Chairman’s Report

It is with pleasure that I present my Chairman’s report for the Season 2019-2020.

Ashes Tour 29 July to 20 August 2019.

24 Club Members and 12 partners formed our touring party, which enjoyed Ireland, Wales and England. On arrival in Dublin, we enjoyed a bus tour to dinner at Johnnie Fox’s Traditional Irish Pub (established in 1798), giving us the flavour of Irish food, beer as well as Irish singing and dancing. Our first game was in County Wicklow playing at Peter Savill’s private cricket ground. The oval is located at his horse stud, where a number of his successful racing horses are bred and trained. After sightseeing for a day, we played a game against Leinster C.C. near the centre of Dublin. Then it was off to Wales/England via sea ferry and bus where we stayed in a magnificent hotel in the heart of Bristol again enjoying the sites, before we played the Wales over 50’s C.C. at Cwmbran, Wales. Our next lunch stop was the lovely Roman town Bath, on our way to Oxford. We had five games at Oxford, which were part of a Cricket Festival put on by our sister club, South Oxfordshire Amateurs. All the games were played on the university grounds along the Thames, such a picturesque part of England. Before we left Oxford, we enjoyed a River cruise on the Thames past the Cross Keys Hotel and the rowing club pavilions along the famous river. Now it was time for London where we enjoyed 9 days of holiday. We were able to see a couple of days of the exciting Ashes Test at Lords between the rain. Our traditional last game of the tour was at Meopham CC in Kent, where we are always royally welcomed and hosted at the Village Green ground. A highlight of the tour was to watch Melbourne Cricket Club defeat the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lords on day 6 for the first time since these matches started back in 1993.

Season Fixture

Season included 16 games in Melbourne, NSW and country over the season, winning six, losing six, with one wash out and three cancelled. Our last game of our fixture, in March, was cancelled due to the Covid-19 virus. Our regional games included Puckapunyal Army Barracks VIC, The Village Green at Strath Creek VIC, The Bradman Oval at Bowral NSW, and Avery’s Paddock, Port Fairy, VIC.

Annual Dinner 26th September 2019

A good crowd gathered for our Traditional Grand final week Dinner, to hear the Australian “T20 and One Day” Captain, give us some insight into the highs and lows of the short form game and the pressure it has on players in a hectic schedule.

Boxing Day Test Functions

Once again, the days were well supported even though we were bumped from our traditional Boxing Day function, to Day 2.

Long Room Lunches 13 March 2020

We were only able to have one last season due to, Tour, and Covid-19, however It was well supported and used as an event for a Reunion of the Ashes Touring party, with great success. Our Guest Speaker, Seb Gotch, had just come off two centuries (the first being his maiden century) with the Victorian side, so he was full of confidence about the success of the VICS for the rest of the Season.

Thanks

I wish to thank (a) your XXIX Club Committee members, for their drive, to continually improve the experience for you, the Members, (b) plus our Players, Umpires, Scorers, and Team Managers who contributed to a successful season, (c) the MCC Parent Club Committee for their support of the XXIX Club. I wish to also thank the curators of our grounds, particularly Glenn Arnup (Albert Ground) and Scott West (Beaumaris S C); it is a privilege to be able to play on these quality grounds. A special thanks to Steven McCooke and Liam Dimattina in the MCC Office, for their assistance in making the XXIX Club work, and finally thanks to John Anderson for being our resident MC at our functions; a true professional.

Finance Report for Season 2019/20

Many of the functions for the second half of the year were unfortunately cancelled due to the Covid- 19 restrictions. Therefore, through no fault of our own the social calendar was a little light on over the past 12 months.

2019/20 year Annual Dinner – Thursday 26 th September

Our traditional Grand Final week Annual dinner continued again this year where we had the pleasure of 225 members and guests in the MCC Dining Room to be entertained by our guest speaker Aaron Finch. We only broke even as a result here, however this was up from last year where we made a small loss.

Long Room Lunches

We only had the one Long Room Lunch this year on Friday 13 March 2020, just before “lock down”. Seb Gotch from MCC & interviewed well with John Anderson, who also invited, Neil “Spider” Williams, Sandy Roberts, & Paul Barker to the podium for a bit of Q&A. We had 96 Attendees, including 22 x UK Tour 2019 attendees which made for an afternoon of some great catch ups. We made a small profit here showing revenue of $9,210 against $8,593 of expenses. Again, we will look to ramp up these popular lunches next year, as they are a great way to bring guests along to introduce them to our club and into the inner circles of Victorian/Australian Cricket, not to mention escaping a Friday afternoon in the office.

Day 2 & 3 Test Match at MCG Luncheons

Due to the New Zealanders across the ditch creating a large amount of interest, we only had access to Days 1 & 2 in the Keith Miller. Seated on tales of 10 behind glass with full view of the ground, all that attended settled in for the day to take advantage of the facilities including a 3-course meal and open bar. In summary: 1. Test Match Day 2. We had 97 Attendees in the Keith Miller Room with $14,055 revenue against $12,542 expenses. 2. Test Match Day 3. 125 Attendees (Full House) $18,575 Revenue against $16,162.00 expenses

AFL Football Functions

In the past these AFL functions in the Hans Ebeling Room at the MCG have been popular with our XXIX Club members as they are good social interaction outside of the cricket season. Obviously due to Covid-19 restrictions we were not able to organise any matches for the 2020 season. We will however ensure we revisit this next year.

