Glasscraft Emerging Artist Award Melanie Moertel Born in 1976 in a small town in Erlangen, Germany, Melanie Moertel grew up as a single child with an artistic family back- ground. She soon discovered her love of glass and her need to be creative. After fi nishing school in 1996 she started working as a graphic designer and learned all of the basics about the use of colors, design elements, and marketing. The computer work was not fullfi lling enough, though, and she decided to go into a new direction and started making lampworked beads in October 2003. Today Melanie works as a full-time beadmaker and sup- ports herself by selling her beads, mostly online, and teaching in glass schools and studios worldwide. She works on a Bobcat torch and creates mainly with 104 COE glass. Visit www.melaniemoertel.com to view more of Melanieʼs glass art. Jeremiah (JD) Maplesden Jeremiah (JD) Maplesden began his career in 2001 and has been a self-employed artist since 2002. He has worked in beads, marbles, and solid shaping that pushed the boundaries of solid color, fume work, sandblasting, sand carving, electro- forming, and lapping. JD took Glass Alchemyʼs Color Certifi ca- tion Class in 2005 and the Color Theory and Development Class at Eugene Glass School. His training has included work with many artists including Bryan Dosher, Cesare Toffolo, Chris Roesinger, Gianni Toso, Marbleslinger, Scott Deppe, Andrew Morris, and Hops. JD has served as a teaching assistant at Reveres School to Chris Roesinger in 2007 in advanced pendants and marble designs and to Robert Mickelsen in 2008 in Graal and sandblasting.

  • Lucky Luke Shaped by Myth and History [1] by Annick Pellegrin
TRANSFORMATIONS Journal of Media & Culture http://www.transformationsjournal.org/journal/24/05.shtml ISSN 1444-3775 Issue No. 24 2014 — The Other Western “I Knew Killing a Man Would Kill You”: Lucky Luke Shaped by Myth and History [1] By Annick Pellegrin The two most successful creations of American movies are the gangster and the Westerner: men with guns. Guns as physical objects, and the postures associated with their use, form the visual and emotional center of both types of films. - Robert Warshow, The Immediate Experience, 135 Born in 1946 in the comic magazine Spirou, and pre-published in its pages until 1968 (Mellot 21), the comic series Lucky Luke recounts the adventures of the phlegmatic and lanky Lucky Luke as he travels across the Wild West together with his talking horse, Jolly Jumper. Although he is a cowboy, Lucky Luke is rarely depicted herding cows and is more often seen serving his country as a court officer, as a “special government employee,” as a sheriff or as a mayor (du Chatenet 697-99). In addition to entirely fictional characters, Lucky Luke is known for featuring historical characters, such as Calamity Jane and Jesse James, as well as numerous caricatures of celebrities (Delporte 19-28). Lucky Luke’s physique itself was inspired by that of five actors from the US: Tom Mix, William Hart, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Gary Cooper (du Chatenet 697). While the creator of Lucky Luke – the Belgian Morris – collaborated with numerous scriptwriters, Lucky Luke was his only comic series (Filippini, “Les « seconds Rôles » dans Lucky Luke” 25) and he was the sole artist of the series until he passed away.

SEEING THE PAST: JESSE JAMES AND AMERICAN HISTORY IN MOTION PICTURES By Clinton Scott Loftin Thesis Advisor: Dr. Nathan Godfried An Abstract of the Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts (in History) May, 2000 Historically-based films often reveal more about the time in which they were made than about their historical subjects. Three motion pictures about Jesse James made in three very different eras reveal more about contemporary history than they do about the facts surrounding the legendary outlaw’s life. While each film, in some way, purports to tell the “true” story of Jesse James’ life, each offers a different history of that life. In order to understand the reasons for this it is necessary to examine the events that surrounded the making of each picture. More specifically, there are four major forces that must be examined in order to understand Jesse James’ transformation in the three pictures: the socio-political environment at the time each film was made, the state of the motion picture industry, developments within the genre to which the films belong (the Western), and the unique contributions of individual filmmakers.

  • Saddle up for the Friends of the James Farm Reunion
James Farm Journal jessejames.org Volume 29 Issue 3 We are pleased to announce the date and details of our 2018 Reunion, taking place on August 11! All the information you need is below. We have lined up some excellent educational and entertainment programs. We hope to see lots of you there! We had a very sad occurrence this month with the unexpected death of Harold Dellinger, who had recently returned to our board of directors. He had led the William Clark Quantrill Society for the past few years and had organized some of the greatest Civil War bus tours I have ever had the opportunity to experience. On the last excursion, we even went past the long closed and locally famous Peckerwood Club; a BY BRYAN IVLOW gambling and drinking establishment. Harold recently donated a large book collection to the Farm and was planning a tour of little known features on the Farm for our Reunion. It sadly falls to us now to dedicate a tree and a memorial marker for him at that event instead. He will be greatly missed. Saddle Up for the Friends of the James Farm Reunion Saturday 11 August 2018 Here we go, Folks! The event you have all been waiting for! This is a great opportunity to socialise with like minded James enthusiasts and soak up the history and nostalgia of the old James family homestead. We have an exciting afternoon of events lined up for you to enjoy! At 1pm there will be a tree and plaque dedication for This Issue Harold Dellinger.
