D. Cornell University 2011 This dissertation, The ‘Bestli’ Outlaw: Wilderness and Exile in Old and Middle English Literature explores the reasons for the survival of the beast-like outlaw, a transgressive figure who highlights tensions in normative definitions of human and natural, which came to represent both the fears and the desires of a people in a state of constant negotiation with the land they inhabited. Although the outlaw’s shelter in the wilderness changed dramatically from the dense and menacing forests of Anglo-Saxon England to the bright, known, and mapped greenwood of the late outlaw romances and ballads, the outlaw remained strongly animalistic, other, and liminal, in strong contrast to premodern notions of what it meant to be human and civilized. I argue that outlaw narratives become particularly popular and poignant at moments of national political and ecological crisis—as they did during the Viking attacks of the Anglo-Saxon period, the epoch of intense natural change following the Norman Conquest, and the beginning of the market revolution at the end of the Middle Ages. Figures like the Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter Hereward, the exiled Marcher lord Fulk Fitz Waryn, and the brutal yet courtly Gamelyn and Robin Hood, represent a lost England imagined as pristine and forested.

Peter Liebregts ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to examine cases and stories about children who grew up in confinement. I will explore the importance of attachment in the cases of children who grew up in captivity, and the socio­emotional aspects of what it means to be human, by analysing their narratives. Through our cultural obsession with these children, we must not forget the trauma they have endured and by listening to their voices we can better understand their trauma and possible ways to heal from it. Firstly, I will be looking at some notable and historical cases of children who grew up in confinement. Through these cases, I explore some of the devastating effects a life of confinement can have on children, such as the trauma and developmental delay it causes. Next, I will analyze two memoirs by kidnap victims: 3,096 Days (2010) by Natascha Kampusch and A Stolen Life: A ​ ​ ​ Memoir (2011) by Jaycee Dugard. I will look at the healing effect of trauma narratives and ​ investigate the fascination of readers with this genre. Lastly, I will analyze two novels about growing up in confinement, Room (2010) by Emma Donoghue and The Boy from the Basement ​ ​ ​ (2006) by Susan Shaw, and explore the reading they can offer as works of fiction.

During the Age of Exploration, the Portuguese discovered a sea route to the Indian Ocean by going around the southern tip of Africa, opening up Asia to direct European trade and domination, thereby economically weakening the Ottomans, who had acted as the middleman between Asia and Europe in the lucrative spice trade. They were further weakened by the inflation resulting from the influx of New World silver into Europe. The Ottoman Empire struggled to keep pace with the development of Europe as it was bombarded by the combined forced of revolutionary liberalism, nationalism, and industrialization. Restriction of personal liberty to choose where to live, and who to associate with, is usually only permitted under criminal law, following legal processes. Mental health legislation also permits restraints on freedom of individuals, subject to legal oversight of the process. Admission into an aged care facility may restrict a person’s liberty, if placed in a locked area which they cannot leave without staff assistance. Laws regulating these procedures should be fair, open to scrutiny, and meeting international standards of law and good practice. In 2015 there were 16,350 Commonwealth funded aged care beds in 263 facilities in WA.

There is a national lack of awareness of the most predominant type of mass murder. This thesis hypothesized that the majority of mass murders in the United States are mass murder familicides. It is further hypothesized that most mass murder familicides are committed by Caucasian men in their 30s and 40s. Data from two sources were used: the USA Today Behind the Bloodshed database, and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR) for the years 2006- 2016. It was also necessary to use supplemental data from media accounts where data was missing or in doubt. Mass murder familicides were tallied from both databases. They were then categorized to determine if mass murder familicide was the most common form of mass murder, testing hypothesis one. Ages and race of offenders were then tallied to determine support for hypothesis two, that most offenders were Caucasian and in their 30s and 40s.
