALA’S VISUAL CULTURE Liju Jacob Kuriakose Research Scholar, Department of English, NIT Puducherry, Karaikal, Tamil Nadu, India Received: 23 May 2019 Accepted: 24 May 2019 Published: 25 May 2019 ABSTRACT Indian cinema in general and Malayalam cinema in specific, with its unique beginnings in the realistic idealism of the black-and-white eraand its gradual shift in the 80’s to the imaginary male-centric spaces, is well critiqued upon as a shedding of social responsibility. Contemporary Malayalam cinema however, is praised for its‘new generation cinema’ wave, which ha sapparently shed both its fetish over rustic settings, anti-political undertones and patriarchal violence, to embrace an urban, post-political life of the supposed ‘new generation’ Malayalees. Such cinemas however, continue remain within the monochrome panorama of the old generation which refused to acknowledge the social other and continued to position the dark-skinned, short statured, plump bodies as a site of violence and humour where the physical body plays a part in the politics of subaltern subjugation. The indirect implication of course being that such bodies are not suited for a civil society, who remain incongruent with the realities of the modern spaces by either being violent and antagonistic or comic and out of place. The paper aims to broadly define and delineate the practices of casteism and visual untouchability being practiced in Malayalam visual media.

Films Division Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Govt. of India 24- Dr.G Deshmukh Marg MUMBAI -400 026 PRESS RELEASE Dated 22st Sept., 2020 NRITYANJALI – an ode to Indian Classical Dance and Maestros Indian Classical Dance is an umbrella term for various performing arts whose theory and practice can be traced to the Sanskrit text, Natya-Shastra, the foundational treatise for the text of which is attributed to the ancient scholar Bharata Muni. Prominent dance forms like Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Sattriya, Manipuri and Mohini Aattam are traditionally regional, all of them include music and recitation in local language or Sanskrit, and they represent a unity of core ideas in a diversity of styles, costumes and expression. After the overwhelming response to Raagotsav, an online film festival on Indian Classical Music, Films Division is presenting the first part of “Nrityanjali”, an on line festival on Indian Classical Dance and Maestros between September 23–25, 2020. Ten films on the life and works of India’s leading classical dancers will be streamed on Films Division website and You Tube channel. Nrityanjali showcases “Sitara Devi” (20 min./1995/Amar Varma), a film on doyen of Kathak Dance, hailed as the Queen of Kathak by Rabindranath Tagore, honoured with many awards including Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Kalidas Samman. “Yamini Krishnamurthy” (20 min./1981/Balwant Gargi), is on the leading Bharat Natyam exponent who also excels in Odissi and Kuchipudi. ALL-INDIA WRITERS' MEET 24-25 March 2018, Kohima, Nagaland In collaboration with Nagaland University, a two-day All-India Writers' Meet was organized on 24-25 March 2018 at Kohima, Nagaland. For the first time the Akademi organized a national-level programme at Nagaland. The very objective of this mega event was a challenge to bring reputed writers from various languages and from different parts of the country to Nagaland and usher in a new environment for the Naga writers. This was an opportunity to bring together different languages of the country with the languages of Nagaland. Dr K. Sreenivasarao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi, while welcoming the delegates, encouraged the native writers to bring out the beautiful Naga cultural and literary traditions so as to make them known to others. Dr D. Kuolie, General Council Member, Sahitya Akademi, asserted that the idea of organizing this event was a constructive endeavour, an attempt to bring the writers of the country together. Professor Temsula Ao, eminent English writer, delivered the keynote address and observed that the Nagas have a rich oral tradition, but modern generation has lost many knowledgeable story-tellers and folk-singers, which she considered as the greatest casualties of progress and development of the society. She encouraged and appreciated the younger generation to create a new tradition where the soul of oral tradition resonates with new vigour.
