Recommended by John Lennon By Linda Marshall-Smith I was informed of this book by none other than John Lennon! But not years ago, just recently. In the book, "The John Lennon Letters," edited by Hunter Davis, Lennon recommends "The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away" several times. Lennon's letter to photographer Jurgen Vollmer dated April 1975 (Vollmer was a friend from The Beatles Hamburg days and the photographer whose work appears as the cover for Lennon's Rock and Roll album) states in a postscript: "there's a book coming out -- 'Macmillan Publishers' -- its by Allan Williams (he took us to Hamburg first) -- it's all about 'THEN'-- Liverpool/Hamburg -- pre Brian Epstein -- it's called 'THE MAN WHO GAVE AWAY THE BEATLES.' -- Quite funny -- and sad." In a letter to journalist Robert Weinstein (dated, "june already" 1975) who had written John for confirmation on some facts regarding a record The Beatles cut in Hamburg, Lennon adds this postscript (spelling the author's first name incorrectly, among other typos, which I am including here for authenticity): "Ther's a very good book on those days called 'The Man Who Gave the Beatles Away' (Alun Williams)* I've forgotten which publisher ... it's new, but available. *he was our first 'manager' ... he took us to Hamburg ... tra la la' Excuse typing!" Sometime later, possibly 1976, Lennon responded to a short survey from a fan named Mark who asked: "Have you read Allan Williams' 'The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away?' Lennon's reply: "Yes" "Is it completely true or has the story been fictionalized somewhat?..." Lennon's reply: "Mostly true." "How do you look back upon your early years in Liverpool and Hamburg?" Lennon's reply: "From a distance." My interest was sparked. Upon reading "The Man Who Gave the Beatles Away," I couldn't help but note that Williams was not always that flattering toward John Lennon, yet, Lennon declares it's "mostly true," and found it a "very good book," "quite funny -- and sad." I enjoyed reading about the Beatles early years from the perspective of a man who hired them for odd jobs (cleaning bathrooms and painting murals on the walls of his Liverpool club) to supporting their decision not to cut Stuart Sutcliffe from the band even though he could not play a note to save his life. But fans of the boy-next-door Beatles proceed with caution. You'll find out a bit more about your fab four than you may have bargained for. Williams pulls no punches, painting the boy-next-door Beatles (aka Brian Epstein) as whoring, touring, cussing, drunk and disorderly kids sowing their oats (just like Doris) as they honed their musical chops in the dark, dank, dubious clubs of Hamburg and Liverpool. Williams takes you on a wild ride of the proverbial sex, drugs and rock and roll antics of five red-blooded British lads, belting out American Rock and Roll in Liverpool and German clubs, but you almost don't want the story to end, because we all know how it does end. By james lythgoe I read this book the first time in the mid 70's when I was laying out from school one day. It was so engaging, I read it in a day. There were details that were a little shocking for my age! It was quite an education. The book shows them as they were, and their environment as it was. TAke a deep breath and enjoy. The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away By SINE Skeet For anyone who wants to learn how to incubate, then lose an musical empire; this is your instruction manual for such a boondoggle. There are many antedotes of the Liverpool and German club years that some of The Beatles' most diehard fans have never heard. Lots of great gossip and a few rare photographs of the people who were there in the early years. Not a great piece of literature, but many funny and tragic insights into the assembly of The Beatles from a man who supported the lads in their formative years. And just when The Fab Four were ready to make an artistic breakthrough, he tired of the game and sold the rights to "RocknRoll's Golden Fleece" to Brian Epstein for a pence. That is pretty much where The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away ends; at the beginning of what became the British Invasion and a world cultural revolution. See all 14 customer reviews...     The History of International Beatleweek International Beatleweek celebrates the most famous band in the world in the city where it was born – attracting thousands of Fab Four fans and dozens of bands to Liverpool each year. The history of Beatleweek goes back to 1977 when Liverpool’s first Beatles Convention was held at Mr Pickwick’s club in Fraser Street, off London Road. The two-day event, staged in October, was organised by legendary Cavern Club DJ Bob Wooler and Allan Williams, entrepreneur and The Beatles’ early manager, and it included live music, guest speakers and special screenings. In 1981, Liz and Jim Hughes – the pioneering couple behind Liverpool’s pioneering Beatles attraction, Cavern Mecca – took up the baton and arranged the First Annual Mersey Beatle Extravaganza at the Adelphi Hotel. It was a one-day event on Saturday, August 29 and the special guests were Beatles authors Philip Norman, Brian Southall and Tony Tyler. In 1984 the Mersey Beatle event moved to St George’s Hall where guests included former Cavern Club owner Ray McFall, Beatles’ press officer Tony Barrow, John Lennon’s uncle Charles Lennon and ‘Father’ Tom McKenzie. Cavern Mecca closed in 1984, and after the city council stepped in for a year to keep the event running, in 1986 Cavern City Tours was asked to take over the Mersey Beatle Convention. It has organised the annual event ever since. International bands started to make an appearance in the late 1980s, with two of the earliest groups to make the journey to Liverpool being Girl from the USA and the USSR’s Beatle Club.

