Vermiculariopsiella acaciae Fungal Planet description sheets 345

Fungal Planet 411 – 4 July 2016 Vermiculariopsiella acaciae Crous, M.J. Wingf., sp. nov. Etymology. Name refers to Acacia, the plant from which this Notes — Based on ITS DNA sequence data Vermiculariop was collected. siella acaciae is 97 % (539/557) similar to V. dichapetali (CPC Classification — Chaetosphaeriaceae, , 22463; GenBank KJ869129.1; from leaves of Dichapetalum rho . desicum, Botswana) and 89 % (489/548) similar to V. eucalypti described elsewhere in the present study. Morphologically, the Sporodochia on SNA and OA erumpent, crystalline, to 450 µm latter two species can be distinguished from V. dichapetali in diam, with brown, erect setae distributed throughout conidio having much larger conidiogenous cells (20–40 × 2.5–3 μm), se- ma, thick-walled, roughened, flexuous, 180–250 × 4–5 µm, tae (100–300 × 6–10 μm, 6–12-septate), and lacking dimorphic 5–7-septate, tapering to an obtuse apex. Conidiophores aggre- conidia (Crous et al. 2014a). The closest hits using a megablast gated in stroma, subcylindrical, 1–2-septate, branched or not, search of the LSU DNA sequence data are 99 % (816/819) simi- 25–40 × 3–4 µm. Conidiogenous cells terminal, subcylindrical, lar to Vermiculariopsiella dichapetali (GenBank KJ869186.1; pale brown to hyaline, smooth to verruculose, at times curved incertae sedis, Microascales), 96 % (820/857) to Dictyochaeta at the apex, 15–27 × 2.5–3 µm, apex 1.5 µm diam, collarette cylindrospora (GenBank EF063575.1; Chaetosphaeriaceae, flaring, 1–2 µm long. Conidia dimorphic. On OA solitary, hyaline, Chaetosphaeriales), 94 % (793/841) to Dactylaria parvispora guttulate, aseptate, straight to slightly curved, inequilateral with (GenBank EU107296.1; Orbiliaceae, Orbiliales) and 94 % (808/ inner plane straight, outer plane convex, apex subobtusely 858) to Cryptadelphia groenendalensis (GenBank EU528007.1; rounded, base truncate with excentric hilum, 0.5–1 µm diam, incertae sedis). (14–)18–22(–25) × 3(–3.5) µm. On SNA forming ellipsoid, straight, hyaline, smooth, guttulate conidia, apex subobtusely rounded, base truncate, 4–7 × 2–2.5 µm. Culture characteristics — Colonies reaching up to 40 mm diam after 2 wk at 25 °C, with spreading, flat surface; margins smooth, lobate, and sparse aerial mycelium. On MEA surface pale luteous, reverse luteous. On OA surface dirty white to pale luteous. On PDA surface and reverse dirty white.

Typus. France, La Réunion, S21°5'45.7" E55°33'3.6", on leaves of Acacia heterophylla (Fabaceae), 7 Mar. 2015, P.W. Crous & M.J. Wingfield (holotype CBS H-22599, culture ex-type CPC 26291 = CBS 141289; ITS sequence GenBank KX228263.1, LSU sequence GenBank KX228314.1, MycoBank MB817023).

Colour illustrations. Leaf spots on Acacia heterophylla; sporodochia sporulating on OA, conidiophores, setae and dimorphic conidia. Scale bars = 10 µm.
