Both the teaching and support staff are looking forward to guiding your child through their years of primary education. The school is situated in the fishing village of Johnshaven and is zoned to also include the surrounding rural area. You will notice that the school badge reflects the link between the land and the sea. The school building dates back to the late 1800s and has been extended and modernised over the years. It now provides a safe, well-resourced learning environment. The staff work as a team to ensure that your child’s individual needs are met and that he/she is able, through high quality teaching and pupil support, to fulfil his/her potential. There are Scottish Tourist signposts and an attractive gateway feature to welcome all visitors. It is a village in which fishing remains an important aspect with lobsters and crabs being the main ‘catch of the day’ and many holiday-makers still make their way to Johnshaven in the summer months. To cater for this there are many holiday homes and a well-appointed caravan site adjacent to the public park. Tourists enjoy the variety of walks along the coastal paths. This attractive, conservation village is home to people who commute to Aberdeen and Dundee and many families are employed in the North Sea Oil Industry. History fails to record who Johnshaven was named after, but in 1722 it was said to be amongst the most important fishing towns in Scotland. Local facilities include two hotels, a general store/post office, a beauty salon, fish houses and an art and craft studio. The latter is supported by a number of enthusiastic local artists. Johnshaven School Johnshaven School provides education for children aged 5 – 12 i.e. from P1–P7. Johnshaven School has a teaching Head Teacher and 2 part-time teaching staff. There are visiting specialist teachers for P.E, Spanish and French and for those pupils who have additional support needs. The school also works closely with a range of other support agencies. Our Active Schools Co-ordinator provides a range of additional active and sporting activities for the children. The pupils are also supported by 2 Pupil Support Assistants and the remaining staff included 1 school administrator, 1 admin support assistant, 1 kitchen staff, 1 cleaner and a part time janitor. On leaving Johnshaven School the pupils transfer to Mackie Academy, Stonehaven. Johnshaven School is part of the Stonehaven Community Schools’ Network and works closely with the other 10 schools in the Network. The school has a very supportive Parent Council, Friends of Johnshaven School (FoJ). This group supports school improvement activities and raises additional funds to provide many extras for the pupils in the school. Community links are a valued part of school life. The school runs a weekly ‘Drop-In’ community café and there are after school sports and activity clubs. The Head Teacher is invited to attend Community Council meetings and there are also strong links with the village Heritage Association and the ‘Shark’ Environmental Group. A teacher serves on the steering group for Friends of Benholm Mill. Devolved budgets are managed in accordance with Aberdeenshire Council guidelines in order to support planned improvements in the school. - 7 - Serving Aberdeenshire from mountain to sea – the very best of Scotland HMIe last inspected the school in Feb 2011 The school is accredited at commended level as a Health Promoting School, has a bronze Enterprise Award and a Silver Eco School Award. Visits of Prospective Parents Prospective parents can contact the School Office and request an appointment to come and visit the school and meet with the Head Teacher. During this visit you will get a tour of the school and have an opportunity to ask any questions and discuss any particular needs for your child(ren). Admission/Enrolment Primary Admissions New entrants to P1 are enrolled early in the calendar year for entry to school in August. This is for children who will be five on or before the school start date in August. Those whose fifth birthday is between the August start date each year and the end of February the following year may also be admitted. Details of the enrolment dates are advertised in the local press by Aberdeenshire Education & Children’s Services Department.
