Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] FORMER MUSIC DIRECTOR ZUBIN MEHTA TO RETURN TO NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC RAVI SHANKAR’s Rāgā-Mālā Concerto No. 2, for Sitar and Orchestra With ANOUSHKA SHANKAR as Soloist SCHUBERT’s Symphony in C major, Great November 3–5, 2016 Former Music Director Zubin Mehta will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct Schubert’s Symphony in C major, Great, and Ravi Shankar’s Rāgā-Mālā Concerto No. 2, for Sitar and Orchestra, with soloist Anoushka Shankar, the composer’s daughter, in her Philharmonic debut. The program will take place Thursday, November 3, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 4 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 5 at 8:00 p.m. The Philharmonic commissioned and premiered Shankar’s Rāgā-Mālā Concerto No. 2, for Sitar and Orchestra, in April 1981, with the composer as soloist in his Philharmonic debut and led by then Music Director Zubin Mehta, to whom the work is dedicated. Rāgā-Mālā translates to “Garland of Ragas”; in Indian classical music, a raga is a mode, of which there are more than 300. Zubin Mehta and Ravi Shankar discussed the work in 1981 in Ovation magazine. Mr. Mehta said that although he had not previously believed that Western orchestras could play Indian music, “Ravi worked individually with our solo players in every section, to help him not only to know each musician but the characteristic of his instrument. … I feel at the moment that it will work.” Shankar said: “For many years I have been dreaming of playing with the Maestro from Bombay. -

Western Classical Music in Mumbai: Global Music, Local Meanings Hannah Marsden Thesis submitted for the degree of PhD in Ethnomusicology Department of Music Royal Holloway University of London June 2018 1 Declaration of Authorship I, Hannah Marsden, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Hannah Marsden 6th July 2018 2 Abstract This thesis is an ethnographic and historical investigation into the roles and meanings of Western classical music Mumbai and Goa, India. My core argument is that the values and ideologies held by those involved in Western classical musicking in Mumbai do not always correspond with local values and ideologies prevalent in the city. Tensions are thus created, as a transnational music historically rooted in European high art cultures meets local values in a post- colonial site. Chapters one and two present a historical account of Western classical music in Mumbai. Drawing on extensive archival research as well as on oral histories, I outline how Western classical music was established in the city, and what it meant to the communities involved in it. The rest of the thesis is based on ethnographic fieldwork undertaken in Mumbai in 2014 and 2015. In chapter three I take three case studies, a local music competition, an amateur orchestra and a Catholic choir, to explore various ways in which Western classical music can be employed as signifier of, and can participate in the construction of, multi-layered and nuanced identities. I show how practitioners of Western classical music in Mumbai are subject to questioning from within the locale and from international audiences regarding their identities as Indian Western classical musicians. -

1 Reviving Walter Walter Kaufmann Was Among the Hundreds Of
Old Bombay Back in Reviving Walter Walter Kaufmann was among the hundreds of composers whose careers were compromised and their music forgotten once they had fled Nazi-occupied Europe. Canada’s ARC Ensemble––Artists of the Royal Conservatory––and Simon Wynberg its Artistic Director, are dedicated to the exploration and recovery of this lost repertoire. For the last 85 years, All India Radio (AIR) has begun the broadcast day with a sinuous violin melody accompanied by the buzzing drone of the tanpura. The melody, familiar to tens of millions, has come to represent the very essence of India, evocative and nostalgic in the way of a familiar hymn or national anthem. This, while the very same fourteen notes are catalyzing nostalgia for the next generation of Indians. That AIR’s signature tune, based on the Shivarenjani raga, is the work of a 27-year-old Jewish composer from the Sudetenland, rather than a home-grown Indian, always comes as something of a surprise. I find this less surprising than the fact that it is the only Kaufmann melody that anyone knows. Mehli Mehta, the violinist who recorded the AIR theme, later emigrated to Los Angeles and became a distinguished music-educator. His son is the celebrated conductor Zubin Mehta and when we spoke in October 2017, he had clear childhood memories of Kaufmann. He contrasted his work and his reverence for Indian music with the 200 years of arrogance and indifference exhibited by his British colleagues. In one of a number of curious coincidences related to my Kaufmann research, Zubin’s son Mervon is a colleague of mine at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. -
