NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee Conservation Assessment of Meridolum maryae Clarke, 2009 (Camaenidae) (Maroubra Woodland Snail) C Bray, J Rowley, June 2019 NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee Meridolum maryae Clarke, 2009 (Camaenidae) Distribution: Endemic to NSW Current EPBC Act Status: Not listed Current NSW BC Act Status: Not listed Proposed listing on NSW BC Act and EPBC Act: Endangered Conservation Advice: Meridolum maryae Clarke, 2009 (Camaenidae) Summary of Conservation Assessment Meridolum maryae Clarke 2009 (Maroubra Woodland Snail) was found to be eligible for listing as Endangered under the IUCN Criterion B1ab(iii)(iv) + 2ab(iii)(iv). This species is eligible because i) the species has a highly restricted geographic range; ii) the habitat is severely fragmented iii) there are a number of threats affecting the habitat and mature individuals at all populations inferring continuing decline. Description and Taxonomy Meridolum maryae was described by Clarke (2009) as: “Shell. Subglobose, 10.3–16.3 mm in height, 14.8–19.2 mm in width. Spire moderately elevated. Aperture roundly ovate, height 7.2–10.9 mm, width 9.0–12.0 mm. Total number of whorls 4.7–5.5. Last teleoconch whorl rounded, or with slight angulation; height 9.1–13.3 mm. Teleoconch sculpture of fine to well developed growth lines (giving the shell a rough textured surface in older individuals), with weak to well developed pustules. Teleoconch periostracal sculpture of weak zigzag ridges with minor sculpture between major ridges. Protoconch sculpture strongly pustulose. Shell pale yellow to tan, to bleached white in older specimens, with small red umbilical patch and narrow red subsutural band. -

State of the Cumberland Plain Report 2017-2018
About this report The Cumberland Plain, Western Sydney is our home - and it is in crisis. Government policy on population, planning and biodiversity are driving some of the highest rates of landclearing seen anywhere in the world and forcibly displacing entire rural communities. Our communities and our ecosystems are at breaking point: this is a war on people, community and the wild. This report outlines the state of the natural environment of Cumberland Plain in 2018 in our own voices. The Cumberland Plain is more than just an ecosystem or a calculation of hectares conserved and lost: it is our home and the traditional lands of the Darug and Gundungurra people. This report presents a review of the state of the environment in Western Sydney from the voices of local experts and volunteers here on the ground. The report has been published by the The Greater Sydney Landcare Network (GSLN), a membership-based community organisation that aims to support individuals and groups who are working to protect, restore and improve the natural environment of Greater Sydney. The report has been developed collectively through the Cumberland Conservation Network (CCN), an informal network of over 80 local conservation-minded people in Western Sydney. The CCN brings together the local environment groups, community champions, Bushcare and Landcare leaders, teachers, ecologists and government staff to provide a common voice on issues we care about. Conservation Advice Pommerhelix duralensis DURAL LAND SNAIL Taxonomy Conventionally accepted as Pommerhelix duralensis (Cox, 1868) Conservation status Endangered: Criterion 2 B1,(a),(b)(i)(ii)(iii)(iv)(v) Species can be listed as threatened under state and territory legislation. For information on the listing status of this species under relevant state or territory legislation, see http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/sprat/public/sprat.pl Reason for conservation assessment by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee This advice follows assessment of information provided by a public nomination to list Pommerhelix duralensis (Dural land snail). Description Pommerhelix duralensis (the Dural land snail), also commonly known as the Dural woodland snail (Stanisic, 2010), is a medium sized snail with a dark brown to black semi translucent subglobose (almost spherical shaped) shell. Adults grow approximately 10–23 mm in height and 14–23 mm in width. The Dural land snail superficially resembles the related species Meridolum corneovirens (Cumberland Plain land snail), with which the Dural land snail is parapatric (the species’ ranges are immediately adjacent to each other but do not significantly overlap) (Clark, 2005). Distribution The Dural land snail is endemic to New South Wales, Australia. The species is a shale- influenced habitat specialist, which occurs in low densities along the northwest fringes of the Cumberland Plain on shale-sandstone transitional landscapes (Shea, 2001; Hornsby Shire Council, 2006; Clarke, 2009; Ridgeway et. al., 2014). The species is known to occur as far north as St Albans. -

Samantha Clarke 20 June 2004 ABSTRACT Temperate grassy woodlands throughout the world have suffered the effects of changed disturbance regimes, in particular, fire and grazing, due to human activities. Since European settlement fire and tree clearing has been used to modify grassy woodland vegetation for livestock grazing and agriculture. As a consequence some species, particularly shrubs and trees, have been reduced or eliminated and both native and introduced grasses have become more dominant. -

Cumberland Plain Woodland ecology then and now: Interpretations and implications from the work of Robert Brown and others. Cunninghamia 7 (4): 631–650. (Paper presented at Robert Brown 200 conference.) By the time Robert Brown visited western Sydney (1802–1805), its vegetation was already beginning to be affected by settlers’ activities. The Cumberland Plain Woodland that occurred on the clay soils has now been extensively cleared and long-term management of remnants for species conservation is of high priority. Robert Brown’s collections in the area, together with descriptions by Atkinson, Cunningham and other writers, provide us with valuable information on the vegetation and its floristic composition. Supported by recent site monitoring at Mount Annan Botanic Garden at Campbelltown, we interpret this information in the light of current ecological knowledge and conclude that: • Woodland structure is variable in the short term; therefore seeking to conserve structure exactly as described in the historical literature is not necessarily appropriate. • While the historical literature provides evidence of the broad floristic composition of the Cumberland Plain area overall, it does not provide sufficient detail on individual sites; future management of specific sites must therefore be based on current data. • The evidence suggests relatively few species have become extinct overall, possibly because many species appear to be relatively long-lived, and have mechanisms to survive drought, fire and grazing, though not soil alteration. -
