    Clare from Atlas and cyclopedia of Ireland. The general history (1905) NAME. The county is named from the little town of Clare, near the mouth of the Fergus : and this got its name from a bridge of planks by which the Fergus was crossed in old times : the Gaelic word clar signifying a board or plank. SIZE AND POPULATION. This county has water all round (namely, the Atlantic, the Shannon, and Lough Derg) except for 40 miles of its north and northeastern margin, where it is bounded by Galway. Greatest length from Loop Head to the boundary near Lough Atorick on the northeastern border, 67 miles ; breadth from Limerick to Black Head (nearly, but not quite, at right angles to the length), 42 miles ; breadth from Black Head to the shore west of Bunratty (at right angles to the length), 35 miles ; area, 1,294 square miles ; population, 141,457. SURFACE. It may be stated in a general way that the northern part and the eastern margin are mountainous or hilly ; and the middle and south form a broad plain, occasionally broken up by low hills, and in one place by a considerable mountain (Slievecallan). The barony of Burren in the north is an extraordinary region of limestone rock, rising into hills of bare gray limestone, the intervening valleys or flats being also composed of limestone, with great blocks strewn over the surface, both hills and valleys being relieved here and there by lovely grassy patches of pure green. MOUNTAINS AND HILLS. The highest summit of the Burren district is Slieve Elva (1,109), a conspicuous flat-topped mountain ; Cappanawalla 1,028) rises direct over Ballyvaghan Bay ; and in the east of the same district is Slievecarran (1,075).

Alan O’Callaghan proposed a full adjournment of the meeting in accordance with Standing Order No. 12 as a mark of respect to our friend and colleague Betty Devanny, R.I.P., Administrative Officer, Rural and Community Department of the Rural Development Directorate, on her sudden and untimely passing. This was seconded by Cllr. J. Crowe and agreed by all members present. The members extended their sympathy on behalf of the Council to Betty’s husband Seán and her daughters Sinead, Orla and Niamh and her son Sean Óg. In proposing the adjournment Cllr. A. O’Callaghan described Betty as a loyal public civil servant, who was a master of her job and full of life.

IV., c 99. Their origins pre-date this act, they were used in the assessments of local taxation under the Grand Juries. Over time many were split into smaller units and a few were amalgamated. Townlands and parishes - smaller units - were detached from one barony and allocated to an adjoining one at vaious intervals. This the size of many baronines changed, albiet not substantially. Furthermore, reclamation of sea and loughs expanded the land mass of Ireland, consequently between 1851 and 1861 Ireland increased its size by 9,433 acres. The census Commissioners used Barony units for organising the census data from 1821 to 1891. These notes are to guide the user through these changes.     McInerney/Lmoylan 18/1/13 8:20 PM Page 81 North Munster Antiquarian Journal vol. 52, 2012 81 Lettermoylan of Clann Bhruaideadha: A résumé of their landholding, topography & history LUKE McINERNEY This paper surveys the landholding of the learned poet-chronicler lineage, Clann Bhruaideadha of west Co. Clare and touches on the relationship between Clann Bhruaideadha and their estate at Lettermoylan on Slieve Callan. As members of the Gaelic learned class Clann Bhruaideadha had extensive landholding in Ibrickan and other parts of Co. Clare, including church land, crannóg and towerhouse settlements. Confusion appears to exist in Co. Clare as to the whereabouts of Lettermoylan.1 Lettermoylan, it may be observed, was one of the historical estates of the Meic Bhruaideadha (viz. Clann Bhruaideadha2), a learned poet-chronicler lineage that was among the literati service families whose chief patrons were the Uí Bhriain of Thomond. Uncertainty over the location of Lettermoylan is compounded by the observation that its location on the eastern slopes of Slieve Callan (Sliabh Calláin) afforded the area little value in agricultural terms. It is deemed an unlikely residence for a high status family of the Gaelic literary class. The land surrounding the slopes of Slieve Callan are characterised as marginal and of low productive value, a fact easily deduced from a walk around the boggy perimeter of its eastern and southern slopes. This confusion arose from the misleading identification in John O’Donovan’s edited version of the Annals of the Four Masters (1856).3 There it states Lettermoylan lay in Dysert within a subdivision of ‘Glangee’.
