Picture-Books Why not stick with alphabetical order? Most people that use picture books either browse the books at random or look up a topic that they want to read about, such as “Trucks” or “Monsters.” We thought “why not make this easier for everyone?” while also introducing books on the topic you already like that you never would have stumbled upon before! And for the those that want a specific book, most people need to use the card catalog anyway, so there are no extra steps! How did you choose the categories? We are not the first library to put picture books into categories, so we researched and used their ideas as a starting point. From there, we decided that “subcategories” would be helpful to keep a library of our size organized. We chose these by separating any of the topics under the category that had more than seven books. You can see how that grew! How exactly did you sort the books? Each book in the Picture Book Section had to be read by one of the librarians in order to determine what the book is about. Sometimes, the cover has a bear on it, but the story is about sharing, so we would put it into the sharing section. What happened when there were two categories the book could go into? Well, we asked ourselves “Where is this more likely to be searched for?” and put it with those books. Believe us, sometimes that was very difficult to decide. Sometimes we even disagreed! What about books with multiple copies? Those we got lucky with and were able to put in two locations. Dinosaurs playing sports? One in “Dinosaurs,” one in “Sports”. But, I just want a Dr. Seuss book. There are a select few authors and illustrators that we kept all together in our “Beloved” section, including Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, and Mo Willems. Has it worked? We have seen the number of picture books checked out go up as well as books that have never gotten much attention get checked out more. We think that is great news! A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.

Abstract Established in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a ubiquitous transmedia sensation. Its uniquely interwoven narrative provides auspicious grounds for scholarly consideration. The franchise conscientiously presents larger-than-life superheroes as complex and incredibly emotional individuals who form profound interpersonal relationships with one another. This thesis explores Sarah Hagelin’s concept of resistant vulnerability, which she defines as a “shared human experience,” as it manifests in the substantial relationships that Steve Rogers (Captain America) cultivates throughout the Captain America narrative (11). This project focuses on Steve’s relationships with the following characters: Agent Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier).

By Lyndsey Erin Shelton Under the mentorship of Dr. Darin H. Van Tassell ABSTRACT It is a widely accepted notion that a child can only be called stupid for so long before they believe it, can only be treated in a particular way for so long before that is the only way that they know. Why is that notion never applied to how we treat, address, and present religion and the religious to children and young adults? In recent years, questions have been continuously brought up about how we portray violence, sexuality, gender, race, and many other issues in popular media directed towards young people, particularly video games.

They have gone from a popular comic book brand, to bankruptcy, to a licenser of products, to an independent film studio, and finally ended up as the latest branch in the super conglomerate Disney. The brand has been a popular topic of study, as the past few years have seen Marvel grow to be the most lucrative franchise in film history. Past studies have either focused on Marvel's trade story and the economic backdrop that led to such success, or the cultural elements of the films such as plot and theme. In this paper, I want to construct a fusion of these two narratives while taking a close at Marvels past and present. While fusing the cultural and economic elements of the Marvel brand, I have discovered a distinct new paradigm of production and storytelling that will change the relationship consumers have to franchises.
