  • British Veterinary Association / Kennel Club Hip Dysplasia Scheme
British Veterinary Association / Kennel Club Hip Dysplasia Scheme Breed Specific Statistics – 1 January 2001 to 31 December 2016 Hip scores should be considered along with other criteria as part of a responsible breeding programme, and it is recommended that breeders choose breeding stock with hip scores around and ideally below the breed median score, depending on the level of HD in the breed. HD status of parents, siblings and progeny for Kennel Club registered dogs should also be considered, and these together with a three generation Health Test Pedigree may be downloaded via the Health Test Results Finder, available on the Kennel Club’s online health tool Mate Select (www.mateselect.org.uk). In addition, estimated breeding values (EBVs) are available for breeds in which a significant number of dogs have been graded, via the same link. For further advice on the interpretation and use of hip scores see www.bva.co.uk/chs The breed median score is the score of the ‘average’ dog in that breed (i.e. an equal number of dogs in that breed have better and worse scores). Questions - A Learning Experience? (as printed in AKC Gazette, May 95 Miniature Pinscher Breed Column, courtesy of: Sherry Bernard) Anyone who owns a Miniature Pinscher will testify to the fact that you can't walk your dog around the block without having people stop you to ask questions. If you and your dog venture out to a mall or flea market it is not uncommon to literally attract a crowd. Far and away the most frequently asked question appears to be "Is this a bred down Doberman?" Proud Min Pin owners are happy to respond with a resounding "No". Unfortunately, that is often the only response given. This is not because Min Pin owners are rude or unfriendly, but usually because they don't know the history of their breed. It is not necessary to recite an entire chapter of a book to provide people with some basic information on where the Min Pin came from. It would be sufficient to let people know that the Miniature Pinscher is of German origin and is believed to be a cross between the Italian Greyhound and the Dachshund. You might add that the recognition of the Miniature Pinscher occurred a number of years earlier than the recognition of the Doberman Pinscher. Of greater interest is the fact that in Germany the Miniature Pinscher was known as the "Reh Pinscher" due to its resemblance to a small red deer, the Reh, which was found in German forests many years ago. One of the most fascinating personal observations I've made is that innumerable small children will ask me if the little red dog I'm walking is a deer! This is a fairly common occurrence with children, yet I've never had an adult ask that question.

  • The Miniature Pinscher Unique Origin
THE MINIATURE PINSCHER UNIQUE ORIGIN: The Miniature Pinscher, in spite of its looks, is not a miniature version of the Doberman Pinscher; however, it is believed that both breeds originated from the German Pinscher in Germany. “Min Pins,” as they are affectionately called, probably derived more from the Italian Greyhound and the Dachshund breeds. They are thought to be an old breed and used primarily as a very efficient home and barn ratter. PERSONALITY: The Min Pin is a spirited, fearless, and curious little dog. Their antics range from laughable to amazing. Min Pins are brave and fearless and make great escape artists as they can dig under or climb over fences. They are fun-loving, entertaining, and always full of energy. They can be affectionate, loyal and loving. Min Pins make a great little watchdog, as they will bark and alert you should anyone come to your door. They do well with respectful children, but you must train both of them how to properly play with each other to avoid any unintentional injuries. If unduly spoiled, the Min Pin can become headstrong. APPEARANCE: The Miniature Pinscher usually weighs between 8 to 10 pounds and stands approximately 10 to 12 inches tall. They have a compact, well proportioned body and are small and dainty in build. Its coat is short, straight, smooth and glossy. Colors can range from red, black & rust to chocolate and tan. INTERESTING FACTS: Miniature Pinschers are the 17th most popular dog registered with America's Pet Registry Inc. They are commonly called “The King of Toys.” These are just a few interesting facts.

  • German Pinschers Are Not Small Dobermans Or Large Min Pins
The information shown is based on the ANKC Breed Standard Please note that many cropped ear dogs are used as examples to illustrate various properties in the breed, however the cropping of ears is not permitted in Australia HISTORY German Pinschers are not small Dobermans or large Min Pins. The Standard Schnauzer is the relation to which the German Pinscher is connected. Early sketches show clearly how similar these two breeds once were. Time and breeding practices have since separated the “look” to a degree but the genetic foundations remain connected. The 3 Pinscher breeds. The German Pinscher can lay claim to be some of the foundation for the others. The German Pinscher took back some of the genetic material offered in the mid fifties when Herr Werner Jung brought the breed back from the brink of extinction with the introduction of three Miniature Pinschers. One of the first Werner Jung Pinschers produced during the rebuilding of this breed. Note the Min Pin influence in the head and bone. Back from the Brink By the mid 1950’s the German Pinscher was so rare it was thought in some areas to be extinct. Herr Jung, at the time a Standard Schnauzer breeder of reputation, took it upon himself to try to bring back the breed. Finding a bitch of good quality in East Germany, he risked his safety to secret her across the border. Once safely in his care, he bred her and her future offspring with three Miniature Shown above is “Jutta”, one of Pinschers that had more German the Miniature Pinschers used Pinscher structure and were large to help bring back the breed for their breed.
