Dear Wildcat Family and Friends, Welcome to the year like no other! While the pandemic has impacted every Board of Education person in our community and country, we do hope you had a peaceful summer and an excellent start to the 2020-2021 school year. You are seeing our yearly The Sherman Central School Board of Education members serve 5-year terms and calendar in October this year due to all the unknowns that we faced over the volunteer their time to the district. They are responsible for establishing district policy, summer. However, with the help of our parents, Board of Education, faculty and staff, we were able to reopen school successfully with new policies and preparing the annual budget, and ensuring that the district adheres to the NYS State procedures designed to keep our students safe while providing the best Education Laws and Regulations. During the 2020-21 academic year the Sherman education in our region. Central School District Board of Education will hold its regularly scheduled meetings Needless to say that while stressful, seeing our students walk through our doors at 5:30 PM, location TBA. (See meeting schedule below) Additional special meetings on September 8, and then seeing our high school students on September 11, may also be held as needed. The public is always welcome to attend. was the proudest day of my nearly nine years in Sherman. Everyone in our school community contributed to making it happen. While we may not have seen their smiles directly, the attitudes and energy of our students gave everyone at The current board of education members are: Brian Bates • President, SCS the boost we needed to make all the hard work worth it. Colleen Meeder • Vice President, Jennifer Ferreira, Teresa Guzman & Timothy Sears. We completely reinvented the way we deliver education to our students this . summer, all with student safety in mind. Our building and maintenance staff have new cleaning procedures to ensure a safe environment. Our transportation staff is taking temperatures of students while they enter the bus and looking for signs of symptoms. Our cafeteria staff is now delivering meals to classrooms and homes to reduce exposure. Our administration team and guidance staff created a new schedule that allows for bringing as many students back into the building as possible, and to allow for in-person and live online learning at the same time. Our health office is working with our aides to check temperatures and screen students for symptoms. And finally, our technology director ensured that each family who needed access to the Internet for online learning had a hotspot available.

It is important to everyone that all of our hard work to open school not go to waste. We are asking students to wear masks to school and remain socially distant at all times. For the time being, we have not allowed visitors into the building, including parents. We are not allowing groups of students to gather in common places and encouraging teachers to take their students outside when Emergency Closing or 2-Hour Delay possible for learning. Finally, we have distanced desks and placed markers in hallways to keep 6ft distancing between students. We do all of this to stay open A 2-hour delay means that school will begin at 9:50 AM instead of and to date, our faculty, staff, students, and parents have been outstanding in 7:50 AM. The bus routes will commence 2 hours later than normal. realizing these new regulations and how important they are to follow. Dismissal will be at the normal time for all students. Permission to give medication at school Health Info School personnel are often asked to give over the counter and prescribed medicine to students during school hours. These medicines may be in the form of eye drops, eardrops, pills, tablets, capsules, ointments or liquids.

State Education Law prohibits any school personnel including the school nurse from administering medicine or giving treatment, other than First-Aid, to school children without certain conditions and orders being adhered to. The medication must be brought directly to the school nurse, JoAnn Kopta, by the parent or guardian and must be labeled by the pharmacist clearly indicating the date, name of the child, name of the physician, name of the medication dosage and frequency of the medication to be delivered. No medications will be administered that have been brought in by the student or given to a bus driver. Students are not permitted to keep medications in their locker or on their person unless the physician has specifically written an order indicating that the student is self-directed and must carry the medication on his/her person. The student must also inform the school nurse and supply this order to the school nurse. The student will then be evaluated by the school nurse for proper handling and self-direction before the student can keep his/her medications with him/her in school. The school nurse will be sending home permission forms for students who had been administered medications last year. If your child has been prescribed new medication over the summer you may JoAnn Kopta at SCS, PO Box 950, Sherman NY 14781.

When to Keep your Child Home If your child gets sick, it is often most appropriate to keep him/her home from school. A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff.

When Should You Keep Your Child Home? 1. Fever in the past 24 hours (100.4) Covid questionnaire 2. Diarrhea or Vomiting in the past 24 hours 3. Chills 4. Bacterial infections (throat, tonsils, sinus, etc., and must be taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school) 5. Head lice—unless they have been treated according to the nurse or doctor’s instructions 6. Pink Eye—any drainage or discharge from one or both eyes (must be treated with medication for at least 24 hours or obtain physician note stating student may return) 7. Unexplained rashes—please have your child see a doctor and obtain a note stating student may return (all unexplained rashes are considered contagious)

If your child becomes ill at school and the school nurse feels the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take him/her home from school. Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your child home from school and that child care is available in case of illness. If your daytime or emergency phone number changes during the year, please notify your school nurse immediately. HOW COULD MY CHILD GET HEAD Please remember that we have a peanut restricted environment. Please refrain from bringing any foods or snacks containing peanuts or LICE? tree-nut products into our school and on our buses. If you have any questions, feel free to call JoAnn Kopta in the Health Office at 761-4814. The fact is – any place children spend time together head lice can invade and spread. Parents – Please check your children and other family members for Lice nits and Louse at least 3 weeks before school begins. This is the ideal time to begin treatment and prevent bringing lice to school. Treatment should be given and followed up with a second treatment according to instructions (generally 7-10 days after initial treatment) for best results.

Of course, the difficult task of cleaning your home, furniture and clothing must also take place to be successful. While Sherman Central School District’s primary goal is the education of our students, we must ask students with active lice to be removed from the classroom to receive treatment. The only way to establish elimination of the lice is to remove all nits. It is also in an effort to protect all of our students and to prevent the need for repeated treatment with harsh chemical shampoo which eventually will lose its effectiveness and can cause allergic and toxic reactions.

We also recognize the hardship of lost time at work, laundry, and are especially concerned for the embarrassment the children feel when they are repeatedly needing treatment. Let’s get this issue out of our hair!

Annual Screenings

Annual hearing, vision, scoliosis, height and weight screenings will be done per state mandates. Should your son/ daughter have an irregular screening you will be contacted. If your son/daughter tests within normal limits you will not be contacted.