Tours

No other tours after the Ashes Tour in August 2019 were possible throughout the year.

Introduction to the MCC XXIX Club

The club owes its very existence to a very small band of cricket enthusiasts who took the very first steps towards its formation just prior to the 1956/57 season. The prime movers were Jack Daniel, Jack Green, Max Haysom, Ian McDonald and Keith Rigg, and those of us who now enjoy membership are in the debt of those five men. To refresh the memories, in this year’s annual report there is a fascinating account by Ian McDonald of the club’s formation. All members of the Melbourne Cricket Club and Playing members on the waiting list are eligible for XXIX Club membership subject to acceptance by the committee of a nomination form supported by a proposer and a seconder, each of whom is to be a financial member of the XXIX Club of at least 12 month’s standing. Applications for membership and subscription details can be found on the MCC website: https://www.mcc.org.au/mcc-cricket/mcc-cricket/xxix-club The function of the club is to foster the enjoyment of cricket largely by arranging matches and other social events. New silk club ties ($60.00) are available from the MCC offices. Please contact the MCC Club Sport Administration Officer on 9657 8985. Members are urged to encourage others to join. We are particularly keen to swell the ranks of those whose interest in cricket is not confined to spectatorship. Keen players and helpers are most welcome.

Page | 9 A Note on the Formation of the MCC XXIX Club It does no harm to delve into history, if only for the nostalgic memories of the past. It has been suggested that in 1956 “Dasher” Daniel, Keith Rigg, Max Haysom, “Groper” Green and I happened to get together and form the XXIX Club. It wasn’t quite like that. Rather than being a case of “spontaneous generation”, the Club rather “rose like a Phoenix from the ashes”. Those of you who still have the original report 1956/57 may care to read (for few will remember) of the teams taken away to the country before and immediately after the Second World War by Su Aitken, Hec Donahoo, and Stan Rogerson. With the tearing up of the MCG for the 1956 Olympic Games, social cricket was, for a time, abandoned. Quite fortuitously, I was in Oxford for two years about that time. I had been introduced to the pleasures of English Cricket, and in particular was greatly impressed and delighted by the art form known as the annual dinner; a play in which the actors dressed in black and white, were regaled by after dinner speakers of extraordinary wit and enthusiasm. Upon my return home, being unwilling to forgo these pleasures, but unable to do anything effectively on my own, I was fortunate to find enthusiastic support from several players of my vintage and two general committeemen in Keith Tolhurst and Keith Rigg, who were willing and able to avoid the hidden rocks of the anti-Sunday cricket establishment and still deliver a child legitimised by the MCC. This child soon to become the XXIX Club (the name “the MCC Bulls” having been pronounced too way-out for the MCC Committee), fell easily into the gap left by the earlier social teams, but had the added virtue of being a formal sub-section of the MCC with its own Committee, cap, tie and annual dinner, and, in due course, its Permanent Back Stop. I think that I, more than anyone, was delighted by the success (due mostly to the indefatigable Tom Leather) of the first season’s games. The climax of it all was the first annual dinner at Fountainbleu in 1957 for in its annual dinner I believe is sublimated all the social pleasure of a cricket club. Graced by Lindsay Hassett, the dinner, almost course for course and speaker for speaker, was quite intentionally moulded on the 21 st annual dinner of the South Oxfordshire Amateurs CC that had so enthused me in 1954. It is for this reason that I have always believed S.O.A. to be the unwitting father of the XXIX Club (there was so much free champers that night that the father would have been none the wiser), and accordingly, made strenuous efforts to be at its 50 th annual dinner when I was able to make a presentation representing both congratulations and thanks from the XXIX Club. But no child can be fathered without a mother, and it was the MCC through the enthusiasm of a number of senior players and committeemen of 1956, who saw the foetus through its gestation and , later to name it XXIX in recognition of the fact the cricketers never grow old. Several of the original and early members have become general committeemen in the course of time. It is my hope that such close association of the XXIX Club with the higher echelon of the mother club will continue to the mutual benefit of both.

The late Ian “Doc” McDonald

We left Dublin early Monday morning by bus, after our wonderful dinner the night below at Johnny Fox’s Pub, where we were introduced to Irish music and fare.

The Harry Savill Oval and Pavilion has been built in 2008, on Peter Savill’s Horse Stud property approximately 1 hour south of Dublin at Wicklow. The Pavilion, named after Peter’s father, is a replica of Peter’s old school cricket pavilion, very stylish.

Oak Hill won the toss and decided to bat on a good track.

The match was a 40 over game, and at drinks, after 20 overs we were in a reasonable position having Oak Hill 6/137. However, as they say, partnerships win matches and in this case it was the 112 run 7th partnership between Mike Cowdrey (97n.o.) and R. J. Forrest (50) which assisted in pushing their score to 8/284 c.c. Mike Cowdrey (Grandson of Lord Cowdrey), played a season with the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2018. Our best wicket takers were Ash Farr 2/20 and Cam Scholten 2/57.

In our innings, most batsmen got a start however it was not until Waldo Wilson (57 n.o.) and James McIntyre (35 n.o.) came together for a 95 run partnership that we could say that we were on top of their bowling.

A magnificent Lunch provided by Peter’s wife and his family, and post-match refreshments helped us “lick our wounds”.

After a day of sightseeing in Dublin we were ready for our next game against Leinster Cricket Club.

