And it's why, when Dr Walid called me to the morgue to listen to a corpse, I recognised the tune it was playing. Something violently supernatural had happened to the victim, strong enough to leave its imprint like a wax cylinder recording. Cyrus Wilkinson, part-time jazz saxophonist and full-time accountant, had apparently dropped dead of a heart attack just after finishing a gig in a Soho jazz club. He wasn't the first. No one was going to let me exhume corpses to see if they were playing my tune, so it was back to old-fashioned legwork, starting in Soho, the heart of the scene. I didn't trust the lovely Simone, Cyrus' ex-lover, professional jazz kitten and as inviting as a Rubens' portrait, but I needed her help: there were monsters stalking Soho, creatures feeding off that special gift that separates the great musician from someone who can raise a decent tune. What they take is beauty. What they leave behind is sickness, failure and broken lives. And as I hunted them, my investigation got tangled up in another story: a brilliant trumpet player, Richard 'Lord' Grant - my father - who managed to destroy his own career, twice.

A classic story with the classic Doctor Who monsterBy S. NeedhamThe only novelization of a transmitted episode to make it into the 50th anniversary collection. This is considered by many to be Sylvester McCoy's best story as the Doctor. The novelization was considered one of the best of its type as well, so it is no surprise that it was selected. I never thought the episode Remembrance of the Daleks was as brilliant as everyone else. To me is seemed like a lot of repetitive action with no great dialogue, and the mysterious little girl was better in concept than execution on screen. I feel the same way about the book, although it does expand on the inner life of the 7th Doctor and Ace and, more importantly, gives you a glimpse of the thought process behind the Dalek's behavior. I found the novelization to still be too much scene description, although this novelization does it better than most.

It’s a sad fact of modern life that if you drive long enough, sooner or later you must leave London behind. If you drive north-east up the A12 you eventually come to Colchester, Britain’s first Roman capital and the first city to be burned down by that red-headed chavette from Norfolk known as Boudicca. I knew all this because I’d been reading the Annals of Tacitus as part of my Latin training. He’s surprisingly sympathetic to the revolting Brits, and scathing about the unpreparedness of the Roman generals who thought more of what was agreeable than expedient .

PREFACE FICTION CORE COLLECTION is a curated list of essential and recommended classic and contemporary works of adult fiction either written in or translated to English. Developed by a team of skilled librarians, this list of recom- mended titles will be helpful to all libraries to develop their collection serving general adult readers. This volume is designed to assist with collection development and maintenance, help locate curriculum and programming materi- als, provide helpful purchasing and bibliographic information, and assist in readers’ advisory support. It is drawn from the database of the same name available from EBSCO Information Services, which has an additional two recommendation levels, Lexile measures, and book reviews and articles. What’s in this Edition? This 20th edition of the FICTION CORE COLLECTION emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusion, represent- ing and reflecting a varied community in which many voices can be heard. Our team of librarians has provided a significant review of titles to ensure that older, outdated books have been removed in favor of more relevant recom- mendations. The result is more than 8,100 fiction titles in all genres, as well as short story collections, anthologies, and classics. Also new to this edition is an increased coverage of urban fiction titles. For the first time ever, book records in FICTION CORE COLLECTION will include subject headings. New meta- data includes precise genres and subgenres, and subject headings that consistently include both location and time period where appropriate. Books will be much easier to find through the index, and the metadata associated with each record offers better insight into the contents of the book.

  • Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in Ben Aaronovitch's Urban Fantasy Cycle
Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in Ben Aaronovitch’s Urban Fantasy Cycle Rivers of London Sylwia Borowska-Szerszun, University of Białystok Abstract Drawing on Paul Gilroy’s discussion of postimperial melancholia and conviviality, this article aims to examine Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London as a voice in the discussion on British multiculture. Contextualised through a comparison to a popular culture spectacle and discussed within the theoretical framework of urban fantasy, the narrative is read as consciously challenging the “habits of Whiteness” (Young 2016) of fantasy fiction. The analysis focuses on the diversions from the white-centric paradigm by discussing the construction of the mixed-race protagonist, the juxtaposition of postimperial and convivial attitudes and the use of the fantastic to expose various approaches towards difference. Keywords: Ben Aaronovitch; Rivers of London; urban fantasy; diversity; conviviality; postimperial melancholia. Introduction One of the questions faced by multicultural societies nowadays is how to approach the ethnic and cultural differences that have become their defining feature. According to Paul Gilroy, one reaction may be labelled as “postimperial melancholia”, or “an inability even to face, never mind actually mourn, the profound change in circumstances and moods that followed the end of the Empire and consequent loss of imperial prestige” (Gilroy 2004: 98). Affecting both the native-born British citizens and the newcomers from the territories of the former Empire, it manifests itself as “shock and anxiety that followed from a loss of any sense that the national collective was bound by a coherent and distinctive culture” (Gilroy 2004: 98). Another approach to difference, opposed to postimperial melancholia, is “conviviality”, understood as “the processes of cohabitation and interaction that have made multiculture an ordinary feature of social life in Britain’s urban areas and in postcolonial cities elsewhere” (Gilroy 2004: xi).

Finest DOCTOR WHO Ever! Daleks Like Never Before, Plus the Counter-Measures Team is Born!By Rick CrossOne of the best DOCTOR WHO audio adaptations ever, based on the single best adapted DOCTOR WHO novelization ever! Ben Aaronovitch scores HUGE with this one, getting inside the heads of some of the most interesting one-off DOCTOR WHO characters ever, and showing us the Daleks like we've never experienced them before. Masterful! Highly recommended. An unabridged reading of Ben Aaronovitch's novelisation of his classic 1988 TV adventure featuring the Seventh Doctor. With unfinished business to attend to, the Doctor takes Ace to Coal Hill School in London, 1963. The last time he was here, he left something behind - a powerful Time Lord artifact that could unlock the secrets of time travel. Can the Doctor retrieve the Hand of Omega before two rival factions of Daleks track it down? And even if he can, how will he prevent the whole of London becoming a war zone as the Daleks meet in explosive confrontation? The story is read by Terry Molloy, who played Davros in the original TV serial, with Dalek voices provided by Nicholas Briggs.
