Outside the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, Grant is well-known to Batman fans following a lengthy run on various incarnations of the title. More recently he has adapted Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novels Kidnapped and Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde in Graphic Novel format with artist Cam Kennedy. His television work includes scripts for the BBC series Ace Lightning and the Carnival of Doom. ARTISTS As co-creator of Judge Dredd Carlos Ezquerra designed the classic original costume as well as visually conceptualising Mega-City One. He also co-created Strontium Dog. He has illustrated A.B.C. Warriors, Judge Anderson, Tharg the Mighty, Al’s Baby and Cursed Earth Koburn amongst many others. Outside of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, Ezquerra first illustrated Third World War in Crisis magazine, and has since become a regular collaborator with Garth Ennis, working on Adventures in the Rifle Brigade, Bloody Mary, Just a Pilgrim, Condors and The Magnificent Kevin. He also pencilled two special Preacher episodes. Trevor Hairsine’s muscular pencils first wowed 2000 AD readers on Strontium Dogs; he has since co-created Harmony and illustrated Downlode Tales, Judge Anderson, Judge Dredd, Mercy Heights, Missionary Man, One-Offs and Pulp Sci-Fi. Hairsine went on to pencil the first three issues of Com.X’s Cla$$war, and has also pencilled issues of Captain America and Ultimate Six for Marvel Comics. Boo Cook’s 2000 AD debut came some years before he was to provide pencils for the comic proper – as a young man, he sent a fan sketch in to the letters page! Thankfully he continued to hone his art, working on a number of Future Shocks before landing a guest spot on the fan-favourite A.B.C. Warriors series. Cook’s facility with huge crowd scenes and alien designs has quickly established him as a talent to watch, and led to three co-created series including Asylum, Dead Men Walking, Harry Kipling (Deceased). Having illustrated four Judge Anderson series for the Judge Dredd Megazine, Cook is enjoying great success working on Image Comics’ Elephantmen. Patrick Goddard’s clean art style has graced many strips in the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic. Co-creator of the Megazine series Wardog, he has penciled Judge Dredd, Mean Machine, Middenface McNulty, Sinister Dexter and took over the art duties on Savage from Charlie Adlard. • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

  • The Graphic Novel and the Age of Transition: a Survey and Analysis
The Graphic Novel and the Age of Transition: A Survey and Analysis STEPHEN E. TABACHNICK University of Memphis OWING TO A LARGE NUMBER of excellent adaptations, it is now possible to read and to teach a good deal ot the Transition period litera- ture with the aid of graphic, or comic book, novels. The graphic novei is an extended comic book, written by adults for adults, which treats important content in a serious artistic way and makes use of high- quality paper and production techniques not available to the creators of the Sunday comics and traditional comic books. This flourishing new genre can be traced to Belgian artist Frans Masereel's wordless wood- cut novel. Passionate Journey (1919), but the form really took off in the 1960s and 1970s when creators in a number of countries began to employ both words and pictures. Despite the fictional implication of graphic "novel," the genre does not limit itself to fiction and includes numerous works of autobiography, biography, travel, history, reportage and even poetry, including a brilliant parody of T. S. Eliot's Waste Land by Martin Rowson (New York: Harper and Row, 1990) which perfectly captures the spirit of the original. However, most of the adaptations of 1880-1920 British literature that have been published to date (and of which I am aware) have been limited to fiction, and because of space considerations, only some of them can be examined bere. In addition to works now in print, I will include a few out-of-print graphic novel adap- tations of 1880-1920 literature hecause they are particularly interest- ing and hopefully may return to print one day, since graphic novels, like traditional comics, go in and out of print with alarming frequency.