This club is located approximately a 10-minute walk south of our Hotel in Dublin. As you walk down a residential street, you turn left up a lane and walk 50 metres to a ground that opens up behind the Georgian terraced houses. The perimeter is enclosed by houses, to make it a picturesque ground. The two-story club house also provides facilities for adjacent the tennis club.

Leinster Captain, Chris Janik (played four years with Melbourne Cricket Club before moving to Dublin), won the toss and selected to bat on the good wicket, in an overcast day. Their openers took the shine off the ball batting soundly to reach 35 off 13 overs, however our bowlers struck, taking five for 21 runs in the space of nine overs. Chris Janik (63) then decided to work with a batting partner Gavin Gilmore (25 n.o.) to lift the score to 153 at the end of the 35th over. The best of our bowlers were Glenn Hannah 2/23 and John Kent 2/35.

The best of our batsmen, were Mark Butler 63, Matt Curtain 40 n.o. Ben Vague 18 n.o. as we chased down the target with four overs to spare. It was great to catch up with Chris Janik again, and we thank him and the Leinster club for hosting us on the day.

Our bus ventured into the Welsh hills just north of Cardiff to the Croesyceiliog Cricket Club, in the town of Cwmbran, for our game against the Wales Over 50’s team.

The ground was small with a slope slightly greater than Lords. James McIntyre our captain won the toss and we batted first in a 40 over game.

Best with the bat for XXIX Club were James McIntyre 58, Matt Scholten 57, & Cam Scholten 41.

Best with the bat for Wales was Chris Richards 79 n.o. XXIX Best Bowlers were Wal Wilson 3/39 off 8 overs, Cam Scholten 1/25 off 8, and James McIntyre 1/34 off 7.

The Welsh are wonderful hosts, and the ladies put on a special afternoon tea with Australian and Welsh flags decorating the savouries.

Our tour continues in Oxford with our signature game against South Oxfordshire Amateurs (SOA) – President’s XI, played at University College.

We played a declaration game, with Matt Scholten winning the toss and deciding to bat as rain was threatening. After 44 overs we had a good score on a large oval 6/215, with the star being David Chippindall scoring his maiden century 101 n.o. and well supported by Matt Scholten 36, and Sam Harper 32.

SOA were in trouble immediately with Glenn Hannah taking a wicket with the first ball of the innings. The wickets continued to come with regularity until SOA were dismissed for 139 in the 33rd over. Their man of the match was Swaphil Kulkharmi with 58. Our bowling attack was dominated by Glenn Hannah taking 3/23 off 6 overs, Man of Match, David Chippindall 3/20 of 6, Tristan Larter 2/34 off six, Sam Harper in his new role as opening bowler 1/9 off seven, and Cam Scholten 1/26 off six.

David’s faultless innings of 101 n.o. was a delight to watch, including 6 fours and 2 sixes.

As many of the SOA spectators reminisced their friendships with the late great “Doc” McDonald, we toasted the memory of “Doc” and sung our club song with much gusto.

As we walked along the Thames River to the ground for Day 2 of the Oxford Cricket Festival, we enjoyed the swans and the hive of activity of boating and rowers from the colleges.

The match was a declaration game where Devon won the toss and decided to bat, in sunny conditions, on a good wicket.

Devon had five batsmen who made 20’s 30’s & 40’s, and the XXIX Club bowling honours were shared by David Chippindall 4/78 off 20 overs, Cam Scholten 3/35 off nine, Glenn Hannah 2/28 off 11, and Sam Harper 1/20 off seven.

Once again, our top order set about the run chase with XXIX Club batting stars being Matt Scholten 72, Sam Harper 57, Tristan Larter 32 n.o. & Mark Butler 24 n.o. This allowed us to pass their score with three overs to spare.

This match was also a declaration game – The Cricket Society won the toss and batted.

The Cricket Society faced our best attack with both Glenn Hannah and Jackson Koop opening from each end.

After 32 overs the Cricket Society were struggling 6/80 however their tail did wag and they were all out for 165.

Our best bowler was Glenn Hannah, a magnificent spell of 5 wickets for 27 runs off 15 overs including 8 maidens definitely deserving the Man of the Match award.

Other bowlers were John Kent 3/14 off seven, Cam Scholten 2/25 off nine. Unlucky Jackson Koop had a couple of wickets off no balls and ended up with 0/41 off 11.

We were quietly enjoying our innings when at 1/36 their opening bowlers took four wickets in three overs including a hat trick to Ash Saleen 3/44, to have us 5/36 at tea. (Matt Curtain out for 24), however Sam Harper 71 n.o. and Tristan Larter 59 n.o. put on a 133 run partnership to win the game off 27 of our allotted 40 overs.

Middleton Stoney’s captain, Simon Lee won the toss and batted on a day that was threatening rain.

One hour into the game, Mark Butler dived to save a four in the covers and dislocated his shoulder, so after an ambulance ride to hospital, where it was popped back in we returned to the ground to find that the match had finished. Mark’s injury sadly, prevented him from playing for the rest of the tour.

The game report from the score book; we had them 6/85 off 32 overs and then the 7th wicket partnership put on 50 runs, as the rain came.

Tea was taken as it rained for 30 minutes with no covers over the wicket.

Chasing the runs did not come easy, we were 8/52 in no time at all, and all out for 104.

Best of our bowlers were Tristan Larter 3/18 off seven overs, Ben Vague 2/29 off four, David Chippindall 2/36 off seven , John Kent 1/18 off seven. Jackson Koop 0/9 off six.

