Abstract Objective: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is described as a cluster of abnormalities that confers an increased risk of de- veloping atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases and also type 2 diabetes mellitus. MS is now considered a global epidemic; with current estimates revealing that about 20-30% of the adult population worldwide is affected by this syndrome. The purpose of the present study was to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome related disorders in women of rural Bangladesh. Methods: In the present study, a total of 1485 apparently healthy rural Bangladeshi women aged ≥15 years were studied using a population based cross-sectional survey according to the World Health Organization’s STEPS approach (modified). The prevalence of MS was estimated using NCEP ATP III, modified NCEP ATP III and IDF criteria. Results: The prevalence rates of MS were 25.05% (NCEP ATP III), 35.56% (modified NCEP ATP III), and 17.51% (IDF), as revealed by the present study. Furthermore, 10.03% had excess waist circumference, 29.43% had elevated blood pressure, 30.57% had elevated fasting plasma glucose level, 85.05% had low HDL values and 26.87% had increased triglyceride values.

    Dropout at Tertiary Education in Bangladesh: Configurations and Determinants BM Sajjad Hossain* [email protected] Abstract The present education system in Bangladesh may be broadly divided into three major stages- primary, secondary and tertiary education. For the last few years, primary school enrollment is about hundred percent ensured which is an outstanding achievement among the underdeveloped countries in the world as well as in the South Asian countries. However, more or less, still dropout is present in every education stages. A few years back the dropout rate was noteworthy, luckily with proper care, government of Bangladesh has succeeded to minimize the rate at primary and secondary education except the tertiary level. This study attempts to explore the reasons of dropout of students from tertiary level. It tries to confirm the prevailing views about the main reasons for dropout as being poverty and related factors. There is also unanimity about higher dropout of the girl students in the rural areas in Bangladesh, confirming prevailing views about early marriage of girls, sexual harassment and illegal pregnancy, household role of girls in life, and lack of recognition for the need for their education etc. Additionally dropout of the male students happens mainly for the failure in examination; besides home-sickness, economic inability to perform academic tasks, brain drain, students’ politics, and drug addiction etc. Data is taken from both primary and secondary sources. Both the public and private university records are analyzed to represent the clear picture by simple tables related to the dropout students and education system. The higher or tertiary education is contributing a significant role to a country’s overall socio-economic progress through the professional and intellectual development of the young people.

Dr. S.M. Zabed Ahmed Supervisor Abstract There have been many research studies conducted on webometrics, especially on the impact of websites and the web impact factor. This current research analyzes the private university websites in Bangladesh according to some common webometrics indicators. It examines and explores 54 private university websites in Bangladesh and identifies the number of web pages and link pages, and calculates their Simple Web Impact Factor, Self-link Web Impact Factor and External link Web Impact Factor. The results indicate that some private universities have relatively high number of web pages, but correspondingly their link pages are low in number and the websites fall behind in their simple, self-link and external link web impact factors. It is also found that the external link web pages provide more than other link pages.
