  • Tricks with Mirrors: Sharpies and Their Representations
1 Published in Youth Cultures and Subcultures: Australian Perspectives , (2015), Sarah Baker, Brady Robards and Bob Buttigieg (eds), Ashgate, Surrey. Tricks with Mirrors: Sharpies and their Representations Sian Supski and Peter Beilharz Melbourne’ s count erculture happened in the sixties, but in some ways came to fruition into the seventies. Part of this scene was the Sharpies. The Sharpies were a network of Melbourne gangs, cha racterised by Italian fashion, ‘sharp’ looks, fierce music, and high levels of violence on tribal grounds and directed at outg roups like hippies. This chapter uses the work of two major period artists to discuss this culture and open some questions that follow. The first is Lobby Loyde, godfather of Australian rock guitar, whose band Coloured Balls were appropriated by the Sharpies. The second is Carol Jerrems, a photographer of extraordinary power and capacity to connect, whose work came to intersect with Sharpies in intriguing ways. The chapter then connects and contrasts these arti stic representations of Sharpies with a recently emerging literature of Sharp self - representation. The primary purposes of this chapter are given to the recovery of memory and experience, to the centrality of the oral and visual in everyday life, of inn ovation, reaction and violence in the fibre of a city and a culture like Melbourne’s in the seventies. The point of this chapter is to contribute to sociology in general by narrating some glimpses of this period and its cultures through Lobby Loyde and Car ol Jerrems, and this newer Sharpie testimonial literature. The following discussion, then, seeks to recover some sense of that place, time and culture and its 2 creative and dangerous tensions.

  • Land of the Golden Fleece—
Land of the Golden Fleece— Arthur Streeton in the Western District A Geelong Gallery exhibition, 27 February to 13 June 2016 Opening: Friday 26 February (by invitation only) Geelong Gallery is delighted to present Land of the Golden Fleece—Arthur Streeton in the Western District, a major exhibition of exquisite landscape paintings of Victoria’s Western District by one of Australia’s foremost and much-loved artists, Arthur Streeton. On display from February to June, this exhibition focuses on the Geelong-born artist’s work from the years 1920-32, following his return from an extended period in Europe. Bringing together some 30 paintings from public and private collections including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria, National Gallery of Australia and Geelong Gallery, and curated by the Gallery in consultation with acknowledged Streeton expert Geoffrey Smith, Land of the Golden Fleece depicts locations in Victoria’s Western District frequented by the artist—Dunkeld, Halls Gap and the Grampians, as well as western coastal locations such as Lorne and Port Campbell—this vividly coloured and virtuoso series will, collectively, be a revelation for audiences. Two of the three paintings titled Land of the Golden Fleece will be seen together for the first time since their initial exhibition in Melbourne in 1927. Undoubtedly one of Australia’s most significant painters, Streeton came to prominence alongside fellow Australian Impressionist painters including Frederick McCubbin, Tom Roberts and Charles Conder in the 9×5 Impressions exhibition of 1889. In 1891, the painting Golden summer, Eaglemont (1889) was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and hung ‘on the line’ to widespread acclaim.

Carrington Park at 40-52 Elizabeth Street, Rosebud, is a double-storey hip-roofed clinker brick Functionalist-style house, dominated by a projecting upper level with continuous window wall opening onto a narrow balcony with canted sunroom at the corner. The house was built in 1941 for Leonard & Muriel Moran (of the Moran & Cato retail empire) to the design of noted modernist architect Best Overend. Since 1964, the property has operated as the Carrington Park Club. How is it Significant? The house is of architectural, aesthetic and historical significance to the Shire of Mornington Peninsula Why is it Significant? Architecturally, Carrington Park is significant as a noted example of the work of Best Overend, Victoria's leading champion of the 1930s modernist movement. This house, which represents the architect's largest single residential commission, typifies his earnest (but never entirely successful) attempts to adapt pure modernism to the Australian context. Architecturally, the house is also of note as one of the last grand “country seat” residences, with lavish reception rooms and servants' quarters, to be built in Victoria before the Second World War.

  • Foreign Influences in Australian Photography 1930-80
FOREIGN INFLUENCES IN AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHY 1930-80 A lecture delivered at APSCON, Canberra Robert Deane, Honorary Researcher Department of Photography National Gallery of Australia 10TH OCTOBER 2000 Given the time at our disposal it is possible only to skim the surface of this challenging topic, looking at a selected range of areas and trying to assess their impact on Australian photography at its widest ambit. Film, photographic publications, exhibitions, photographers both immigrant and emigrant, and world politics all have their part to play in this examination. It is perhaps useful to set out some caveats before commencing on this topic. As an undergraduate student of Cypriot archaeology many years ago, I learned, through the none- too quiet insistence of Professor James Stewart, that the inhabitants of Cyprus did not go to bed one night in Early Bronze I and awake the next morning to find it was Early Bronze II. Indeed he insisted that, apart from the odd cataclysmic earthquake, artistic styles have never changed abruptly in either place or time anywhere. I was, and remain, a dutiful student and thus do not subscribe to any notion that there was any orderly progression in photography from Pre-Raphaelites through Pictorialists etc to whatever post-modern “ism” is the “in” thing with critics today. Photographers, it seems to me, are not only constantly seeking to break new ground in the way they perceive and present the world but they are constantly revisiting the styles, techniques and processes of the past to assist them in that challenge. If one sought a simple example for this, those of you who visit the National Gallery will be able to compare Dupain’s superb Madonna-like portrait from New Guinea made during the war with the great iconic Sunbather made some years earlier.
