Bonnie Turner THE AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Daisy Okas Date: January 6, 2003 212-696-8342 [email protected] AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB APPROVES TWO NEW DOG BREEDS New York, NY - The American Kennel Club has announced that as of January 1, 2003 two new breeds - the Toy Fox Terrier and the German Pinscher - have been granted regular status as AKC-recognized breeds and are eligible for competition in the Toy and the Working Groups, respectively. • The Toy Fox Terrier is a true American Breed developed by breeding small Smooth Fox Terriers with several toy breeds including the Chihuahua and Manchester Terrier. Today, the Toy Fox Terrier is a well-balanced toy dog of athletic appearance displaying grace and agility in equal measure with strength and stamina. The Toy Fox Terrier has shown that he is at home in conformation, obedience and agility trials, and is a cherished companion dog, his favorite spotlight being the center stage of his owner's life. Truly a toy and a terrier, both have influenced his personality and character. As a terrier, the Toy Fox Terrier possesses keen intelligence, courage, and animation. As a toy he is diminutive, and devoted with an endless abiding love for his master. Breed characteristics include an elegant and balanced head, a short, glossy, and predominantly white coat, and a short, high-set tail. The preferred height is 9-11”. A working dog, German Pinschers are known for their vermin hunting skills and instinctual desire to protect home and family. The German Pinscher's natural hunting abilities give them a keen sense of prey drive and determination. Highly intelligent with expressive animation, the German Pinscher commands attention as it conveys the impression that this dog is ready to go to work and learn the desired task at hand. Willing learners, they make wonderful multipurpose companions with firm but gentle and consistent discipline. German Pinschers are high-energy and enjoy adventure in any form.     Questions - A Learning Experience? (as printed in AKC Gazette, May 95 Miniature Pinscher Breed Column, courtesy of: Sherry Bernard) Anyone who owns a Miniature Pinscher will testify to the fact that you can't walk your dog around the block without having people stop you to ask questions. If you and your dog venture out to a mall or flea market it is not uncommon to literally attract a crowd. Far and away the most frequently asked question appears to be "Is this a bred down Doberman?" Proud Min Pin owners are happy to respond with a resounding "No". Unfortunately, that is often the only response given. This is not because Min Pin owners are rude or unfriendly, but usually because they don't know the history of their breed. It is not necessary to recite an entire chapter of a book to provide people with some basic information on where the Min Pin came from. It would be sufficient to let people know that the Miniature Pinscher is of German origin and is believed to be a cross between the Italian Greyhound and the Dachshund. You might add that the recognition of the Miniature Pinscher occurred a number of years earlier than the recognition of the Doberman Pinscher. Of greater interest is the fact that in Germany the Miniature Pinscher was known as the "Reh Pinscher" due to its resemblance to a small red deer, the Reh, which was found in German forests many years ago. One of the most fascinating personal observations I've made is that innumerable small children will ask me if the little red dog I'm walking is a deer! This is a fairly common occurrence with children, yet I've never had an adult ask that question.

I had a party at my house to celebrate the occasion, and we all cheered at the TV as the Toy Group came in the ring. I was squirming in my seat to see who had won Best of Breed in Min Pins. I had my official list of the top-10 Min Pins in my hand and . .. wait! The Min Pin in the group, a red bitch handled by Kim Pastella, was not listed in the top 10. Where did she come from? Ch. Sunsprite Absolutely Sable, also known as Abbey, is making a return to the show ring after a year at home. Here is her story: Abbey came as a puppy from Marcia Tucker (of Sunsprite) to Pastella. Pastella, who usually has a Boxer at the end of her lead, hails from three generations of dog handlers and is no stranger to the group ring at Westminster, having twice handled a Boxer to win the Working Group there. Pastella's grandfather, Chic Ceccarini, won the group in1986 with a Boxer. Her mother, Loretta Ceccarini Parolisi, also shows Boxers. A few days after her Westminster win, I spoke to Pastella when our paths crossed at Rich Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y., home of the Buffalo Bills. (Football has not "gone to the dogs," but the stadium has opened its doors to dog shows.) I asked her, "How does it feel to win at the Garden, and where did this bitch come from, as she was not in the current top 10? " Pastella said that Abbey had finished her championship at a young age.
