Ashes Tour 29 July to 20 August 2019. 24 Club Members and 12 partners formed our touring party, which enjoyed Ireland, Wales and England. On arrival in Dublin, we enjoyed a bus tour to dinner at Johnnie Fox’s Traditional Irish Pub (established in 1798), giving us the flavour of Irish food, beer as well as Irish singing and dancing. Our first game was in County Wicklow playing at Peter Savill’s private cricket ground. The oval is located at his horse stud, where a number of his successful racing horses are bred and trained. After sightseeing for a day, we played a game against Leinster C.C. near the centre of Dublin. Then it was off to Wales/England via sea ferry and bus where we stayed in a magnificent hotel in the heart of Bristol again enjoying the sites, before we played the Wales over 50’s C.C. at Cwmbran, Wales. Our next lunch stop was the lovely Roman town Bath, on our way to Oxford. We had five games at Oxford, which were part of a Cricket Festival put on by our sister club, South Oxfordshire Amateurs. All the games were played on the university grounds along the Thames, such a picturesque part of England. Before we left Oxford, we enjoyed a River cruise on the Thames past the Cross Keys Hotel and the rowing club pavilions along the famous river. Now it was time for London where we enjoyed 9 days of holiday. We were able to see a couple of days of the exciting Ashes Test at Lords between the rain. Our traditional last game of the tour was at Meopham CC in Kent, where we are always royally welcomed and hosted at the Village Green ground. A highlight of the tour was to watch Melbourne Cricket Club defeat the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lords on day 6 for the first time since these matches started back in 1993. Page | 4 Season Fixture Season included 16 games in Melbourne, NSW and country Victoria over the season, winning six, losing six, with one wash out and three cancelled. Our last game of our fixture, in March, was cancelled due to the Covid-19 virus. Our regional games included Puckapunyal Army Barracks VIC, The Village Green at Strath Creek VIC, The Bradman Oval at Bowral NSW, and Avery’s Paddock, Port Fairy, VIC. Annual Dinner 26th September 2019 A good crowd gathered for our Traditional Grand final week Dinner, to hear the Australian “T20 and One Day” Captain, Aaron Finch give us some insight into the highs and lows of the short form game and the pressure it has on players in a hectic schedule. Boxing Day Test Functions Once again, the days were well supported even though we were bumped from our traditional Boxing Day function, to Day 2. Long Room Lunches 13 March 2020 We were only able to have one last season due to, the Ashes Tour, and Covid-19, however It was well supported and used as an event for a Reunion of the Ashes Touring party, with great success. Our Guest Speaker, Seb Gotch, had just come off two centuries (the first being his maiden century) with the Victorian side, so he was full of confidence about the success of the VICS for the rest of the Season. Thanks I wish to thank (a) your XXIX Club Committee members, for their drive, to continually improve the experience for you, the Members, (b) plus our Players, Umpires, Scorers, and Team Managers who contributed to a successful season, (c) the MCC Parent Club Committee for their support of the XXIX Club. I wish to also thank the curators of our grounds, particularly Glenn Arnup (Albert Ground) and Scott West (Beaumaris S C); it is a privilege to be able to play on these quality grounds. A special thanks to Steven McCooke and Liam Dimattina in the MCC Office, for their assistance in making the XXIX Club work, and finally thanks to John Anderson for being our resident MC at our functions; a true professional. Therefore, through no fault of our own the social calendar was a little light on over the past 12 months. 2019/20 year Annual Dinner – Thursday 26 th September Our traditional Grand Final week Annual dinner continued again this year where we had the pleasure of 225 members and guests in the MCC Dining Room to be entertained by our guest speaker Aaron Finch. We only broke even as a result here, however this was up from last year where we made a small loss. Long Room Lunches We only had the one Long Room Lunch this year on Friday 13 March 2020, just before “lock down”. Seb Gotch from MCC & Cricket Victoria interviewed well with John Anderson, who also invited, Neil “Spider” Williams, Sandy Roberts, & Paul Barker to the podium for a bit of Q&A. We had 96 Attendees, including 22 x UK Tour 2019 attendees which made for an afternoon of some great catch ups. We made a small profit here showing revenue of $9,210 against $8,593 of expenses.

