  • Keeley Hawes, Philip Glenister, Dean Andrews, Marshall Lancaster, Montserrat Lombard
Ashes to Ashes (DVD) Talent: Keeley Hawes, Philip Glenister, Dean Andrews, Marshall Lancaster, Montserrat Lombard. Director: Johnny Campbell, Bille Eltringham Classification: M (Mature) Duration: 516 minutes (including 8 episodes) We rate it: Five stars. Date of review: 22nd October, 2009 Several years ago, audiences in both the UK and Australia were introduced to the wondrous BBC drama Life on Mars. Taking its name from a David Bowie song, Life on Mars followed the intriguing exploits of a 2006 Manchester cop, Sam Tyler, (played by the wonderful John Simm) who was hit by a car and seemingly sent back in time to 1973. The show functioned as a compelling psychological thriller, following Tyler’s efforts to discover what had sent him back in time (was he in a coma, dying, dreaming, or in some kind of limbo-land or Purgatory?) and his attempts to escape 1973 and get back to his life in 2006. At the same time, the show was a loving and at times hilarious re-creation of the 1970s British cop-show milieu (think of The Sweeney crossed with The Professionals, but shot with today’s filmmaking technology), and it featured the wonderful Philip Glenister as the now-iconic DCI Gene Hunt, a politically- incorrect, hilariously foul-mouthed and utterly lovable character who infuriated Tyler as often as he helped him in his various quests. Life on Mars was a critical and commercial hit, and it spawned a tremendously effective second series. The characters central to Life on Mars were both sympathetic and fascinating, the writing and direction of the episodes occasionally awe-inspiring, and the mystery at the heart of the entire show was brilliantly handled to the very end.

  • Top Pick Thursday 17 September Iview Exclusive
1 Top Pick Thursday 17 September iview exclusive Fresh Blood: Pilot Season ABC iview is pleased to announce that the Fresh Blood: Pilot Season will be launching from Thursday September 17th. Fresh Blood is an ABC TV and Screen Australia initiative, created in 2013 to kick-start the careers of young comedy writers, directors and performers. After considered deliberation, five comedy teams have been chosen from the 24 teams who delivered over 70 sketches in the first phase of Fresh Blood that screened on iview last year. The producers of one of the five pilots showcased during this season will be given the opportunity to produce their own series for ABC iview. In the running are five very different comedy pilots, created by seriously impressive, young Australian comedy talents. They are: The Record – a black comedy that looks at the relationships between different couples, all of whom strive to achieve a world record. For some, it’s their greatest achievement, for others a source of shame, but all are desperate to be recognised and remembered throughout history. Fancy Boy – rooted in dark perspectives and a uniquely bold premise, the five interwoven sketches in Fancy Boy are based in pithy and unapologetic situations setup by the disturbed minds of a distinctive new comedy collective. Aunty Donna – a narrative-to-sketch series following the fantastic and surreal lives of sketch troupe Aunty Donna. The series merges two different worlds: a day-to-day narrative following the three dysfunctional, unsuccessful sketch men, and the heightened, fantastical world of sketch. BedHead – Nick (Paul Ayre) and Sophie (Sarah Bishop) are best friends who sleep together and agree it definitely (probably) doesn’t mean anything.

  • Forget Dixon of Dock Green and Z-Cars
Name of feature “ Regan. The cop who won’t cop out. No matter how many rules he breaks. Or people” - THE Thames Television press release, 1974. angsters, Strangers, The Professionals, Hazell, Target, Shoestring, The Chinese Detective, Bergerac, Dempsey and Makepeace, Bulman… all 1970s-1980s crime shows, all involving plenty of action, and all made entirely on film, or with a high ratio of location filming in urban settings. By the time Inspector Morse and A Touch of Frost arrived on screen at the end of the 1980s, the template was set for British crime shows, now devolved to the provinces, to be made solely on film. The series that had set this whole revolution in TV crime fiction in motion – and, ultimately, TV production generally, as over the last forty years British TV drama as a whole has gradually transferred to a film-making model – was Euston Films’The Sweeney (1975-78), run by Lloyd Shirley and George Taylor as an offshoot of Thames Television. SWEENEY Named after the Cockney rhyming-slang for the Flying Squad – ‘The Sweeney Todd’ – the colourful argot also delivered such evocative terms as ‘poppy’ (money), ‘bottle’ (courage) and ‘grass’ (informer), slang which has remained part of British TV’s fictional criminal landscape ever since. Currently being repeated in the afternoon on ITV 4, with Minder (1979-1994) and The Forget Dixon of Dock Professionals (1977-1983) (and what a great three hours that is for men of a certain age), Z-Cars - it’s remarkable to see how many firsts there are in The Sweeney.
