BUDAWANGIA* AN E-NEWSLETTER FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED IN THE NATIVE PLANTS OF THE NSW SOUTH COAST Contact: Dr Kevin Mills – [email protected] No. 46 – January 2016 Aims: To connect those interested in the native flora of the NSW South Coast, to share up to date information on the flora of the region and to broaden the appreciation of the region’s native plants. Editorial Not unusual for Christmas/New Year, the rain came just in time to interrupt the plans of many holiday makers on the coast. The wet beginning to January continued on and off, alternating with hot and humid weather, the total for the month well above average at Jamberoo. Summer storms marked the end of the month. This month’s edition is a mixed bag of pieces, beginning with an article on a new species of Banksia described for the Jervis Bay area. Other pieces include a note on forests of Large-leaved Privet in Jamberoo Valley, Wetland Plant No. 14, a new mystery weed and another ‘plant of the month’. The editorial team out there are slacking off! I mentioned an article on identifying elkhorns and staghorns in the November issue, but it was not therein as I had moved it; the piece appears this month. Below is note on a common Australian genus, the first in a short series to follow in subsequent editions of Budawangia. Eucalyptus - ‘well-covered’, referring to the operculum covering the flower bud. The first named species was Eucalyptus obliqua (Myrtaceae), gathered from Bruny Island, Tasmania in 1777 during Cook’s Third Voyage and later named in London by the French botanist L’Heritier. -

ACorresponding author; email: [email protected] Abstract: The resprouting response of plant species to fire is a key life history trait that has profound effects on post-fire population dynamics and community composition. This study documents the post-fire response (resprouting and maturation times) of woody species in six contrasting formations in the New England Tableland Bioregion of eastern Australia. Rainforest had the highest proportion of resprouting woody taxa and rocky outcrops had the lowest. Surprisingly, no significant difference in the median maturation length was found among habitats, but the communities varied in the range of maturation times. Within these communities, seedlings of species killed by fire, mature faster than seedlings of species that resprout. The slowest maturing species were those that have canopy held seed banks and were killed by fire, and these were used as indicator species to examine fire immaturity risk. Finally, we examine whether current fire management immaturity thresholds appear to be appropriate for these communities and find they need to be amended. Kerry Steller (editor) Our feature article this season on Butterflies and Skippers was written by David Britton in 2002 and David has kindly updated this for us. Dr David Britton worked for UNE, leaving some years ago to be the collection manager of entomology at the Australian Museum in Sydney and now lives with tropical butterflies in Cairns. This article was written while David was living in Armidale. David’s article includes known food plants for many species. If you have identified butterflies or caterpillars feeding on other plant species we would be interested to know. For example, Peter Metcalfe says that while the caterpillars of Orchard Swallowtails usually eat leaves of citrus trees, Correas are in the same family as citrus and could be hosts for these lovely big butterflies, however David has seen the eggs laid but has not seen the larvae survive past the third moult. -

Discovery and mode of action of cyclotides Anjaneya Swamy Ravipati MSc, M.Phil A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 Institute for Molecular Bioscience Abstract Cyclotides are plant derived macrocyclic peptides featuring a cyclic cystine knot (CCK) formed by six cysteine residues on a head-to-tail cyclic backbone. Their unique structural features make them exceptionally stable against thermal, enzymatic or chemical degradation. Naturally isolated cyclotides have many pharmaceutically important activities, including uterotonic, anti-HIV, antimicrobial and anticancer properties. The combination of structural features and biological activities make cyclotides an attractive framework in drug design applications. To date over 300 cyclotides have been discovered in five plant families: Violaceae, Rubiaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Fabaceae and Solanaceae. However, their origin and distribution in the plant kingdom remains unclear. In this thesis a total of 206 plants belonging to 46 different plant families have been screened for expression of cyclotides. In this screening program, 50 novel cyclotides were discovered from 31 plant species belonging to the Rubiaceae and Violaceae families. Interestingly, all the Violaceae species possess cyclotides supporting the hypothesis that the Violaceae is a rich source of cyclotides. As a matter of fact, cyclotides have been found in every plant species belonging to the Violaceae family screened so far. It is noteworthy that a novel suite of Lys-rich cyclotides were discovered from Melicytus chathamicus and M. latifolius belonging to the Violaceae family which are endemic to remote islands of Australia and New Zealand. Unlike generic cyclotides, Lys-rich cyclotides possess higher positive charge, which correlates with their earlier retention times in RP-HPLC indicative of lower hydrophobic properties. -

Abstract: The fires of January 2003 burnt much of the treeless high mountain country of Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, and were the first extensive conflagration of this area since 1939. For this reason there are remarkably few studies of the response of alpine plants and vegetation to fire. A flora survey of treeless subalpine vegetation in the Kosciuszko area in late 2002 sampled 215 sites. Of the 119 sites that were burnt, 60 were relocated and re-sampled in late 2003 to assess the mode and extent of regeneration in a range of treeless plant communities. Twenty-four species (including 3 exotics) were recorded only in the pre-fire sampling. Fifty species (including 18 exotics) were recorded only in the post-fire sampling. One species, Chenopodium erosum, had not previously been recorded in Kosciuszko National Park, and is believed to be the first native chenopod recorded in alpine vegetation in Australia. There was no significant difference in mean number of species per quadrat between pre-fire and post-fire quadrats. The average number of weeds per quadrat was, however, significantly greater post-fire. Most of this difference was attributable to the significantly greater number of weeds per quadrat in bog vegetation after the fire.
