NOTE OF THE NIGHT It’s Tricky – Alex Ovechkin scored three goals on Wednesday against St. Louis, marking his 16th career hat trick. Ovechkin ranks first among active NHL players in hat tricks and second in franchise history in career hat tricks, trailing Peter Bondra (19). In addition, Ovechkin ranks first in the NHL in hat tricks since 1996-97 and third in NHL history in hat tricks by Russian-born NHL players (Pavel Bure: 20, Alexander Mogilny: 17). Wednesday marked the first time in Ovechkin’s career he has registered a hat trick in less than 16 minutes of time on ice (15:29) and his second hat trick in as many games against the Blues. (4/9 at STL: 3g). The Moscow native is only the second player in the NHL in the last five years to register a hat trick in two consecutive games against the same team (Mikkel Boedker vs. OTT, 2015). In addition, Ovechkin is the third player in Capitals history to register consecutive hat tricks versus one team. In his first season with the team in 2015-16, Bylsma guided the Sabres to a 27-point improvement. Buffalo finished 35-36-11 overall and enjoyed the second-largest points percentage improvement in franchise history.

Bylsma joined the Sabres after spending six seasons as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he led the team to a 252-117-32 overall regular-season record and became the winningest head coach in Penguins history.

The Grand Haven, Mich. native began his coaching career in 2004-05 as an assistant coach for the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks (AHL).
