Film-Philosophy, 13.1 April 2009 New York Film Festival 2008 Part II: Of Now, Passion, and the ‘We’ Martha P. Nochimson Associate Editor, Cineaste The films discussed here in Part II, each in its own way, play with the possibility that the ‘I’ may be a fiction, or simply a bundle of futile immediate desires that is - in basic ways that the individual tends to understand but dimly if at all - severely constrained by the continuities and systems of the ‘we’, of either the family, the community and society as a whole. Ironically, the more the viability of the discreet individual self is challenged by these films, the more each individual in them emerges in his or her fragile radiance and complexity. Like our Northwest Film & Video Festival, which celebrates the unique visions of artists in our community, PIFF seeks to engage, educate, entertain and challenge. We invite you to explore and celebrate not only the art of film, but also the world around you. It is said that film is a universal language—able to transcend geographic, political and cultural boundaries in a singular fashion. In the spirit of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous observation, “There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler who is foreign,” this year’s films allow us to discover what unites rather than what divides. The Festival also unites our community, bringing together culturally diverse audiences, a remarkable cross-section of cinematic voices, public and private funders of the arts, corporate sponsors and global film industry members. This fabulous ecology makes the event possible, and we wish our credits at the back of the program could better convey our deep appreci- ation of all who help make the Festival happen. -

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone. -
Camerimage W Łodzi
Camerimage w Łodzi Teatr Wielki w Łodzi – festiwalowe centrum fot. Paweł Herzog W 2000 roku Fundacja Tumult przeniosła Międzynarodowy Festiwal Sztuki Autorów Zdjęć Filmowych CAMERIMAGE do Łodzi. 11 vacat 12 2000 2 – 9 grudnia Filmy konkursowe oceniało jury w składzie: Michael Cimino (przewodniczący), Peter Suschitzky, Yorgos Arvanitis, Mahmoud Kalari, Wolfgang Treu, Alex Thomson, Paul Sarossy, Jacek Petrycki.
