STS-125 MISSION SUMMARY OCTOBER 2008 ATLANTIS (STS-125)

SpaceshuttleAtlantis’upcoming11daymissionisthefinalshuttleflighttoNASA’s HubbleSpaceTelescope.Fivespacewalksareplannedtoinstallnewinstrumentsand thermalblankets,repairtwoexistinginstruments,refurbishsubsystemsandreplace gyroscopesandbatteries.Theresultwillbesixworking,complementarysciencein strumentswithcapabilitiesbeyondwhatisnowavailable,andanextendedoperational lifespanthroughatleast2013.Thesevenmembercrewwillenhancetheobservatory andensurecuttingedgescience.Itputsinplaceadvancedtechnologythatimproves thediscoverypowerofHubbleby10to70times.

(GrunsfeldwillbeExtravehicular(EV)1wearingthespacesuitwithsolidredstripes;FeustelwillbeEV2wearing thesuitwithnomarkings;MassiminowillbeEV3wearingbrokenhorizontalstripes;GoodwillbeEV4wearingthe suitwithbarberpoleredstripes.) • Onflightday4,GrunsfeldandFeustelwillreplaceawidefieldcamera.Theyalsowillswapoutthreebatteries andinstallamechanismforaspacecrafttocapturefordeorbitattheendofthetelescope’slife. • Onflightday5,MassiminoandGoodwillchangeoutthreeboxes,eachcontainingtwoofthetelescope’ssix gyroscopes,andthreebatteries. • Onflightday6,GrunsfeldandFeustelwillinstalltheCosmicOriginsSpectrograph,adevicethatwillperform spectroscopy,thescienceofbreakinguplightintoitsindividualcomponents.Theastronautsalsowillconduct repairstotheAdvancedCameraforSurveys,whichhasexperiencedpowerfailures,causingtwoofthetele scope’sthreeobservingchannelstostopoperating. • Onflightday7,MassiminoandGoodwillrepairandupgradetheSpaceTelescopeImagingSpectrograph, whichstoppedworkingin2004duetopowerfailures,andinstallastainlesssteelblanketonHubble’sexterior. Theblanketsprovideadditionalthermalprotectionforsomeequipmentbays,replacingtheexistingmultilayer insulationthathasdegradedovertime. • Onflightday8,GrunsfeldandFeustelwillreplaceasensorneededforpointingthetelescopeandinstallan otherblanketonHubble’sexterior.
