The Ultimate Run eBook created by daveyhearn.com with the permission of author William T. Endicott STRIVE TOGETHER, THRIVE TOGETHER The Story of JON LUGBILL and DAVID HEARN This chapter discusses the paddling careers of Jon Lugbill and David Hearn, the top C1s in the World for the last several years. I feel it is appropriate to talk about them together for a variety of reasons. First, "Davey" and "Kid" as friends call them, are great rivals -- and great friends. Secondly, they approached canoe slalom from two opposite perspectives. Jon always emphasized great speed and power, particularly in accelerating the boat after a turn. Davey concentrated on endurance and cleanliness. As time went on, however, each began to do more of what the other had emphasized. This was especially true after 1979. The final reason for treating them both in the same chapter is because I feel the American C1s, as symbolized by Jon and Davey, have become one of the greatest driving forces in whitewater canoeing today, and I don't believe either could have accomplished this without the other pushing him. Jon Lugbill, Bill Endicott, and Davey Hearn right after the 1981 C1 team race. "That was the greatest team run in the history of the World Championships." (Alex Haller Photo) 296 In this regard, I should add that Kent Ford, Bob Robison, and Ron Lugbill (Jon's older brother), have played an important supporting role in this story. Space does not permit giving them the attention I would like to, but suffice it to say that, had it not been for Jon and Davey, I would have been writing about them! The rivalry between Jon and Davey, then, should be regarded as symbolic of the greater rivalry -- and friendship -- among all five C1s.

Jon Lugbill, undefeated in the World Championships in Cl, having won the individual and team twice (1979, 1981). (James M. Thresher Photo) 8 SECTION I: TECHNIQUE The Ultimate Run eBook created by daveyhearn.com with the permission of author William T. Endicott Cl TECHNIQUE General Remarks This chapter is based on the gate techniques of Jon Lugbill, Davey Hearn, Bob Robison, and Kent Ford, who, along with Ron Lugbill, have dominated the C1 class for the last several years. Ron Lugbill was in France when I wrote this book and thus I could not consult him. Since the late 1970's, these athletes have completely revolutionized Cl, each year coming closer and closer to the K1 times in the World Championships. Certainly a very big part of this revolution was the rules change in 1973 which permitted a canoe to have ends which were lower than the middle of the boat. That, and the 1971 change narrowing C1s from 80 centimeters to 70, has done a great deal to speed up the class. But in the middle 1970s, the top C1 paddlers were holdovers from the earlier years, who were brought up on the bigger boats and who did not really appreciate what could be done with the new ones. With sleeker craft, the American C1s began to compare themselves to K1s, always looking to beat them in races. If I had to describe the key characteristic of the top C1s today in one word, it would be "pivot". The concept of the pivot turn -- leaning back and upstream to catch the edge of the boat and thus shorten the waterline -- is found time and time again in the description of the C1 techniques which are to follow in this chapter.

C2 - C2M TECHNIQUE America's Paul Grabow (left) and Jef Huey, Bronze Medalists in individual and team at the 1981 World Championships at Bala, Wales. (Elizabeth Johns Photo) 65 The Ultimate Run eBook created by daveyhearn.com with the permission of author William T. Endicott C2 TECHNIQUE This chapter is based on the technique of Stephen and Michael Garvis (the "Garvi", as they are called) who won the World Championships in 1981 at Bala, Wales; and to a lesser extent, on the technique of Paul Grabow and Jef Huey, who were C2 Bronze Medalists at Bala, as well as on Elizabeth Hayman and Fritz Haller, 1981 C2M World Champions. The Garvi and Huey-Grabow paddle bow right, Haller-Hayman paddle bow left. The reader should bear in mind however, that all three teams have the following characteristics in common: * All three have the heaviest person in the stern. * All three have the person with the longest reach in the stern. Thus, there is no discussion of other types of teams such as Dieter Welsink and Peter Czupryna of West Germany, 1979 World Champions, who had the person with the longest reach in the bow. While there is much to learn from studying these teams, the reader should, of course, have an eye for what is appropriate to his C2 team and what is not. In C2, perhaps more than in the other classes, there are individual differences. In the C2, the two partners have to decide how they are going to divide up the workload, leans (both side-to-side and fore-and-aft) and training schedule.
