Screen Nsw Announces Two Aurora Script Development Projects SCREEN NSW ANNOUNCES TWO AURORA SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS Aurora, Screen NSW’s intensive script development program, has selected two projects for 2013‐14. This year’s Aurora format differs from previous years. In place of the week‐long workshop, the two projects have been selected for intensive one‐on‐one development support from a world‐class mentor, in a process specifically tailored to the projects’ needs. The two feature projects and their teams are: BABYTEETH, a bittersweet comedy about how good it is not to be dead yet and how far we will go for love, written by Rita Kalnejais and produced by Academy Award®‐nominated producer Jan Chapman, Katherine Slattery and Alex White. The mentor for Babyteeth is Andrew Bovell. Andrew’s most recent film is the feature adaptation of the John Le Carre novel A Most Wanted Man for director Anton Corbijn, due for release in 2014. The film stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams and Robin Wright. Other film credits include Edge of Darkness starring Mel Gibson, Blessed (Winner of Best Screenplay at San Sebastian Film Festival), the multi‐award winning Lantana, directed by Ray Lawrence, Head On, directed by Ana Kokkinos and Strictly Ballroom directed by Baz Lurhmann. Andrew’s most recent play is The Secret River adapted from Kate Grenville’s novel which premiered at the Sydney Theatre in 2013. BIRDBRAIN, about a man’s whose obsessive addiction to birdwatching almost destroys his family, by writer Stephen Abbott, director Warren Coleman and producer Amanda Higgs (The Secret Life of Us). The mentor for Birdbrain is John Collee, creative director in charge of script development at Hopscotch Features. John’s screenwriting credits include the Oscar‐nominated Master and Commander written with director Peter Weir (2003) and the Oscar‐winning Happy Feet written with George Miller, Warren Coleman and Judy Morris (2006). His film Creation about the domestic life of Charles Darwin opened the Toronto Film Festival in 2009 and his $85M children’s animation based on the BBC’s Walking With Dinosaurs will be released over Christmas this year. Wolf Totem, set during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, is currently filming in Mongolia with Jean Jacques Annaud co‐writing and directing. Some of the successes of the Aurora program over the past decade have included the films Animal Kingdom, Somersault, Wish You Were Here and Little Fish. In 2014‐15, Aurora will once again be offered as a workshop for up to four teams. Aurora is presented with the support of Screen Australia and the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS). AUSTRALIAN FILMS: The Rage in Placid Lake Just out of prep school -- where he was the target of tyrannical bullies -- misfit teen Placid Lake (Ben Lee) yearns to be a regular Joe. When a mishap lands Placid in a body cast for months, he formulates a plan to reinvent himself by donning a suit and taking a job as a drone at an insurance agency. But he soon discovers that conformity isn't what it's cracked up to be in this offbeat Aussie comedy from rookie director Tony McNamara. Strictly Ballroom This quirky, tenderly hilarious romantic comedy is sure to leave you tapping your toes. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, Strictly Ballroom is the off-beat story of a championship ballroom dancer (Paul Mercurio) who breaks all the rules by choosing an ugly duckling dancing partner (Tara Morice). Sweet, funny and original, this is one you won't forget quickly. The Castle When plans for an airport expansion threaten the home of Darryl Kerrigan (Michael Caton) and his family, the patriarch refuses to move from his "castle" -- in actuality, a shabby suburban tract house. Darryl rallies the troops and takes his battle to the highest court in Australia. This irreverent, warm-hearted comedy is frequently compared to The Full Monty. The Dish July 1969. Neil Armstrong is about to walk on the moon, and everyone's eyes are riveted to their TV screens. In Parkes, Australia, a radio dish antenna is slated to receive Apollo 11's video feed and send that historic sight out to the world … that is, if the Australian staff (including pipe-smoking, absent-minded scientist Sam Neill) and their NASA supervisor (the tense, by-the-book Patrick Warburton) don't make any mistakes! Rabbit Proof Fence Australia's aboriginal integration program of the 1930s broke countless hearts -- among them, those of young Molly (Evelyn Sampi), Gracie (Laura Monaghan) and Daisy (Tiana Sansbury), who were torn from their families and placed in an abusive orphanage.

  • A Dark New World : Anatomy of Australian Horror Films
A dark new world: Anatomy of Australian horror films Mark David Ryan Faculty of Creative Industries, Queensland University of Technology A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the degree Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), December 2008 The Films (from top left to right): Undead (2003); Cut (2000); Wolf Creek (2005); Rogue (2007); Storm Warning (2006); Black Water (2007); Demons Among Us (2006); Gabriel (2007); Feed (2005). ii KEY WORDS Australian horror films; horror films; horror genre; movie genres; globalisation of film production; internationalisation; Australian film industry; independent film; fan culture iii ABSTRACT After experimental beginnings in the 1970s, a commercial push in the 1980s, and an underground existence in the 1990s, from 2000 to 2007 contemporary Australian horror production has experienced a period of strong growth and relative commercial success unequalled throughout the past three decades of Australian film history. This study explores the rise of contemporary Australian horror production: emerging production and distribution models; the films produced; and the industrial, market and technological forces driving production. Australian horror production is a vibrant production sector comprising mainstream and underground spheres of production. Mainstream horror production is an independent, internationally oriented production sector on the margins of the Australian film industry producing titles such as Wolf Creek (2005) and Rogue (2007), while underground production is a fan-based, indie filmmaking subculture, producing credit-card films such as I know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer (2006) and The Killbillies (2002). Overlap between these spheres of production, results in ‘high-end indie’ films such as Undead (2003) and Gabriel (2007) emerging from the underground but crossing over into the mainstream.

Dissertation presented to the Faculty of Arts of the University of Glasgow in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Glasgow March 1996 Page 2 Abstract Academic work on Aboriginality in popular media has, understandably, been largely written in defensive registers. Aware of horrendous histories of Aboriginal murder, dispossession and pitying understanding at the hands of settlers, writers are worried about the effects of raced representation; and are always concerned to identify those texts which might be labelled racist. In order to make such a search meaningful, though, it is necessary to take as axiomatic certain propositions about the functioning of films: that they 'mean' in particular and stable ways, for example; and that sophisticated reading strategies can fully account for the possible ways a film interacts with audiences.
