Parish of Ladock Vestry Minutes 1800S LADOCK PARISH Minutes of Vestry Meetings (CRO Document Reference DDP/03/8/1; LDS film 1597324) [29 May 1838 – image 959] At a Special Meeting of the Rate Payers of the Parish of Ladock held at the Vestry this 29th day of May 1838 for the purpose of nominating and appointing a proper person to fill the office of Collector of the Poor’s Rates of the said Parish for the present year and we whose names are hereunto subscribed do hereby nominate and appoint Richard Reed to be Collector of the Poor’s Rate for this present year accordingly [signed] Robert Trethewy Churchwarden William Trebilcock Overseers J.H. Henwood [22 Jun 1838 – image 960] Ladock June 22 1838 At a Meeting of the Rate payers of this Parish held at the Vestry for the purpose of taking into consideration what measures to adopt respecting the appeal that has been entered against the Poor’s Rate by the Revd. Ware It was resolved and agreed – That a committee consisting of the nine following persons viz. Francis Searle, Thomas Tank, William Hotten, William Hooper, Robert Trethewy, John Reed, Reuben Dyer Bone, John Bassett and William Trebilcock be appointed to inspect the Revd. Henry Ware’s books of Accounts as respects his incomes from Tithes and other incomes from this Parish (Mr. Ware having agreed to produce his books and necessary particulars respecting them) and they the said nine persons shall obtain information and the majority of them shall determine on what charges shall be made on him in respect of the Rates of this Parish, and their decision shall be decisive and binding on all parties. Bone [9 Jul 1838 – image 961] Ladock July 9th 1838 We the undersigned being a Majority of the Committee that was appointed at the Meeting of the Ratepayers of this Parish held at the Vestry on the 22nd day of June last to decide and settle on what amount the Revd. Henry Ware should be charged on the Poor and Highway Rates in respect of Tithes arising from this Parish, do hereby determine and award as follows, That the Revd. Henry Ware shall be charged and assessed in respect of his incomes from Tithes as on Rate No.2 made the 10th of March 1838, and also on Rate No.1 made the 30th May 1838 viz. Hooper [4 Jan 1839 – image 961] At a Meeting of the Landowners of the Parish of Ladock held at the Falmouth Arms in the Village of Bissick in the said Parish of Ladock on Friday the 4th of January 1839 conformable to the suggestions of the Tithe Commissioners. Present – James Hendy Esq. Mr. Edward Blake George Simmons Esq. Mr. James H. Retallack Charles F. Andrew Esq. Mr. John Bassett Mr. Henry Trethewy Mr. William Bassett John Simmons Esq. Mr. William Chapman Mr. Robert Julyan Mr. James Brewer James Hendy Esq. was proposed and appointed to be Chairman to communicate between the Landowners and the board of Tithe Commissioners. Resolved that James Hendy Esq. John Simmons Esq. and Mr. Henry Trethewy form a Committee to inspect the returns required by the Tithe Commissioners, and that this Meeting be adjourned to Wednesday the 9th of January next at Pearce’s Hotel, Truro [signed] Robt. Huddy Retallack [17 Jan 1839 – image 962] Ladock January 17. 1839 At a Meeting of the Rate payers of this Parish held at the Vestry Room this 17th day of January 1839 It is resolved, That a Rate or Assessment for the relief of the Poor, after the rate of four pence in the pound be made for the quarter commencing on the 25 day of December last past. And that the Collector be hereby ordered and empowered to charge the Revd. Henry Ware on the sum of £650 on the said Rate in respect of Tithes, as the gross estimated value, and to deduct the sum of £20 for expenses in collecting the said Tithes and Insurance &c, making the Rateable Value to be £630. That Reuben Dyer Bone Junr. be appointed to serve the Office of Assistant Overseer for the year ensuing with a Salary of twelve pounds for the year. The presentation of all monitoring features into these catchment maps will assist in developing an integrated approach to catchment management and operation. The water quality monitoring maps and index were originally incorporated into the Catchment Action Plans. They provide a visual presentation of monitored sites within a catchment and enable water quality data to be accessed easily by all departments and external organisations. The maps bring together information from different sections within Water Quality.     Extract from Kelly’s Directory of Cornwall, 1883 (page 913) LADOCK Ladock is a township and parish and village, situated on the high road from Truro to St Columb by way of Tresillian, 8 miles north-east from Truro and 2 north-west from the Grampound Road railway station, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Powder, Truro union and county court district, rural deanery of Powder, Cornwall archdeaconry, and diocese of Truro. The Grampound Road station (see Grampound Road), and part of the village which has grown up round it, are in this parish. The church of St Ladoca, seated on the brow of a hill, is a building of stone in the Early English style, and consists of nave, south aisle, north transept, or Trethurffe aisle, south porch and an embattled tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells, about to be re-cast and 3 new ones added: the church was thoroughly restored in 1864 under the supervision of the late G.E. Street esq. R.A. architect, at a cost of £2,000, the whole of which was defrayed by the present rector: there are two stained windows at the east end, one of which is a memorial to Mrs M.A. Wise, 1862; the other was inserted to the memory of Richard Wise M.D.; there is an ancient Norman font of Catacluse stone: the memorials in the church are modern: in the churchyard is a tomb inscribed to Nicholas Cornelius, of Ladock, 1632. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1684; marriages, 1686; burials, 1683.

