Fairchild Ruggles, Chair Professor Dianne Harris Associate Professor Martin Manalansan Associate Professor Faranak Miraftab Abstract The dissertation explores the intricate relations between landscape, race/ethnicity, and urban economy and politics in American Chinatowns. It focuses on the landscape changes and spatial struggles in the Chinatowns under the forces of urban redevelopment after WWII. As the world has entered into a global era in the second half of the twentieth century, the conditions of Chinatown have significantly changed due to the explosion of information and the blurring of racial and cultural boundaries. One major change has been the new agenda of urban land planning which increasingly prioritizes the rationality of capital accumulation. The different stages of urban redevelopment have in common the deliberate efforts to manipulate the land uses and spatial representations of Chinatown as part of the socio-cultural strategies of urban development. A central thread linking the dissertation’s chapters is the attempt to examine the contingent and often contradictory production and reproduction of socio-spatial forms in Chinatowns when the world is increasingly structured around the dynamics of economic and technological changes with the new forms of global and local activities. Late capitalism has dramatically altered city forms such that a new understanding of the role of ethnicity and race in the making of urban space is required. -

April 16, 2020 Dear Member of Congress: On behalf of the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), the Democracy Initiative, and the undersigned organizations, we are writing to denounce the continued increase in racist attacks and discrimination against the Asian American community, and to express our support for H.Res. 908, introduced by Representative Grace Meng (D-NY-6) and its Senate companion to be introduced by Senators Kamala Harris (D-CA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and Mazie Hirono (D-HI); both of which condemn all forms of anti-Asian sentiment related to COVID- 19. Hate and bigotry are not consistent with realizing the promise of American democracy where all of us have an equal voice. COVID-19 is a public health crisis that has fundamentally disrupted our way of life and is saddling our most vulnerable individuals and communities with significant new burdens. Our collective focus must be on overcoming this challenge and caring for one another. As the number of COVID-19 cases have increased, so too have attacks targeting Asian Americans. On March 14th, the New York Post published an article of a Chinese American father walking his son to the bus stop and was verbally and physically attacked by an angry stranger.1 Just days later in Texas, a Burmese man and his son were stabbed at a local Sam’s Club by a young man who attacked them because of their race.2 As these attacks have continued surging, we are concerned that as our country continues to struggle to overcome COVID-19, anxiety, frustration and fear will intensify before it subsides. -

Cultures Connecting Diversity Calendar 2020-2021 Mission Statement: The purpose of this calendar is to address and support the diversity of students, staff, and families in K-12 education settings and beyond. We recognize that by increasing our understanding of diverse cultures, group experiences, traditions, values and beliefs, we can enhance our relationships with one another and hence, create culturally responsive environments where everyone feels valued and respected. How Dates Were Chosen: Due to the extensive number of cultural holidays, dates for this calendar were determined by the following four criteria: 1) Might a student or staff member be absent as a result of this day? 2) Might a student or staff member be disengaged as a result of this day (e.g., hunger or a negative association with a particular day/date such as Thanksgiving, or a day of remembrance of a tragic event)? 3) Might a student, family, or staff member not be able to participate in a school activity during or after school as a result of this day? (e.g., Many of our students do not participate in Halloween or Valentine’s Day. There are students, families, and staff who cannot participate in district/school events that are scheduled on the evening of an important religious day observed by the Jewish and Muslim communities). 4) Does the day provide an opportunity for a teachable moment regarding ethnic or cultural diversity that might not otherwise be discussed, particularly dates associated with a continued history of oppression, discrimination, or racism? Work in Progress: We ask for your patience in the event that we have missed important dates that apply to the four criteria above. -

Changing family structures of Nepalese transmigrants in Japan: split-households and dual-wage earners KEIKO YAMANAKA Abstract Based on surveys and interviews conducted in Japan and Nepal, this study of Nepalese labour migration to Japan examines the changing patterns of family responses to international migration, the increasing participation of married women in the global labour force, and the implications of these changes for households, communities and the Nepalese economy. The split-household family has long supported sojourning males of Tibeto–Burman linguistic groups as Gurkha soldiers in Indian and British Armies before returning to Nepal upon retirement. As women have increasingly left Nepal to take advantage of overseas employment, a pattern of husband–wife migration has emerged, with children being left in the hands of relatives – the dual-wage earner family. Thus, Nepal has recently witnessed the development of transnational families and individuals whose work, residence and life trajectories extend beyond the nation-state. International migration has been one of several strategies for economic survival among subsistence farming households in Nepal (KC 2004; Seddon et al. 2002; Thieme et al. 2003). For decades, hundreds of thousands of farmers have descended from the Himalayan middle hills to the Indian plains every year to serve as security guards, domestics, manual labourers, low-level public servants, and to join the Indian or British armies as foot soldiers (Dixit 1997). By the late 1980s global capitalism had integrated this Hindu kingdom into the expanding economies of East and Southeast Asia, and by the mid-1990s, into those of the Gulf region (Graner and Gurung 2003; Yamanaka 2000). -