We reversed the batting order which didn’t go well for us. Our batting best were Sam Harper 34, Matt Scholten 16 n.o. John Kent 13, Matt Curtain 12.

In would probably have a BBQ to wrap up the day, however what would the Poms have as their national dish of Fish & Chips from a mobile chipper van. The food and the beer were enjoyed by all, after a great day of camaraderie.

This was an excellent day weather wise that had a searching for the sunscreen. The local side was captained by a NZ “pro” who wanted to instil some professionalism in his squad. He imposed a dress code for pre-match photos and the team certainly responded accordingly. The match was played to competition 50/50 playing conditions with fielding restrictions and free hits on no balls. Sam Harper won the toss and batted on a good wicket with a short boundary on one side.

Andre and Sam opened the batting hammering the bowling with a 106-run partnership before Andre was out for 52 (six fours and two sixes). Sam went to make 99 (13 fours one six) before being caught at backward square leg.

Tristan then came in and attacked the bowling with a fine 62 (9 fours 2 sixes). He was well supported by David Chippindall 35 n.o.

David Chippindall was the best of the bowlers 4/60 off nine, Adam McNamara 2/13 off three, Jackson Koop 1/15 off six, Matt Curtain 1/13 off three and Sam Harper 1/28 off six.

A traditional was established in 2001, that this game would be played on the Sunday of the Lords Test on each Tour, for the Kelvin Garth Payne Memorial Trophy. For those who have had the privilege of seeing the Meopham Village Green, know that the boundary is marked by roads on two sides and the houses front gardens behind the sight screen. The square leg boundary on one side is about 25 meters, so runs can come thick and fast.

John Kent, our Captain, won the toss and decided to bat. As this was a good warm up match for the Melb CC v Marlyebone CC tomorrow, Andre De Lange opened the batting and held his end together as a succession of batsmen departed from the other end until our number five, Jackson Koop arrived at the crease. This partnership put on 120 runs with Andre retiring on 113 n.o. 14 fours and four sixes, and Jackson scoring 85 n.o. 11 fours and four sixes. Our innings came to a close after 35 overs at 4/233 c.c.

A magnificent Tea was served by the Meopham Ladies, who attempted to fill our bowler’s stomachs with cream sponges and scones to slow them down.

However, our opening bowlers, Jackson Koop and Sam Harper controlled the run rate by regularly taking wickets to have Meopham at 5/84, before Harvey and Max Luckett came together and added 80 runs for the 6th Wicket. With seven overs remaining and 60 runs to get, both our fielding and bowlers wrapped up the victory with a couple of fine run outs in the last four wickets, a win by 38 runs.

Pints and more food followed before we were back on the bus back to London, looking forward to our Day at Lords. My thanks go to our many supporters and to our match officials; Tim Norton umpiring both ends and Barrie Hopkins on the score book.

A compliment of 15 XXIXers headed up the Hume Freeway to Puckapunyal for the first game of the local season. Upon arrival and the associated security checks we dropped our kits into “Shell Green” to begin preparations for our season opener.

On winning the toss, the locals elected to bowl. Laurie Heath and Neil Adams got things started for the visitors and quickly progressed through to double figures before the first wicket fell on 24 at the beginning of the 6th over. Jon Clampett joined the patient Heath as the pair added a further 68 runs before ‘Jed’ was caught on 39. Matt Curtain came to the crease and played a support role initially as ‘Lozza” put the foot down before retiring on 63 with the score on 117. James Davis’s four to get off the mark was as fine a shot you’re likely to see for the entire season let alone the first game. Matt Curtain now stepped out of Laurie’s shadow with some exquisite stroke play whilst being ably assisted by Ron Shugg. “Don’t bowl short to Shuggy" was Ron’s message to the Army’s bowlers, after playing a couple of masterful pull shots. Ron finished on 15 along with James McIntyre unbeaten on zero, who joined Ron after Matt Curtain was dismissed within one stroke of his 50, trying to add quick runs in the final overs. At the compulsory closure after 35 overs the XXIX Club reached a defendable total of 5/173.

Phil Halbish got us off to the perfect start, claiming the wicket of Army opener Riley Deeble with his first delivery, bowled. Wickets fell regularly, first to James McIntyre (1/20), then Halbish (2/4) for his second. Tim Corney’s (2/9) picked up the next two before Peter Leggett (1/20) took matters into his own hands with a bowled after having two reasonably straight forward chances put down at the wicket. James Davis removed the stubborn opener Matt McLaughlin prior to the Army steadying somewhat with a 34 run partnership between Richard Naisbitt (26) and Lachlan Deeble (16) for the 8th wicket. Matt Curtain (1/1) claimed the dangerous Naisbitt while Jon Clampett (2/2) cleaned up the tail with the last two wickets. The Army finished 85 runs short, all out on 89 two balls in to the 29th over.

The game was played in great spirits, as were the after-match refreshments, before a presentation which included a few very heartfelt and well-chosen words by our chairman. As always, these games Page | 24 are made easier for us by our umpires, Geoff Fidler and Darren Deeble, and scorers, Barrie Hopkins and Jacinta Mott, thank you to you all. A further thank you must go to Colin Walker for being the team chauffeur. Not only driving the bus for the day, but for not driving for an hour while we stopped at Beveridge for, you guessed it, a beverage (or two!). Thanks Colin.

Thank you also to Puckapunyal Cricket Club for hosting us at their wonderful home.

