Biographical Note Dr. John (Jack) William Larner, Jr. was born on April 20, 1938 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His parents were John William Larner, Sr. (1897-1978) and Emily Josephine Dugan Larner. From 1944 to 1952, John W. Larner, Jr. attended St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic School in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. In 1952-1953, he attended Mellon Junior High School for ninth grade. Larner attended Mt. Lebanon High School from 1953 to 1956, and graduated from high school in 1956.

In 1960, Larner graduated from Rice Institute (Rice University) with a BA in History. In 1962, he was granted an MA in History from the University of Pittsburgh and accepted a teaching fellowship to pursue a history Ph.D. at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In 1963, he took a leave from the University of Alberta to accept the post of Instructor of History at the Altoona Campus of the Pennsylvania State University. In 1964, Larner taught world and Canadian history in summer session at the University of Alberta.

In 1965, Larner took a leave from Penn State-Altoona to begin PhD studies anew at West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia. In 1967, he passed PhD history qualifying exams at West Virginia University and accepted a position as Instructor of History at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, teaching upper division Canadian, US, and Canadian-US comparative history. In 1968, Larner returned to teach summer session at the University of Alberta; this time only Canadian history. In 1970, he departed Memorial University of Newfoundland, taking a public school teaching job in German and History at the Clear Creek Independent School District, League City (Space Center near Houston), Texas. In 1971, he was appointed Aboriginal Treaty Rights Research Coordinator, Indian Association of Alberta, working from the Stony (Assiniboine) Reservation at Morley, Alberta, west of Calgary. In 1971, he was appointed Director of Aboriginal Treaty Rights Research by Canada’s National Indian Brotherhood, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, working especially on completion of Stony claims case, cases evolving from as yet non-treaty areas in the Northwest Territories, and in a variety of other cases. A major duty was to write a pamphlet on Canadian Indian Status and Claims to be distributed by National Indian Brotherhood representatives to the United Nation’s Fourth World Conference, Stockholm, Sweden in summer of 1973.

Larner graduated with a PhD in History from West Virginia University in 1972. In 1972, he departed Canada’s National Indian Brotherhood, taking a public school teaching post at the Klein Independent School District in northwest Harris County, Texas, where he taught, US History, US and Texas Government, International Relations, Sociology, and Geography. Additionally, he served as Social Studies Department Chair and for one year as the District-Wide Social Studies Coordinator. Also, taught part-time evening courses for Houston Community College and North Harris County Community College.

In 1973, Larner was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, sponsored by the United States National Archives and the University’s Center for Textual and Editorial Studies in Humanistic Sources. In 1978, under a grant from the National Archives’ National Historical Publications and Records Commission, took leave from Klein Independent School District to commence work on The Papers of Carlos Montezuma, M.D. at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. In 1979, Larner returned to teaching at Klein Independent School District with the National Historical and Publications grant transferred there toward completion of the Montezuma Papers project. Continued part-time evening teaching at North Harris County Community College. In 1982, he departed the Klein Independent School District, returning to Altoona, Pennsylvania, teaching part-time at Penn State-Altoona and substitute teaching in local public school. Also, he continued work toward completion of the Montezuma Papers project which was published by Scholarly Resources, Inc., Wilmington, Delaware in 1984. In 1982, he served as Project Director for the American Historical Association’s Constitutional History in the Schools project, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Washington, D.C. In 1984, while continuing to work with the American Historical Association project, took a Visiting Associate Professor position in the Department of Learning and Instruction, State University of New York at Buffalo.

In 1985, Larner returned to teaching history at Penn State-Altoona, becoming Assistant Professor of History in 1986. Received another National Historical Publications and Records Commission grant for The Papers of the Society of American Indians published by Scholarly Resources, Inc., Wilmington, Delaware in 1987. Under grants from Penn State, the American Philosophical Society and the Forest History Society began work on The Papers of Joseph Trimble Rothrock, M.D, an internationally known Pennsylvania forester. In 1989, he departed Penn State-Altoona, to accept a position as Associate Professor of History and Coordinator of Secondary Social Studies Teacher Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Under continuing grants, including a major one from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the Rothrock papers were published by Scholarly Resources, Inc., Wilmington, Delaware, in 2000.