Trieu1 and Hana C. Lee1 Abstract Internalized racial oppression among Asian Americans is currently an understudied topic in the social sciences. In this article, the authors draw from 52 in-depth interviews with 1.5- and 2nd-generation Asian Americans to examine this phenomenon. Although previous studies have examined individuals who engage in, and reproduce, internalized racial oppression from static lenses, the present research shows that individuals can (and do) shift out of perceptions and behaviors that perpetuate internalized racism. This research pinpoints the factors that assist in this fluid process. The findings show that the factors are centrally framed around the theme of critical exposure. In particular, it is the critical exposure to ethnic and racial history, ethnic organizations, and coethnic ties that ultimately leads to the emergence of an empowering critical consciousness, which is the necessary key in diverting Asian Americans away from behaviors that perpetuate internalized racial oppression. DEMOGRAPHIC SNAPSHOT OF SOUTH ASIANS IN THE UNITED STATES April 2019 This factsheet, based primarily on Census 2010 and the 2017 American Community Survey, provides a national snapshot of the South Asian American community. We encourage community leaders, government entities, policymakers, and the media to use this data to better understand South Asian Americans and help inform their engagement with this community. Who are South Asians? The South Asian community in the United States includes individuals who trace their ancestry to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The community also includes members of the South Asian diaspora – past generations of South Asians who originally settled in other parts of the world, including the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, Canada and the Middle East, and other parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Population Numbers at a Glance Below are some key facts about the national population in the United States from Census 2010 data and the 2017 American Community Survey: ➢ Nearly 5.4 million South Asians live in the United States tracing their roots to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the diaspora, including but not limited to Trinidad/Tobago, Guyana, Fiji, Tanzania, and Kenya.1 This is up from 3.5 million counted in Census 2010. ➢ Indians comprise the largest segment of the South Asian community, making up over 80% of the total population, followed by Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Nepali, Sri Lankans, and Bhutanese. ➢ Data is not readily available for diaspora South Asian communities specifically the Indo-Caribbean, and Indo-African communities. Population Growth The South Asian American community grew roughly 40% between 2010 and 2017. -

The Other Asian: Reflections of South Asian Americans in Libraryland Nisha Mody, Lalitha Nataraj, Gayatri Singh, and Aditi Worcester Introduction In 2016, the Association for Research Libraries and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Library hosted the National Diversity in Libraries Conference at the UCLA campus. The conference brought together librarians interested in diversity and social justice issues from around the country, including many librarians of color. At this conference Nisha Mody (NM), a health sciences librarian, met Gayatri Singh (GS), a fellow academic librarian. They kept in touch and sought each other out when the call for proposals was announced for this book. Nisha and Gayatri were particularly interested in exploring the professional and personal experiences central to South Asian American librarians that they felt were not adequately documented in official literature. They in turn reached out to Lalitha Nataraj (LN), a librarian with experience in public and community college libraries, and Aditi Worcester (AW), an archivist who has worked in community and academic special collections and archives. This is how four women of color…four South Asian American librarians…four desis came together to invite you to peek into our insights based upon our individual professional experiences at academic and public libraries and archives. One would assume the unifying theme is the commonality of our experiences, and yet, it took us a while to agree upon a vocabulary that held the same meanings for each of us. For instance, are we Asian or South Asian? South Asian or South Asian American? Does a cultural grouping called South Asian American exist in reality, or is it a convenient way of categorizing people from a geographical region who otherwise have little in common? Because aggregate classifications can be problematic, providing context may help explain why we found these questions particularly complicated to answer. -

Khmer New Year, also known as Cambodian New Year is usually a three day public holiday in Cambodia. In Khmer, it is called “Chaul Chnam Thmey”, which means “enter the new year”. It is based on the traditional solar new year, that was observed in parts of India and Asia. It falls on either 13 April or 14 April. The Khmer new year is marked by the sun entering the sign of Aries the Ram. This particular event was traditionally closely related to the Vernal Equinox. In ancient times, the dates of the sun entering Aries and the Vernal Equinox would have been even closer, but they have shifted due to an effect called procession, where the Earth wobbles on its axis over a 25,000 year period. In Cambodia it marks the end of the harvest before the beginning of the rainy season. How is Khmer New Year Celebrated? Like most New Year holidays, Khmer New Year is full of tradition and rituals. The three days of celebration each have their own name and associated traditions: First Day- Maha Songkran APRIL 2018 CALENDAR The first day of the Khmer New Year is called ‘Maha Songkran’. Similar to the Tamil tradition, it BLACK WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH is believed that this was the day of creation. In Khmer tradition, the world was created by God’s angels and to welcome the angels , people will clean their houses and illuminate them with ARAB AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH candles. -