Magnificent conditions at the Albert Ground greeted all the participants of this fixture with the sun shining and a bare straw-coloured strip out in the middle. The day turned out to be batsman’s dream with seven half centuries contributing to over 500 runs being scored of a little shy of 80 overs. The MCC XXIX batted first and with the early loss of Laurie Heath, Bryn Gaunt joined Paul Whybird for an 86 run stand before Paul departed for a well combined 50. Neil Adams came to the crease and continued the free flow of runs alongside Gaunt who became the second retiree at 50, although Bryn’s ticking past 50, was followed by a flurry of 6’s meaning that at the end of that over he retired on 68, a point well debated over a few of the participants generously provided beverages at the after match BBQ. With Gaunt back resting in the sheds, Matt Curtain continued the trend of fast scoring and was the fourth batsman to reach 50 after putting on a 100 run partnership with Adams, who also made his 50 retired. So, after the four half centurions had completed their handy work and a late flurry from the lower order, the MCC XXIX Club posted a competitive 2/252 off 38 overs. A high commendation must be given to the Vignerons bowling attack who toiled away in perfect batting conditions to restrict the scoring at various times during the XXIX Club innings.

While it was a strong total and over six runs an over was required, the superb batting conditions, short boundaries and quickening outfield meant that it was far from a fait accompli that the XXIX Club would have it easy in the second innings. And so, the story went with the evergreen George Kidman and talented Dan Redman striding to the crease to open the Vignerons innings. Redman fell early, but Kidman continued on his merry way proving strong square of the wicket against the new ball and across the line to the slower bowlers, completion his 4th unbeaten 50 in the same future from the previous four innings. Upon Kidman's departure, the left-handed Darren Campbell continued to compile runs at the required rate and was ably supported by contributions from James Hall (22) and Malcom Stopp (22). The required run rate had hovered between six and seven an over for the innings until the hard hitting allrounder Curt Evans decided to take the game on blasting 55

Page | 26 retired with nine fours and a six to take the Vignerons within 30 runs of victory with seven overs to go.

The last few overs ebbed and flowed with wickets falling. A timely six from Luke Lambert swung the tide back in the Vignerons favour after the fall of a couple of late order wickets and then with Darren Campbell back at the crease and the ice cool demeanour of Jeremy Oliver at the other end, it was the Vignerons who won the day with five balls to spare.

It was another great day at the Albert Ground, and a very memorable and enjoyable fixture between two sides who are enjoying a well spirited and competitive rivalry which is reciprocated year on year with alternating trips by the Vignerons to the Albert and the XXIX Club to , and the iconic country grounds of the Barossa and Coonawarra.

Many thanks to everyone whose efforts made the day possible, the Umpires John Robinson and John MacKinnon, the tireless XXIX Club scorer Barrie Hopkins, John Kent, Geoff Fidler and Col Walker from the XXIX Club who looked after the off the field responsibilities with such aplomb & Jeremy Oliver for his tireless work in coordinating the Vignerons XI with representatives from the various wine growing regions of Southern Australia.

The XXIX’s hosted the ACS at Strath Creek in perfect cricket conditions. This was an over 50’s fixture for the Club. Losing the toss, we were invited to bat on a wicket that was slightly damp underneath after a lot of rain the previous day. Openers Matt Curtain and first gamer Dave Martin nevertheless withstood the opening bowlers to advance to 38 before Martin was dismissed on 14. Curtain batted solidly to eventually retire on 41. Other significant contributions came from Neil Adams 37, Ron Shugg 38 and John Kent 40 not out. We declared at the very competitive score of five for 201.

A Pizza Lunch was provided by our hosts, the Rogers family, in the beautiful pavilion and John gave us some background into the facility with focus on his son Chris’s memorabilia which was on display in the pavilion.

By the time the ACS batted the wicket had dried right out so we needed to field and bowl tightly. Unfortunately, we leaked a lot of runs early and the ACS batted very positively looking for singles at will (and there were plenty of them). Our best bowlers were Neil Adams 0/19 from 8 overs, John Kent 0/22 from 5 overs and Geoff Fidler (out of retirement) who took 1/16 off five overs. Other serviceable bowling performances came from Peter Leggett and Paul Jackson. The ACS passed our score with an over to spare expending the same number of wickets as us.

Thanks to the umpires John MacKinnon and Mike Slattery and our scorer Garry Goodman and Team Manager Colin Walker.

Everyone enjoyed the country setting and hoped to return there for another game.

A squad of 14, including Club Chairman Col Walker and Geoff Fidler, travelled up to the Capital, with the bulk of us meeting for dinner the previous night (Saturday night) before the match to sneak in a little male bonding session at a local Italian restaurant (about the only place still serving after 8pm).

We awoke quite fresh for a tour match arriving at the picturesque Bradman Oval, where we had access to the Bradman museum prior to the match.

Winning the toss on a glorious summer’s day in Bowral, albeit a little smokey in the heart of the awful bushfires, we chose to bat first. It was a little concerning initially after losing quick wickets in the first 10 overs to be three for 30, however we managed to get out of jail with some terrific batting. Chris Brown on debut, our Sydney/Paris export was terrific leading the fight back with a well put together 30 including a sweetly hit six back over the bowlers’ head. Matt Curtain, egged on by son Will in the stands, was magnificent showing all his class and 360-degree modern batting to make 104 n.o. He was partnered late by Matt Stein crashing a quick fire 44 not out, for us to finish 5/207 off the allotted 40 overs, which we thought put us in a commanding position.