    BEATLES HISTORY – PART ONE: 1956–1964 January 1956–June 1957: The ‘Skiffle Craze’ In January 1956, Lonnie Donegan’s recording of “Rock Island Line” stormed into the British hit parade and started what would become known as the ‘skiffle craze’ in Great Britain (vgl. McDevitt 1997: 3). Skiffle was originally an amateur jazz style comprising elements of blues, gospel, and work songs. The instrumentation resembled New Or- leans street bands called ‘spasms,’ which relied on home-made instru- ments. Before skiffle was first professionally recorded by American jazz musicians in the 1920s and 1930s, it had been performed at ‘rent parties’ in North American cities like Chicago and Kansas City. Many African- American migrant workers organized rent parties in order to raise money for their monthly payments (vgl. Garry 1997: 87). Skiffle provided the musical entertainment at these parties, as everybody was able to partici- pate in the band, which usually consisted of home-made acoustic guitars or a piano backed by a rhythm section of household instruments, such as a washboard, a washtub bass, and a jug (vgl. McDevitt 1997:16). Jazz trumpeter and guitarist Ken Colyer pioneered the skiffle scene in Great Britain. In 1949, he formed the Crane River Jazz Band in Cran- ford, Middlesex, together with Ben Marshall (guitar), Pat Hawes (wash- board), and Julian Davies (bass). Their repertoire included skiffle songs “to illustrate aspects of the roots of jazz and to add variety to a pro- gramme” (Dewe 1998: 4). After leaving the group in 1951, Colyer mi- grated to the United States to work with jazz musicians in New Orleans.

Spencer Leigh The Cavern Club: The Rise of The Beatles and Merseybeat written many books about music; mostly centring on the Beatles and Merseybeat. He has, indeed, also written previous books about the Cavern, all of which grace my bookshelves. This book has a foreward written by Sir Paul McCartney and this immediately informs us of a very important fact.

    MOVIES ABOUT THE BEATLES Early Beatles History: 1940-1964 Birth of The Beatles In 1978, Elvis – The Movie premiered on American television. The pro- duction was a dramatization of Elvis Presley’s life, featuring Kurt Rus- sell as Elvis. His unexpected death the year before had revived the public interest in ‘The King,’ and countless biographies invaded the market. The movie spawned several fictional and/or biographical films about po- pular culture icons, such as Buddy Holly (The Buddy Holly Story, 1978) and The Beatles (Birth of The Beatles, 1979). In the 1980s and 1990s, only a handful of pop biographies were successful at the box office, i. e. Luis Valdez’ La Bamba (1987) about Richie Valens, Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991) and Iain Softley’s Backbeat (1993). More recently, Holly- wood has produced a string of highly successful TV and cinema biogra- phies of musical heroes. The most notable films and series are The Rat Pack (1998) about the lives and times of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., Ray (2004) about Ray Charles, Stoned (2005) about The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones, and – again – Elvis (2005). Starting with Birth of The Beatles, The Beatles’ history has been dramatized in various forms for television as well as for the cinema. While The Beat- les’ early group history has been dealt with in Birth of The Beatles (1979), Backbeat (1993), and In His Life: The John Lennon Story (2000), John Lennon’s private life was explored in John and Yoko: A Love Story (1985) and The Hours and Times (1991).

    Review: The Beatles Anthology [Original version published in German in the Badische Zeitung, 4 November 2000] For more than thirty-five years, the Beatles have credited their musical success to the long hours they spent playing in Hamburg, before they were discovered by Brian Epstein and then the rest of the world. Now it’s the official story: The Beatles Anthology (367 pp. Chronicle Books $60), the group’s collective ‘autobiography’ published October 5th, describes how their musical apprenticeship served on the Reeperbahn produced the sound that defined the 1960s and, arguably, popular music ever since. Told through the words of surviving band members Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, supplemented by extensive culling of old interviews with John Lennon, the history of the band is recounted from its beginnings as the Quarrymen in 1957 to the final acrimonious breakup in 1970. Like the television series and CD-sets to which it is a companion, Anthology is meant to be a picture of their life as a band from the inside—what it was like “in the eye of the hurricane,” as McCartney puts it. To hear the Beatles tell it, the seven-hour sets in Hamburg under pressure to “make a show” and bring in customers transformed their music, so much so that when they returned to England after their first stint in Hamburg, the world had its first taste of Beatlemania. Billed as “The Beatles—Direct from Hamburg!”, when they began playing in the Litherland Town Hall in Liverpool (27 December 1960), for the first time the crowd spontaneously rushed the stage in the frenzy that would become familiar in the succeeding years.