H. RYVES, H. M. QUICK and A. G. PARSONS (kindly assisted by Dr. R. H. BLAIR) Forty-nine new members joined the Society during 1954. We regret the loss by death of seven members; thirteen have resigned, and the resignation of twelve more assumed by reason of non­ payment of subscription. This makes the total of ordinary mem­ bers 607. Mr. Hayman (M.P. for Camborne-Falmouth) was elected an Honorary member at the Annual Meeting, in recognition of his services during the passage through Parliament of the Bird Protec­ tion Act. The Twenty-third Annual Meeting was held in the Museum, Truro, on May 1st. Mr. Hurrell showed his films of Birds of Prey at the nest, and of Flamingoes in the Camargue. At the Autumn meeting on November 6th, Mr. Parsons spoke of his visit to Swedish Lapland, showing some of his own films and photographs. One Executive Committee meeting was held during the year. The twelfth century witnessed the heyday of the Merlinic prophecy as a topic of special—and sometimes even obsessive—interest among Eu- ropean literati. The publication of Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Prophetiae Merlini ca. 1135 was doubtless the pivotal moment in the development of the new intellectual hobby of interpreting and glossing the corpus of vaticination attributed to the semi-legendary poet-prophet-magician.2 Within the next two generations, writers as diverse as Gerald of Wales, Suger of St. Denis, Orderic Vitalis, and Alain de Lille had all weighed in with interpretations of Geoffrey’s obscure (indeed, probably obscurantist) prophecies.3 That the glossing of Geoffrey’s work became a fad among the intellectual luminaries of the twelfth century tends, however, to elide the very salient fact that Geoffrey’s presentation of these prophecies represents a co-opting of a thriving native British literary genre. INTRODUCTION CATCHMENT ACTION PLANS are designed to be a simple, practical means of directing resources to achieve environmental improvements on a priority basis, between and within catchments. Ihey set out the essential routine tasks, and a five year programme of specific actions for each catchment to meet regional and national targets. Changes may occur where unplanned work such as an extreme drought requires priority. The NRA has inherited a legacy of environmental challenges arising from the use and abuse of our natural resources. Although significant progress has already been made it will be many years before all the work needed can be assessed, funded and carried out. To achieve the environmental objectives will require not just the clear, vigorous direction of the NRA towards priority work but the help and support of the whole community. The NRA has consulted with the Regional Advisory Board and Advisory Committees and the local interests about the draft action plans and the format is the outcome of those discussions. Progress to achieve the Action Plan objectives will normally be reviewed on an annual basis but more frequently where severe problems have been identified. 2. ROUTINE SERVICES Despite the fact that the NRA is largely a reactive, regulatory body it is possible to plan for much of the environmental protection work even the fact that unpredictable events will occur! Much of the routine workload such as monitoring*/ enforcement of statutes and dealing with pollution and flooding incidents needs to have clear priority to ensure that it is dealt with to satisfactory standards throughout the region.