We started well with runs again difficult against the new ball, getting the run rate required up to six an over at one point. However, with a quickening outfield in the afternoon, and a couple of drop catches (Waldo!) we let the game slip as a partnership of over 100 runs was unable to be broken. Eventually, we were passed only two down with still a couple of overs remaining. Curtis Murray, Tom Robertson and their captain Simon James all batted beautifully for the Cricket Club of NSW to steer them past our total.

For the MCC XXIX’s, Michael Rattenbury was a star with the new ball, especially his ‘effort ball’ that skidded on to prove difficult to handle early. He was backed up by another debutant Liam Durkin (The Journo from The Gippsland Times) opening from the other end, bowling well without luck.

Page | 30

Phil Halbish after 20+ overs the day before and a solo seven-hour drive overnight was stoic in his efforts as was Matt Stein with his handy outswingers. In the end we lacked a quality spinner, as we needed desperately to take the pace off the ball. It was an unusual situation for the XXIX club to have all the bowlers wanting to bend their back and bowl with pace on, which played into their hands on a very flat afternoon wicket.

Nevertheless, a terrific fixture and we look forward to hosting them down at the Albert next year to wipe the smile of big Greg Brooks’ face. Thanks to Col for scoring and driving up the club kit and Geoff Fidler for his umpiring duties.

We had a great weekend regardless of the result, even with a foursome managing to squeeze in a round of golf at Royal Canberra on the Monday.

One of the great challenges for XXIX Club sides is when we endeavour to match up against younger and fitter opposition outfits that still play regular Saturday cricket, and the annual fixture against the MCC Club XI representative side certainly fits into that category. For this particular fixture he XXIX Club were fortunate to be represented by 10 former premier cricketers from eight different Premier clubs, with four players (Messrs McNamara, Hillas, Cook and M. Sealey) making their debut in the blue, red and white hooped cap.

After winning the toss and batting the XXIX Club got off to a great start, with the evergreen pairing of Cam Judd and Bryn Gaunt revelling in the conditions with a 110 run partnership for the first wicket. Despite some steady bowling and athletic fielding from the Club XI side, the powerful middle order combination of Shaun Richardson, Adam McNamara and Clint Hillas all then chipped in with some lusty blows as the XXIX Club reached a very respectable total of 5/213 from its allotted 35 overs.

Upon taking the field the primary objective of the XXIX Club outfit was to stem the initial run explosion that the Club XI top order can often inflict. This was a plan that opening bowlers Paul Sealy and Clint Hillas executed perfectly with the run rate still sitting at less than 3 runs per over after the first 10 overs. Hillas was particularly frugal ending with 4 overs 1/8. At first change we saw ex Carlton leg spinner Callum Cook returning to the Albert for the first time in 20 years, and he struck immediately claiming an LBW with his wrong 'un in his first over, and continued to look particularly dangerous right throughout his 7 over spell. Mark Sealey and 'Golden Arm' Judd also bowled well as the wickets were shared among the 8 different XXIX Club bowlers, with the Club XI bowled out for 162 from 33 overs. Raj Aaiyappan and the MCC's own John Fitzgibbon were the pick of the opposition batsmen with 68 and 40 respectively.

Page | 32

Once again, a wonderful day at the Albert that was notable for 4 newcomers to the XXIX Club all performing well on debut, in a very competitive fixture. Mike Slattery and the evergreen John MacKinnon were again faultless in their officiation, and thanks also to Barrie Hopkins, Col Walker, Spider Williams, Geoff Fiddler and John Kent for their assistance off the field in making the day a terrific success.

Nominated skipper Carl Nunan delegated leadership to Matt Curtain who notched up a Club victory against long-time combatants, The Crusaders. Matt was clever enough to draft in his sons Will and Sam plus a few younger players knowing that the Crusader often throw up some talent.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, the XXIX Club lost an early wicket with the dismissal of recruit Ritchie Savage. Then was quickly followed by retired-hurt Dave Martin and the dismissal of Glenn Thomson. Curiously – the three of them each made six (devil’s number?). it was not an ideal start, but club debutants Mason Binns (59) including three massive 6’s and Sam Curtain (43) then plundered the Crusaders attack to turn the game in favour of the XXIXers.

A number of quick wickets then fell, bringing number ten Harry Douglas and club debutant, number eleven Harry Sharlassian to the crease together. Harry immediately pounded the Crusaders attack to all points of the ground belting a powerful 43. Harry, valuing an opportunity to spend some time at the crease made a stylish knock of 21 not out. His club skipper usually declares on him. The outstanding final wicket partnership then moved the XXIX Club innings to 211 with last wicket falling in the final over.

The Crusaders innings got off to a steady start, and were confident of chasing down the required tally for victory, but with Sam Curtain (1/32 from 7 overs) and Harry Sharlassian (2/27 off 7) adding to his wonderful innings with the bat, runs were hard come by. However, with seasoned Crusaders veteran Phil O'Meara compiling a late innings 43, the Crusaders were moving close to victory late in their innings until the XXIXers skipper Matt Curtain rolled out its prime ace, and seasoned pro, Carl Nunan - swinging the ball either way, and seaming it off the deck, the Crusaders could not get Carl away, and his late innings 1/9 off 2 led the XXIXers to victory, when the Crusaders innings closed at 4/198.