In 1994, Larner was President of the Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies; later, chairing a committee in the National Council for the Social Studies House of Delegates, 1995-1997. The annual Friends of the Oklahoma Council for the Social Studies Award was presented to Larner in 1996 in recognition of his leadership in bringing IUP Social Studies students, the Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies, and the National Council for the Social Studies to the aid of Oklahoma Social Studies teachers in the aftermath of the bombing of the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City the previous April.

In 2000, Larner retired from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, after 11 years of service and became Professor Emeritus, and received the History Department’s Career Service Award. While working for IUP from 1989-2000, the Larner family lived in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and Larner commuted the fifty miles to Indiana, Pennsylvania. In 2003, Larner researched and published West Virginia Penitentiary Cell Wall Markings. Moundsville, WV: Moundsville Economic Development Council, 2003. Development Council, 2004. In 2006, he and his wife left Pennsylvania, and moved to Richards, Texas. In July 2009, the Larner family returned to Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Scope and Content Note The collection was donated to IUP Special Collections and University Archives by Dr. John W. Larner, Jr. in November 2008. This collection includes correspondence, teaching materials, newspaper articles, publications, and humor. Larner donated 29 reels of microfilm of the Papers of Joseph Trimble Rothrock, MD (1839-1922), which he wrote a research guide for which was published by Scholarly Resources, Inc. in 2001. The microfilm collection was donated to the Serials Department at the IUP Libraries.

Dr. Larner also donated materials to the following collection housed in the IUP Special Collections and University Archives MG 88: Pennsylvania Council of the Social Studies (PCSS) Series IV boxes 4-15.

Series I Correspondence Part 1 Chronologically Arranged NOTE: Correspondence, while mainly found in this series, is also located in virtually all other series of this collection. Generally, but not always, series and folder descriptions in this guide will indicate the presence of correspondence. Files related to publications, presentations, Manuscript Group 146 5 conference work, etc. are especially rich with related correspondence. See especially files within Series XIV, Part 3, Research Topics.

Correspondence is arranged chronologically for the most part. The main exceptions are for 1977- 1983 where all correspondence files for that period are arranged alphabetically (Part 2) and the final group of letters, correspondence files arranged alphabetically by names of organizations or persons (Part 3). Among the letters will be greeting cards. Note how politically incorrect most were during the 1950‘s and bulk of the 1960‘s. Below are lists of names appearing as senders or recipients in each folder; but, only when their identities are not made known fully in letterheads or signature blocks. For many years, outbound correspondence is not indexed, as no carbons were made. For the years up to about 1960 the only outbound to appear is that received and saved by JWL’s parents. There are some outbound copies in later years, carbons, photocopies, and e-mail print-outs. Sometime in the early 1970’s JWL’s parents moved to Texas to life just a few blocks from JWL and his family. Correspondence with them will cease. JWL’s mother died in 1976 and his father passed away in 1978. Note: While Series I is the correspondence mother lode, letters are to be found in other series as indicated below in the various series descriptions. These letters relate to JWL’s being at the Boy Scouts of America’s third national jamboree (national encampment) at Irvine Ranch, California. Today the ranch is gone and the land is suburban. 2. She was born and raised in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. b. Aunt Mamie -- Mary (Dugan) Bittner, my aunt, and Mom’s oldest sister. the University of Wyoming at Laramie for an annual meeting of the Boy Scout honorary society, the Order of the Arrow. JWL was the only member of the Pittsburgh lodge to attend. 3. Except for the first item, this is correspondence home from JWL’s first semester at The Rice Institute (now university) in Houston, Texas. At that time, Rice charged no tuition and usually graduated fewer than 400 per year. He struggled to stay alive amidst all those high power folks. Note the drawings of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s famed “Columbian” with one of the only “strata-dome” cars to operate east of the Mississippi; the other four also were on the B&O. Aldrich, Michele -- Post-doctoral colleague, Institute for the Editing of Historical Documents, University of Virginia and National Historical and Publications Commission of the U.S. National Archives and for years the archivist at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She later edited Isis, the history of science journal. Some items from her husband, Mark, may be included. He is an economics professor at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts and is noted for his books on railroad safety issues. 7. American Historical Association 8. Barns, William D. -- JWL’s beloved doctoral advisor at West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia. Included is correspondence with his wife, Dorothea Clayton Barns. 9. Birkner, Michael J. -- For a time the editor of Pennsylvania History, the journal of the Pennsylvania Historical Association. JWL, for a brief period, prepared its “News and Notes” column. 10. Bott, Jerold Richard -- Former JWL student, Klein High School, Klein, Texas. Jerry’s death about two years following high school was a major emotional set-back for a number of us. Folder contains items related to Jerry’s funeral and the eulogy read by JWL. Also, it includes Jerry’s remarkable poetry. 11. Bott, Lawrence J. -- JWL’s cousin and Godfather. He lived first in Pittsburgh, then after World War II in Houston, and retired to Tyler, Texas. 12. Bott, Lawrence J. -- WWII and immediate post-war correspondence from JWL’s father. 13. Buseman, Bill -- JWL’s beloved and greatly missed brother-in-law, Morgantown, West Virginia. 14. Carter, George -- Carter, George and Betty Tonsing-- Former Director, Minority Studies Institute, University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and now retired and living in Indiana. 15. Dawson, Harry A. -- Beloved older friend and hero. Harry was the camp ranger for Guyasuta Reservation operated by Allegheny Council, BSA, and also the lodge lay advisor for Order of the Arrow Kuwewanik Lodge with which JWL and his father were very active. Mixed items here: staff schedules from Guyasuta in the late 1950’s, a few letters, items commemorating Harry at the time of his funeral, and a kind condolence card to JWL from Rev. Frank E. Coho, Jr. a fellow staff member and life-long dear friend. 16. Detwiler, Donald D. -- German history professor at West Virginia University. He stayed only two or three years and moved to Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois. Manuscript Group 146 55

