    Dear Community Partners, “Challenging” seems both an accurate and yet inadequate word to describe the last year as we confronted - as a nation and as a community - a series of crises from public health and economic dislocation to reckonings over racial justice and equity. Through it all, the Union Square Partnership played an important role in seeking to keep residents and businesses informed and connected, guiding them to resources, and working with relevant city agencies to support the district. What started as a COVID response turned to a COVID recovery agenda and by the fall of 2020, we released the #USQNext District Recovery Plan. This plan was aimed at accelerating the resumption of business activity and introducing quality of life improvements to continue the upward trend the neighborhood was enjoying prior to the pandemic. UNION SQUARE-14TH STREET HAS DEMONSTRATED INCREDIBLE RESILIENCE OVER THE PAST YEAR, AND THE DISTRICT IS WELL-POSITIONED TO REBOUND This year’s Annual Report is organized around the five pillars of the recovery plan, including reemphasizing core services like sanitation, beautification, and public safety coordination, bolstering our marketing efforts, and pursuing exciting new projects in the bold District Vision Plan released this past January.     LIST OF NEW YORK’S BASEBALL SITES Major League Stadiums and related sites The New York metropolitan area is the scene of some of the most legendary events and home of the greatest figures in baseball history. From the first recorded baseball game at Elysian Fields in 1846, New York has been the “Capitol of Baseball” for 171 years. New York’s baseball history is written in many places – legendary stadiums, distinctive hotels, ordinary homes. Some of these sites are well-marked and internationally- known – others are marked with small plaques, tiny reminders, or even nothing at all. But every one of these sites listed played a major role in the history of baseball, is worth a visit, and deserves to be known and remembered. Enjoy! 1. Yankee Stadium (161st Street and River Avenue, The Bronx) Accessible by the No. 4, D, and B trains from Manhattan. The new Yankee Stadium, opened in April 2009. Costing $2.3 billion, it stands one block north of the original, on the 24-acre former site of Macombs Dam Park, and incorporates reproductions of many features from the original Yankee Stadium across the street, including the frieze, the Indiana limestone exterior, hand-operated scoreboards, the section numbering, and the unusually-shaped outfield dimensions. New features include a museum of Yankee history that displays Thurman Munson’s locker, a Great Hall on 161st Street, and an accessible Monument Park. It is the oldest and one of the most culturally rich sections of the City. This chapter describes the wealth of structures that have been identified as historically significant. Officially recognized resources include National Historic Landmarks (NHLs), other individual properties and historic districts listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places (S/NR), properties eligible for such listing, New York City Landmarks (NYCLs) and Historic Districts (NYCHDs), and properties calendared for designation as NYCLs. NHLs are nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. All NHLs are included on the National Register, which is the nation’s official list of historic properties worthy of preservation. Historic resources include both standing structures and archaeological resources. Located north of Wall Street and the original Dutch settlement, the streets of the study area were laid out during the English colonial period. The densely developed area that exists today is composed of commercial buildings dating from the 1830s to the late 20th century and ranging from counting houses to small office buildings, and from early skyscrapers to large-scale modern office buildings. A large part of the study area to the west includes much of the Fulton- Nassau Historic District (S/NR-listed), and the study area to the east is located in the South Street Seaport Historic District (NYCHD; S/NR-listed).

    BSL CLASSROOM LOCATION GUIDE ABINGDON SQUARE A BIT OF HISTORY FIRST! Abingdon Square Park is one of New York City's oldest parks, and at 0.25 acres (1,000 m2), one of its smallest. Abingdon Square Park shares its lineage with some of Greenwich Village’s earliest European landowners and social figures. It was named for a prominent eighteenth-century area resident, Charlotte Warren, who married Englishman Willoughby Bertie, the 4th Earl of Abingdon and received the land as a wedding gift from her father. Although most British place names in Manhattan were altered after the Revolutionary War, Abingdon Square retained its name due to the well-known patriotic sympathies of Charlotte and the Earl. The park is today maintained by the Abingdon Square Alliance, a community group that works in cooperation with the Department of Parks & Recreation. The park is still a vibrant center of neighborhood life with their Saturday greenmarket that has been bringing local farmers and purveyors to the West Village since 1994.
