Trieu1 and Hana C. Lee1 Abstract Internalized racial oppression among Asian Americans is currently an understudied topic in the social sciences. In this article, the authors draw from 52 in-depth interviews with 1.5- and 2nd-generation Asian Americans to examine this phenomenon. Although previous studies have examined individuals who engage in, and reproduce, internalized racial oppression from static lenses, the present research shows that individuals can (and do) shift out of perceptions and behaviors that perpetuate internalized racism. This research pinpoints the factors that assist in this fluid process. The findings show that the factors are centrally framed around the theme of critical exposure. In particular, it is the critical exposure to ethnic and racial history, ethnic organizations, and coethnic ties that ultimately leads to the emergence of an empowering critical consciousness, which is the necessary key in diverting Asian Americans away from behaviors that perpetuate internalized racial oppression. ABSTRACT Stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in the U.S. Media: Appearance, Disappearance, and Assimilation Yueqin Yang, M.A. Mentor: Douglas R. Ferdon, Jr., Ph.D. This thesis commits to highlighting major stereotypes concerning Asians and Asian Americans found in the U.S. media, the “Yellow Peril,” the perpetual foreigner, the model minority, and problematic representations of gender and sexuality. In the U.S. media, Asians and Asian Americans are greatly underrepresented. Acting roles that are granted to them in television series, films, and shows usually consist of stereotyped characters. It is unacceptable to socialize such stereotypes, for the media play a significant role of education and social networking which help people understand themselves and their relation with others. Within the limited pages of the thesis, I devote to exploring such labels as the “Yellow Peril,” perpetual foreigner, the model minority, the emasculated Asian male and the hyper-sexualized Asian female in the U.S. media. DEMOGRAPHIC SNAPSHOT OF SOUTH ASIANS IN THE UNITED STATES April 2019 This factsheet, based primarily on Census 2010 and the 2017 American Community Survey, provides a national snapshot of the South Asian American community. We encourage community leaders, government entities, policymakers, and the media to use this data to better understand South Asian Americans and help inform their engagement with this community. Who are South Asians? The South Asian community in the United States includes individuals who trace their ancestry to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The community also includes members of the South Asian diaspora – past generations of South Asians who originally settled in other parts of the world, including the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, Canada and the Middle East, and other parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Population Numbers at a Glance Below are some key facts about the national population in the United States from Census 2010 data and the 2017 American Community Survey: ➢ Nearly 5.4 million South Asians live in the United States tracing their roots to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the diaspora, including but not limited to Trinidad/Tobago, Guyana, Fiji, Tanzania, and Kenya.1 This is up from 3.5 million counted in Census 2010. ➢ Indians comprise the largest segment of the South Asian community, making up over 80% of the total population, followed by Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Nepali, Sri Lankans, and Bhutanese. ➢ Data is not readily available for diaspora South Asian communities specifically the Indo-Caribbean, and Indo-African communities. Population Growth The South Asian American community grew roughly 40% between 2010 and 2017. -

The Other Asian: Reflections of South Asian Americans in Libraryland Nisha Mody, Lalitha Nataraj, Gayatri Singh, and Aditi Worcester Introduction In 2016, the Association for Research Libraries and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Library hosted the National Diversity in Libraries Conference at the UCLA campus. The conference brought together librarians interested in diversity and social justice issues from around the country, including many librarians of color. At this conference Nisha Mody (NM), a health sciences librarian, met Gayatri Singh (GS), a fellow academic librarian. They kept in touch and sought each other out when the call for proposals was announced for this book. Nisha and Gayatri were particularly interested in exploring the professional and personal experiences central to South Asian American librarians that they felt were not adequately documented in official literature. They in turn reached out to Lalitha Nataraj (LN), a librarian with experience in public and community college libraries, and Aditi Worcester (AW), an archivist who has worked in community and academic special collections and archives. This is how four women of color…four South Asian American librarians…four desis came together to invite you to peek into our insights based upon our individual professional experiences at academic and public libraries and archives. One would assume the unifying theme is the commonality of our experiences, and yet, it took us a while to agree upon a vocabulary that held the same meanings for each of us. For instance, are we Asian or South Asian? South Asian or South Asian American? Does a cultural grouping called South Asian American exist in reality, or is it a convenient way of categorizing people from a geographical region who otherwise have little in common? Because aggregate classifications can be problematic, providing context may help explain why we found these questions particularly complicated to answer. -

It does so by examining white attitudes towards Latinos in Orange County, California through public discourse analysis of the “Ask a Mexican” column, a survey instrument and a series of in-depth interviews to triangulate whites’ use and logic of racial stereotypes and policy preferences. Orange County is a good testing ground for contemporary Latino racialization because it is a majority minority area, which has a long history of migration from Mexico, with deep racial segregation that reflects racial inequalities between whites and Latinos. While Latinos in the United States as a whole are a heterogeneous group my data demonstrates how the current racialization of Latinos in the United States has a homogenizing effect. Empirically my data maps racial stereotypes whites have had and continue to reference as the Latino population has increased. -

Rice1 New Northeast Consulting Abstract South Asian Americans—like other students of color—experience racial microaggressions in schools, including the model minority myth and the spokesperson phenomenon (McCabe, 2009). This paper discusses these phenomena and relevant research before examining qualitative, retrospective reports from 10 college-aged South Asian Americans who described experiences with racial microaggressions in K-12 settings, selected from a larger source study. These participants’ reports—related to being asked to speak about Indian or South Asian culture or history—are explored in the context of three themes: (a) the positioning of students as spokespersons as an obstacle to learning, (b) the spokesperson phenomenon as a form of racial trauma, and (c) the positioning of a student as a spokesperson as a reflection of an imbalance and misuse of power. This paper offers implications for inviting students to share culture without positioning them as spokespersons. Possible paths for future research into student experiences with this phenomenon are offered.
