We stayed united with the Unity Table and we have made a huge difference against insurmountable amounts of money. In an attempt at brevity, we will highlight the statewide elections and give you an over-all view of where we are. We should begin at where we started, which was fighting for our lives against big money and a GOP with a 2/3’s majority. The GOP turned their back on law enforcement and took up the cause of our enemies (ALLEC, The Koch Brothers, The Florida Chamber, The National Chamber, The League Of Cities, The Association of Counties, Associated Industries of Florida, The Tea Party). After two years of fighting against them with the UNITY TABLE, we knew that we had to focus our energies and work toward some common goals. 1) Break the 2/3’s majority: We succeeded in both chambers 2) Protect our Court System: We succeeded: The justices were retained and the ballot initiative to give more power to the legislature failed. 3) Protect our state from TABOR: Ballot Initiative 3: We succeeded it failed to pass. 4) Protect our local government tax base: Ballot initiative 4: We succeeded it failed to pass. 5) Support ballot initiatives 2,9, and 11 : We succeeded : They all passed. The Florida Senate The Florida Senate was the only chamber that held fast and stood up for Florida’s citizens instead of corporate greed. There were some heroic Republicans that voted with law enforcement and it was a great cost to them politically. By now everyone knows who these men are, but to say that we had a goal of protecting these Republicans would be an understatement. Of our focused 28 senate races we lost three, and all three were a long shot. We had a success rate of over 85% and have gone a long way towards protecting ourselves from attacks by the legislature. The two most heavily focused senate seats were Senate Seat 14 in Orange County and our candidate Darren Soto won. The other seat was Senate Seat 34 in Palm Beach and Broward County and our candidate Maria Sachs won. Millions of dollars were spent by our opponents on these races, but we have prevailed. We also succeeded in breaking the 2/3’s majority held in the Senate. The Florida House The Florida House of Representatives has been our biggest up-hill battle in defending public safety. We approached these elections with two objectives. One was to break the super majority, which we did. Second was to choose candidates that would stand up for their constituency and not just follow leadership. We did this … regardless of party affiliation. We have been successful, but still have work to do in the House of Representatives. We had right at a 70% success rate in our targeted races and few long shot races that we went all in, and went early…. We had some huge wins, but House Seat 29 was our biggest battle. We endorsed former firefighter Mike Clelland against a designated future Speaker of The House. We went out on a limb, not just because Chris Dorworth was one of our biggest enemies, but because Mike Clelland is a wonderful candidate and a first responder. He is easy to believe in, and he worked hard to take on the establishment. There were numerous attempts to cut back door deals against Mike, but we held strong and loyal. He presently is winning the election and is in a recount. He was up against a million dollars of negative campaigning and has done the FOP and the FPFF proud. We have surpassed our goals. We must stay vigilant and we still have huge battles to fight, but we have come a long way in protecting ourselves. • Republicans Maintain a Majority in 188 Races for Newly Redrawn Florida Legislative and Congressional Districts
Republicans Maintain a Majority in 188 Races for Newly Redrawn Florida Legislative and Congressional Districts by Rheb Harbison Carlton Fields Senior Government Consultant 11.07.2012; 4:00 a.m. Republicans held their grip over both chambers of the Florida Legislature in the first election following the spring 2012 redraw of state’s legislative and congressional district lines. The redistricting exercise occurs every 10 years following the most recent US Census, and when complete requires all 160 members of the Florida Legislature to run for office. The decennial US Census also gave Florida two additional seats in the US House of Representatives, bringing the state’s delegation to 29 members: 27 in the US House of Representatives and two in the US Senate. All of the US House seats were up for election this year. Democrats held onto one of the two US Senate seats with incumbent US Senator Bill Nelson winning decisively over US Representative Connie Mack in Tuesday’s election. Miami Republican Marco Rubio, who was not up for election this year, holds the other US Senate seat. As well, voters decided the fate of 11 proposed amendments to the Florida Constitution at Tuesday’s General Election. All of the proposed amendments were placed on the ballot by the Florida Legislature. ► 2013-2014 Florida Senate Republicans have now controlled Florida’s Senate for over a decade. The Party won 26 seats and fell just one member short of achieving a Republican “Super Majority” with the defeat of incumbent Republican Ellyn Bogdanoff. Super Majority rule essentially means one party completely controls the chamber’s political agenda by controlling the procedural rules of the chamber.