17. Frantz, John B. -- History professor, Penn State-University Park. He was JWL’s supervisor and evaluator when he was at Penn State-Altoona. John was for years a board member and officer of Pennsylvania Historical Association with which JWL was active. 18. Kehl, James A. -- History professor at University of Pittsburgh who served on JWL’s MA thesis committee. JWL, largely via Pennsylvania Historical Association activities, kept in touch for some years with Dr. Kehl. 19. Laird, David H. Indiana (Pennsylvania) Schools -- Despite abundant and serious warnings from his predecessor, Joe Mastro, JWL attempted to work with Indiana social studies teachers. With most, it was a disaster from the outset and resulted in prompt cessation of any further effort. Worse yet, these teachers influenced teachers of JWL’s daughter to be arbitrary and downright hostile to her. This resulted in the family’s return to Altoona after only two years’ residence in Indiana. This file tells most of the story; see other files in this group that pertain to specific Indiana teachers. 20. Recommendations -- Reference letters JWL provided on behalf of his students from 1969 to 2000. 21. Schillings Dennis -- History teacher from Chicago area and panelist on the American Historical Associations NEH-funded Constitutional History in the Schools project. Via the National Council for the Social Studies, where Denny was a board member and officer, he and JWL worked together for some time following their AHA activities. 22. Selective Service System, Local Board 10, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. -- Yes, JWL had his draft board’s permission to spend time in Canada! 23. Stager, Sister John Mary -- This is largely correspondence with nuns at the Baden, Pennsylvania mother house of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the nuns who taught JWL at St. Bernard’s School, Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania 1944-1953. One letter is from his seventh and eighth science teacher, Sister Mary Gabriel. As president of the Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies, JWL wrote his first editorial in its journal as a memorial to the recently deceased Sister John Mary, his seventh and eighth government teacher and a model for social studies teachers everywhere. A copy is included. 24. Western Pennsylvania Historical Society, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 25. Zeiler, Richard -- Former JWL student, Penn State-Altoona. Rich died in a car wreck during spring break. We all were overwhelmed with deep sadness and all traveled from University Park and Altoona to his Pittsburgh funeral. JWL became very close to Rich’s parents, visiting them off and on for several years. They had already lost a younger son to suicide and had become active in the Pittsburgh chapter of the organization for bereaved parents that Barbara and George H.W. Bush had organized in Odessa, Texas. Includes letter from Barbara Bush.
