LADOCK

Ladock is a township and parish and village, situated on the high road from to St Columb by way of Tresillian, 8 miles north-east from Truro and 2 north-west from the Road railway station, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Powder, Truro union and county court district, rural deanery of Powder, Cornwall archdeaconry, and . The Grampound Road station (see Grampound Road), and part of the village which has grown up round it, are in this parish. The church of St Ladoca, seated on the brow of a hill, is a building of stone in the Early English style, and consists of nave, south aisle, north transept, or Trethurffe aisle, south porch and an embattled tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells, about to be re-cast and 3 new ones added: the church was thoroughly restored in 1864 under the supervision of the late G.E. Street esq. R.A. architect, at a cost of £2,000, the whole of which was defrayed by the present rector: there are two stained windows at the east end, one of which is a memorial to Mrs M.A. Wise, 1862; the other was inserted to the memory of Richard Wise M.D.; there is an ancient Norman font of Catacluse stone: the memorials in the church are modern: in the churchyard is a tomb inscribed to Nicholas Cornelius, of Ladock, 1632. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1684; marriages, 1686; burials, 1683. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge £720, net yearly value £600 with good residence, in the gift of and held since 1846 by the Rev. Richard Farquhar Wise M.A. of St John’s College, Cambridge, hon. canon of Truro and rural dean of Powder. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Bissick and Bible Christian chapels at New Mills and Scarcewater. Trethurffe House, formerly the seat of the Trethurffes and afterwards of the Courtenays, was destroyed and a farmhouse erected on its site, which is occupied by Mr. John Searle Gill. Nansough is situated about 1½ miles south-west from the church; the house was rebuilt by the late Charles Andrew esq. and is now the property of Michael Henry Williams esq. The principal landowners are Michael Henry Williams esq. J.P., D.L., Viscount Falmouth, the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, John Tremayne esq. J.P., D.L., Lord Robartes, Augustus Stephens esq., Arthur Coode esq. J.P. and J.C. Williams esq. The soil is sparry at the surface; subsoil, spar & marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 5,691 acres; rateable value, £5,320; and the population in 1881 was 937. The hamlet of Bissick is situated near to the church. Hill Coos is another hamlet. Letters delivered at 7.45 a.m.; dispatched at 4.50 p.m. National School (mixed). Commodious schools were erected with master’s house, in 1867, by R.F. & M.A.H. Wise, on a plot of ground adjoining the church; there is an endowment of £5 a year, left by the Rev. St John Eliot, formerly rector of this parish; with this exception the whole of the current expenses are defrayed by the present rector; capacity, 150; average attendance, 75.
