They join Gennady Padalka, Mikhail Kornienko and Scott Kelly. The latter two are more than four months into a nearly year-long mission on the space station. The launch was postponed by about two months after the April failure of an unmanned Russian cargo ship, which raised concerns about Russian rocketry. Another Russian cargo ship was successfully launched in early July. National Aeronautics and Space Administration International Space Station [MISSION SUMMARY] began March 11, 2015 and ends May 13, 2015. This expedition will include the EXPEDITION 43 beginning of research projects focusing on the One-Year mission, which includes medical, psychological and biomedical studies with NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly and Roscosmos Cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko who will spend a year in space. Expedition 43 also will include astrophysics research, physical science investigations and technology demonstrations. There are no spacewalks planned during Expedition 43. Weislogel1 and Ryan M. Jenson2 IRPI LLC, Portland, Oregon, 97223 Life support systems for plant, animal, and crew habitats are replete with the challenges of managing poorly wetting aqueous solutions in a low-g environment. A brief review of noteworthy on-orbit system failures provides ample renewed motivation to understand microgravity capillary phenomena to the point such failures may be avoided in the future. Historic and recent NASA-funded low-g experiments are highlighted that greatly expand our experience base and comfort level to prepare for and preferably exploit capillary forces. Our specific aim is to replace the passive role of gravity on earth with the combined passive roles of surface tension, wetting, and container geometry in space. We demonstrate a general approach highlighting high-TRL examples pertinent to urine collection and processing. From this specific example we demonstrate more specific applications to passive in-line separator devices, beverage cups, and bio-sample de-bubblers. Broader applications can be made to other challenging processes such as brine drying, condensing heat exchangers, liquid sorbent CO2 scrubbers, wet lab unit operations, and habitats for plants and animals. The International Space Station provides an excellent laboratory in which to conduct such research. It is essential that the station be used to its fullest potential via cooperative studies and the sharing of equipment and instruments between the international partners. The application of the lessons learned from long-duration human spaceflight and analog research environments will not only lead to advances in technology and greater knowledge to protect future space travelers, but will also enhance life on Earth. The 13th annual International Space Medicine Summit on Oct. 10-13, 2019, brings together the leading physicians, space biomedical scientists, engineers, astronauts, cosmonauts and educators from the world’s spacefaring nations for high-level discussions to identify necessary space medicine research goals as well as ways to further enhance international cooperation and collaborative research. All ISS partners are represented at the summit. The summit is co-sponsored by the Baker Institute Space Policy Program, Texas A&M University College of Engineering and Baylor College of Medicine.