Page | 34

The continued work of XXIX Club leaders Colin Walker, scoring for the day, Tim Norton umpiring and Carl Nunan in putting the team together, added to an outstanding day being enjoyed by all involved.

Given that Saturday cricket at Galt Reserve had been washed out, the curator had to work extra hard to get the deck up. The Kingston Saints were then kind enough to open their bar for us, and the post-match refreshments were even more enjoyable because the Crusaders picked up the tab.

The day was magnificent. The Albert a picture. The boys from Euroa had come to town in the annual fixture which recently had seen a few washouts. They won the toss and put us in. Unfortunately, our openers were out without troubling the scorer. Milly’s men had started well.

It was a struggle and difficult to score. We got a little composure back with Andrew Sheehan before he was run out for 22. Matt Curtain (19) and Glenn Thomson (26) had to work hard as the pressure was kept on. In came Ryan Fort and he really went for it. He managed to hit to all parts of the ground. 77no was a great effort as we got our run rate up and put ourselves back on track.

An early wicket had Euroa starting as we had. However, a really good innings from Tim Jackson and the rest of the middle order had us working hard for every wicket. Milly’s mob didn’t give us anything easy and they managed to get to our score. Ryan Fort bowled well, along with Paul Jackson. The game was played hard but in great spirits. Great roast after in the clubrooms and a great job by umpires Tim Norton and John Mackinnon, plus Barrie Hopkins on the books. At a debrief held at the Espy everyone agreed it was a really great day and whilst Euroa took the points, cricket was the winner again!

Wednesday, 12th February turned on splendid conditions for the MCC Chairman’s XI to host the XXIX Club for their annual encounter at the MCG. This season saw the beginning of a new era where female players participated for the first time ever during this fixture. It was certainly a glance to the future involving some of the MCC’s bright female stars in Anna O’Donnell (MCC Chairman’s XI) and Clementine Ryan-Fuller (XXIXers), living out childhood dreams of playing on the MCG.

The XXIXers won the toss and sent the President’s in. After a nifty start from the home team with the runs flowing (led by Will Thompson’s 77) a bowling change was required to stem the flow. With Charles Lill (41) and Andrew Kent at the crease (MCC’s most capped 1st XI player and highest runs scorer) it was only fitting that Clem Ryan-Fuller be given the opportunity in her debut outing at the ‘G to slow the scoring rate. That she did, bowling a superb unchanged spell of 4 overs for just 16 runs. Ash Middlin then chimed in with 2/7 off two overs with Mark Anderson and Phil Halbish the only other wicket takers with one apiece. The Chairman’s XI then accelerated their scoring in to the close of their innings with Peter Roach making a swift 45no in familiar surroundings.

The XXIXers started confidently with Mark Butler and Andre De Lange, but no one was able to captitalise on their start with a smattering of 20’s through the middle order. Anna O’Donnell was the main antagonist for the Chairman’s XI with a fine spell of medium pace bowling taking 3/23 from seven overs. Matt Page, noting that he is also the curator of the wicket, took the wind out of our sails by taking 2/6. Although the opposition captain was stretching the spirit of cricket friendship setting some very conservative fields in the 35 over per side encounter, it didn’t deter Sean Griffin with a late flurry which was ultimately in vain as he ended 50no and the XXIXers falling 41 runs short.

Many thanks to the umpires Mike Slattery and Geoff Fiddler, Team Managers Steven McCooke and Colin Walker and scorer Barrie Hopkins, all who did a terrific job in facilitating the match. Thanks also to the MCG staff for providing the outstanding conditions for play.

The generous hospitality that was offered by Michael Happell was enjoyed by all in attendance as the evening was capped off beautifully with a dinner, refreshments and regaling of the days play in the committee room at the XXIX’ers home base that is the Tavern at the ground, at the ground.

The Port Fairy Pirates Cricket Club (PFCC) celebrated its 170th Anniversary in November 2019.

The Port Fairy Cricket Club is the third oldest cricket club in Victoria, behind the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Brighton Cricket Club. In 1855 the Melbourne Cricket Club travelled by boat to Port Fairy to play against the local side. This game was delayed several days while many of the MCC players recovered from sea-sickness. Melbourne won that game by 5 runs. We have played two further games in 1999 and 2005, both as a part of their Club’s anniversary celebrations.

The Melbourne Cricket Club were pleased to accept the offer to participate in this year’s celebration.

A group of 20 Players and supporters travelled to Port Fairy for a weekend of Golf, Cricket and Socialising, which included the PFCC Celebration Dinner on the Saturday evening.

The Match

On Sunday, a 40 over game was held at Avery’s Paddock Oval. Our Captain, Patty Smith won the toss and decided to bat. The PFCC bowling attack was quite strong as expected, however our batsmen were able to create a number of good partnerships. Firstly, Liam Buchanan and Alistair McCooke put on an opening partnership of 51, followed by a third wicket partnership between Liam and Paul Whybird of 49 runs, and then a quick fire fifth wicket partnership of 40 runs with Matt Stein joining Liam.

I congratulate Liam Buchanan (our man of the match) for amassing 99 runs (6 – Fours and 2 – Sixes) before being bowled trying to bring up his century.

