Academy to Honor Actress with Special Tribute at New York's Lincoln Center

NEW YORK, NY November 21,2001 -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will honor actress Claire Bloom with a special program titled "Bold, Brave and Beautiful ... A Salute to Claire Bloom" to be presented by the Academy's New York Event's Committee at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center on Wednesday, November 28 , at 8:00 PM.

The salute to Bloom's film career will feature a screening of highlights from her nearly 50 years in film. The program will be hosted by longtime CBS correspondent and renowned flutist Eugenia Zukerman. Academy Award winner , who co-starred with Bloom in "", will share his reminiscences of working with her. Academy President Frank Pierson will also be in attendance.

Claire Bloom was trained in the classical theater in , where she began her acting career at the age of 17 as Ophelia in a Stratford-upon-Avon production of "Hamlet". She went on to London stage productions of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Ring around the Moon," and made her motion picture debut in Charles Chaplin's 1952 film "Limelight".

Throughout Bloom's career she was featured in leading roles opposite some of the world's best-known actors. The evening's program will featured the actress in highlights from films such as "Richard III" (with ), "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold" and "Look Back in Anger" (with ), "A Doll's House" (with ), " " (with ), "The Illustrated Man" (with ), "The Haunting" (with ). Bloom also worked with such actors as George C. Scott, , and .

Arthur Manson, chair of the Academy's New York Events Committee, said: "Claire Bloom's distinguished career is notable for the broad diversity of roles she has played and her collaboration with many of the world's finest actors. We are proud to add her to our roster of filmmakers and stars whom we have honored in the past, including last year's honoree Teresa Wright; as well as Richard Widmark, Celeste Holm, , Betty Comden, Adolph Green and the late Joseph L. Mankiewicz."