Pakistan claimed the honours in the dress rehearsal for the final with a memo- rable victory over the world champions in a dramatic day/night encounter at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. The game lived up to its billing right from the onset as Saeed Anwar and Saleem Elahi tore into the Australia attack. Elahi was in particularly impressive form, blast- ing 79 from 91 balls as Pakistan plundered 290 from their 50 overs. But, never wanting to be outdone, the Australians responded in fine style with Adam Gilchrist attacking the Pakistan bowling with equal relish. The wicketkeep- er sensationally raced to his 20th one-day international half-century in just 29 balls on his way to a quick-fire 70. Once Saqlain Mushtaq had ended his 44-ball knock however, skipper Waqar Younis stepped up to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The pace star is bowling as well as he has done in years as his side come to the end of their tour of England and his figures of six for 59 fully deserved the man of the match award and to take his side to victory.

  • Cricket Memorabilia Society Postal Auction Closing at Noon 10
CRICKET MEMORABILIA SOCIETY POSTAL AUCTION CLOSING AT NOON 10th JULY 2020 Conditions of Postal Sale The CMS reserves the right to refuse items which are damaged or unsuitable, or we have doubts about authenticity. Reserves can be placed on lots but must be agreed with the CMS. They should reflect realistic values/expectations and not be the “highest price” expected. The CMS will take 7% of the price realised, the vendor 93% which will normally be paid no later than 6 weeks after the auction. The CMS will undertake to advertise the memorabilia for auction on its website no later than 3 weeks prior to the closing date of the auction. Bids will only be accepted from CMS members. Postal bids must be in writing or e-mail by the closing date and time shown above. Generally, no item will be sold below 10% of the lower estimate without reference to the vendor.. Thus, an item with a £10-15 estimate can be sold for £9, but not £8, without approval. The incremental scale for the acceptance of bids is as follows: £2 increments up to £20, then £20/22/25/28/30 up to £50, then £5 increments to £100 and £10 increments above that. So, if there are two postal bids at £25 and £30, the item will go to the higher bidder at £28. Should there be two identical bids, the first received will win. Bids submitted between increments will be accepted, thus a £52 bid will not be rounded either up or down. Items will be sent to successful postal bidders the week after the auction and will be sent by the cheapest rate commensurate with the value and size of the item.

  • Leg Before Wicket Douglas Miller Starts to Look at the Most Controversial Form of Dismissal
Leg Before Wicket Douglas Miller starts to look at the most controversial form of dismissal Of the 40 wickets that fell in the match between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan at Cheltenham that ended on 1st August 2010 as many as 18 of the victims were dismissed lbw. Was this, I wondered, a possible world record? Asking Philip Bailey to interrogate the files of Cricket Archive, I discovered that it was not: back in 1953/54 a match between Patiala and Delhi had seen 19 batsmen lose their wickets in this way. However, until the start of the 2010 season the record in English first-class cricket had stood at 17, but, barely credibly, Cheltenham had provided the third instance of a match with 18 lbws in the course of the summer. Gloucestershire had already been involved in one of these, against Sussex at Bristol, while the third occasion was the Sussex-Middlesex match at Hove. Was this startling statistic for 2010 an indication that leg before decisions are more freely given nowadays? It seemed to correlate with an impression that modern technology has given umpires a better feel for when a ball is likely to hit the wicket and that the days when batsmen could push forward and feel safe were now over. I determined to dig deeper and examine trends over time. This article confines itself to matches played in the County Championship since World War I. I propose looking at Tests in a future issue. The table below shows how the incidence of lbw dismissals has fluctuated over time.