Page | 40

With 174 runs, on the board we set about containing the PFCC batsmen. Their middle order of Gleeson – 55, Williams – 21, and Field - 31, set up the game for an exciting finish. 44 runs to get, off 10 overs with 5 wickets in hand. John Fitzgibbon 3/37 off 8 overs and Liam Buchanan 2/33 off 8 overs brought us to the last over to be bowled by Captain Pat. The equation, 7 runs to win with 2 wickets in hand for a win off 6 legal balls. However, Captain Pat lead us to victory with only 4 runs (3 off the bat and 1 bye) off that last over. Port Fairy CC 8/172 c.c.

Summary

It was an excellent weekend, and I thank the Port Fairy club for their hospitality, and we hope that our club can reciprocate in the near future.

This match was a first for the XXIX club on two counts. Firstly, our inaugural T22 Match against the Patron Saints, who are a group of ex-players from Premier Cricket Club St. Kilda. Secondly it was our first Day/Night match under lights at Beaumaris Secondary College oval.

As captain, I was keen not to let the Patron Saints who was being captained by our Treasurer Mark Butler, have an easy game, so the gauntlet was thrown down, “no holds barred”.

I don’t know who won the toss, however The Patron Saints were sent into bat on a magnificently prepared pitch (thanks to Scott West and his team). Walking out to open was recently retired Australian First-Class Cricketer Maxy Klinger, with their Captain Mark.

The bowling attack of XXIX Club was varied with both spin and pace, allowing us to contain the runs, however it was our fielding that came to the fore with three runs outs, which kept the Patron Saints to 7/123 c.c. after their allotted 22 overs. Best of the Patron Saints Batting were, Peter Eyers 30 n.o., Adam McNamara 22, and Damian Scales 22.

Then it was our turn to bat in the twilight, which our openers Laurie Heath 40 ret., and Matt Curtain 25 ret. said it was difficult to adjust to, however, it did not stop them from creating a 67 run partnership in the first 9 overs. From then on, we were in control with both Patty Smith and myself at the crease, when we passed them in the 17th over, with our score at 4/125.

We were invited to use the Social Rooms of Beaumaris Cricket Club in Oak St., just down the road, where we enjoyed a BBQ and a “few bevvies” as a number of friendships were renewed.

There were many wins for the XXIX Club, following this format, including by starting a T20 at 5.00 pm on a Wednesday evening allowed a number of fresh faces to play on both sides. The Ground with the lights, make it a great venue to Day/Night games, and Beaumaris C.C. were very

The XXIX Club were once again delighted to welcome Australian Defence Forces from HMAS Cerberus to the Albert Ground for what is our longest standing fixture.

Under threatening and bleak skies, the toss was more of a ‘discussion’ that concluded the XXIX Club would bat first. We made a very solid if, somewhat slow start. Richie Savage contributed 23 before retiring whilst his opening partner, the evergreen James McIntyre made 48. Solid contributions in the middle lower order from Stuart Stockdale (16 ret.), Jon Clampett (17 no.) and a late over cameo from Andrew (Waldo) Wilson (46 no.) saw us finish our innings at 3/183. A competitive total but certainly not insurmountable given the perfect track delivered up by the expert Albert groundsmen.

Two early wickets put us right in the game, but Cerberus manned the guns with some big hitting from their middle order which put them in a very strong position. Despite some late wickets, they passed our total to finish at 6/189. John Kent with 2/33 was our leading wicket taker. Peter Leggett bowled well at the end.

Another wonderful day’s cricket against our oldest rivals ended with a BBQ and refreshments in the pavilion.

I take this opportunity to thank our umpires Mike ‘Slatts’ Slattery and John MacKinnon who both give freely of their time throughout the season to officiate at matches. As always Barrie Hopkins looked after the scorebook. ‘Baz’ does a wonderful job for the XXIX’s.

Finally, to our President Col Walker. Not only does Col preside over the Club, he acts as manager at most games and, of course, does an extraordinary job organising XXIX Club tours.

Originally fixtured for February 19 but washed out, we were indeed fortunate to be able to reschedule on what turned out to be an ideal day for cricket, in the perfect surroundings of the Albert Ground. Epicure team management agreed to uphold this annual match’s tradition of our guests fielding first. In the absence of an abundance of willing volunteers, the skipper joined Matt Scholten in the opening role and found that our opponents, having been slightly humbled in the past couple of encounters, had managed to recruit a far more aggressive and competitive opening attack. As a result, the skipper didn’t take a lot of shine off the new ball and we found ourselves three for not many not long after. Andrew Kent inks this match into his annual diary and once again dominated the Epicure attack before being retired on 51. Mark Sealey (37) was the other valuable middle order contributor, allowing the XXUX Club to be dismissed for 178 off the last ball of our 36-over innings. Epicure made a solid start in response before the introduction of Ryan Fort made the initial breakthrough with the first of his two wickets. Their opener Marcel Moran (30) was showing a lot of class and the capability of providing the backbone of a successful run chase before Nick Power swooped on an off drive and threw the stumps down to bring a premature end to his innings. If that was not enough, Nick then wreaked havoc with his leggies, grabbing 3 for 14 off four overs to tip the scales well and truly in the XXUIX Club’s favour. Harley Thomas impressed with two wickets from his mediums and Epicure was eventually dismissed for 112; the 66-run margin not being a true reflection of Epicure’s much improved competitiveness. There has never been any question over the high standards Epicure maintain off the field, and they certainly didn’t disappoint on this occasion. We’ve been treated to many fine variations of their gourmet BBQ post-match offering and this sat comfortably up there with the best of them. We thank Mihindu Abeywardhana for leading the on-field Epicure team, Rachel Dolan for her
