Name ________________________ Gnomon Sundials – Student Worksheet GNOMON (shadow maker) Time read at point of shadow Arab philosophers of 9th and 10th centuries were amongst the first advanced scientists and mathematicians in Europe. They discovered that using a gnomon, a triangular shadow maker, would indicate hours of exactly the same length of standard time, no matter what time of year it was. Sundials were often ornate and had mottos such as: • Tempus fugit (Time flies – Latin) • Let others tell of storms and showers. I only tell of sunny hours (Anon) To prepare your gnomon Fold a sheet of paper in half. The fold will be the top of the gnomon and will be used to reinforce it. Lafferty 2010 The Edictum Theoderici: A Study of a Roman Legal Document from Ostrogothic Italy Sean D.W. Lafferty Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2010 Abstract This is a study of a Roman legal document of unknown date and debated origin conventionally known as the Edictum Theoderici (ET). Comprised of 154 edicta, or provisions, in addition to a prologue and epilogue, the ET is a significant but largely overlooked document for understanding the institutions of Roman law, legal administration and society in the West from the fourth to early sixth century. The purpose is to situate the text within its proper historical and legal context, to understand better the processes involved in the creation of new law in the post-Roman world, as well as to appreciate how the various social, political and cultural changes associated with the end of the classical world and the beginning of the Middle Ages manifested themselves in the domain of Roman law. It is argued here that the ET was produced by a group of unknown Roman jurisprudents working under the instructions of the Ostrogothic king Theoderic the Great (493-526), and was intended as a guide for settling disputes between the Roman and Ostrogothic inhabitants of Italy. A study of its contents in relation to earlier Roman law and legal custom preserved in imperial decrees and juristic commentaries offers a revealing glimpse into how, and to what extent, Roman law survived and evolved in Italy following the decline and eventual collapse of imperial authority in the region. -

To Jerusalem and Back Again: Objects of the Crusades Information for teachers This education pack has been created by the Museum of the Order of St John in partnership with the University of Birmingham to provide Key Stage 3 History teachers with a lesson plan and resources to exploreChristendom, the importance of religion and the Crusades through object-based learning using real objects from the Museum’s collection. ¹ The pack draws extensively on new research undertaken as part of theBearers of the Cross: Material Religion in the Crusading World, 1095–c.1300 project, which was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Led by Dr William Purkis (University of Birmingham), Bearers of the Cross explored the lived, material religion of crusaders through a wide-ranging analysis of texts, art, architecture and material culture associated with the medieval crusading movement. The project has shed new light on the devotional worlds that crusaders inhabited, examining the ritual practices they observed, the religious artefacts they treasured, and the sacred spaces they shaped and were shaped by. Central to this work was a fresh study of the medieval collections of the Museum of the Order of St John. How to use this resource The resource includes a full lesson plan and three activities, as well as full notes to accompany the presentation and tasks. The presentation notes correspond with the PowerPoint presentation slides and the activity instructions are highlighted in blue at the relevant stage of the presentation. There are also lots of opportunities to ask further questions and encourage group discussion, and secondary research for teachers’ information is shown in green. -

John Chrysostom, Maruthas and Christian Evangelism in Sasanian Iran Wa ll STEVENSON, Richmond, Virginia Neither John Chrysostom's efforts to evangeli ze in Sasanid Persia nor the conflict fought between Rome and Persia in 421 have drawn a great deal of attention.' So this paper will attempt to navigate the 20 years from John's initial efforts up to the outbreak of the war without much modern support. Beginning from a series of clues in ancient sources I will try to gather apparently unre lated narratives into a story of how John inadvertently contributed to the event that Kenneth Hoium called 'Pulcheria's Crusade'. Not that this war earned any of the historical significance of the later crusades. Our sources tell of various religious disputes on the border that led to a Roman incursion into Sasanian territory, but the conflict was quickly dropped without any major strategic out come.2 On the other hand, this conflict could be seen as a milestone in the development of the role of exclusive religions in imperial politics. -

TEMPUS FUGIT Melissa Pheterson In 1941 my grandfather’s mother opened a letter informing her son of his duty to serve in World War II. She crumpled on the floor and died of grief. Last Sunday, my mother, who lives in the town next to mine, returned from a grueling weekend of caring for my daughter—cooking dinner, coax- ing her to eat, bathing her, sustaining her kicks of protest over the slathering of lotion—only to collapse into bed at twilight with her iPad and find on Facebook a picture of Paige taken with her other grandmother, both forcibly yet prettily posed at a restaurant. “Facebook is a crock of…soup!” she texted me before weeping into the night, or so I deduced from her splotchy face at the airport the next morning. We were on the way to visit my grandparents. 87 88 VALPARAISO FICTION REVIEW “If your in-laws were nicer,” she muttered, re-counting the sandwiches she’d made for Paige to consume in-flight, “I would cook for them. So you wouldn’t have to set foot in a chain restaurant.” My grandparents never bothered to change the previous owners’ Tacky Eighties aesthetic, whose centerpiece was a Formica bar with etched glass waiter carrying a tray of glowing absinthe martinis. My grandfather Jacob used to call him “Harry,” summoning him with a whistle. Now Harry lords it over him; you can just see his tuxedoed silhouette from the den, where my grandpa dozes in his recliner or reads the same paragraph over and over; my grandmother recently bought him a large-print version of Fifty Shades of Grey, trusting her talk shows.
