Did the Lord Jesus Found the Catholic Church? St. Mary’s Catholic Church @ @ @ @ @ Greenville, South Carolina 4 September 2016 Dear Friends in Christ, 1. As part of our safe environment for the protection of children, it is required by the diocese that everyone on our campus, volunteer and employee alike, who has regular contact with children under the age of 18 must receive a background investigation and training through the Virtus program. This applies without exception to any and every activity on church property, and if you have contact with children in any setting at St. Mary’s but have not yet received the background check and Virtus training, please be in touch with me immediately to arrange for both. Until these steps are taken, no one is authorized to have contact with children at any event on our campus. 2. Because we do not have rest rooms in our church, those who need to use a rest room must cross Miller Square and enter Sacred Heart Hall. It is understandable that parents with several children might be inclined to allow older children to make this trip unaccompanied during Mass, but no child should ever be left unaccompanied on our campus, even for a quick bathroom trip. Older siblings or friends making that rest room run together might work, but the best solution of all is for a parent to accompany the child to Sacred Heart Hall. 3. Information about the protection of children can be found on our parish website and on the diocesan website at www.catholic-doc.org. All adults in the parish are invited to be mindful of our common responsibility to protect our children, and if you observe anything that causes you concern, you are always welcome to speak to me, to the school principal, or to anyone on our staff about your concerns. Likewise feel free to speak up if you have suggestions for how we can help create a safe and nurturing environment for our children. 4. When school is in session, no one is permitted on our campus during the school day without permission. You are always welcome, of course, to visit the church by parking in the Washington Street parking lot on the west side of the church, but anyone approaching a school building or crossing the athletic field without a visitor’s pass will be challenged by a staff member. For the same reason, even parishioners may not use our athletic facilities while school children are on campus, including during Late Stay which ends at 6 pm. Please understand that these measures are all designed to help us create the safest possible environment for the children entrusted to our care. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us. Saint Athanasius and Saint Gregory are two of the eight illustrious Doctors of the Greek and Latin Church. And I recall the amusing but perceptive observation of my seminary colleague Fr. George Rutler who once remarked, "Anglicans become Catholic for theological reasons and Catholics become Anglican for glandular reasons." Yes indeed: it was for theological reasons. And it was the Catholic Church's appreciation of the Anglican patrimony which laid the foundation for bringing the expression of the faith we inherited under the protection of the Holy See. Saint Athanasius, at one point, only had the Holy Father as a true colleague; and Saint Gregory became the Roman Pontiff and in that capacity "the Apostle to the English," in the Venerable Bede's wonderful phrase.

    Southwark Cathedral Lecture July 3rd 2008 ANGLICANS AND THE INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURE INTRODUCTION – BIBLE, BELIEF AND WORSHIP Original title: “The Anglican Understanding and Use of Scripture” I queried the use of “the” and the singular (in “understanding and use”). I was always taught that Anglicans have no separate doctrine and belief – this is rather a commonly repeated tenet of Anglicans. Archbishop Geoffrey Fisher: “We have no doctrine of our own – we only possess the Catholic doctrine of the Catholic Church enshrined in the Catholic creeds and those creeds we hold without addition or diminution.”1 Bishop Stephen Neil: “There are no special Anglican doctrines, there is no particular Anglican theology.”2 This view was challenged by Bishop Stephen Sykes in an essay originally written for the Lambeth Conference of 1988 and reprinted his Unashamed Anglicanism, in which he argues at least for an Anglican understanding of the church, if not doctrine, which also includes a commitment to the public reading of scripture.3 I would be interested to know how Canon Jane Steen’s lecture handled this topic of Anglican Belief last week! (not yet on the website). But at the very least, even granting Bishop Sykes’ point about an Anglican understanding of the church, there is no one, single Anglican doctrine for the understanding and use of scripture. Furthermore, the use of the singular “scripture” itself is somewhat problematic. After all, ta biblia in Greek, the word which gives us our singular word ‘Bible’, is actually plural, and means ‘the books’ so the phrase, “the scriptures” is a much better translation of ta biblia – and recognizes the essential plurality of the scriptures, namely that the Bible is a library containing some 66 books, written in several different languages, in a variety of literary genres and types (narrative, poetry, drama, prophetic oracles, biographies, letters and so forth) over a period 1 G.F.

    Can the pope or bishops restrict the Latin Mass? Question: Do Pope Francis or our bishops actually have authority to restrict the Latin Mass? The Council of Trent codified the Latin Mass from earlier liturgies, approving the Roman Missal used from 1570. Pope Benedict also taught in Summorum Pontificum that the pre-Conciliar Mass could not be suppressed. — Kevin Brehmer, Toledo, Ohio Answer: This is a complex issue that includes both liturgical and canonical considerations. Arguably, the older form of the Mass in use before 1962 cannot be abrogated — that is, it cannot be declared to be invalid or illicit to celebrate. It is an ancient form of the Mass extending back some 1,500 years; far older than the norm established by the Council of Trent, which forbade the suppression of a rite or form of the Mass older than 200 years. Hence it would seem that any priest can use this form of the Mass. That said, a diocesan bishop is the moderator of the sacred liturgy in his diocese. As such, he can establish norms for the public celebration of holy Mass that regulate when and where variations of the holy Mass can be celebrated. For example, beginning in 2015, the Anglican Use of the Roman rite was approved for celebration in the Church. But that did not mean that every parish could use this rite (which is much like the Traditional Latin Mass, but in English). Rather, the bishop could designate places and priests which or who could licitly celebrate this form of the Mass. This is what bishops do.
