Late Precambrian) f has been a subject matter of keen geological interest ever!since it attracted the attention of the Indian Geological Survey in 1854. From that time onwards a great deal of work has been done on these interest- ing rocks, but in view of the enormity of the Vindhyan basin, much more work is still needed before any attanpt is made to answer many of the intriguing questions concerning its mode of formation and palaeogeography. The Vindhyan rocks offer excellent opportunities for studying ancient sedimentary processes and products. Perhaps they present one of the very few cases of unmetamorphosed and undeformed sequences of a very ancient age which contain within them such a wide spectrum of lithological characters and sedimentary structures, and were deposited under so varied

    102 CHAPTER 6. FLOW, BEDFORMS AND STRATIFICATION UNDER OSCILLATORY AND COMBINED FLOWS INTRODUCTION Bedforms and stratification produced by unidirectional flows are well understood after almost a century of study in flumes and natural settings. However, in the geologic record of marine and lacustrine depositional environments other classes of fluid flow are important in producing structures that are preserved and form an interpretive basis for those deposits. Figure 6-1 summarizes a continuum of flow types, from purely unidirectional flows to purely oscillatory flows, between which are a range of mixed flows and their components are shown in the lower half of the figure. In this section we will begin by examining the nature of currents, bedforms and stratification produced by wind-generated waves on a free water surface (i.e., purely oscillatory flow). This will be followed by a very brief description of the bedforms and stratification that develop when unidirectional and oscillatory currents are superimposed to produce a general class of flow termed a combined flow. Note that figure 6-1 is a simplification of possible natural flows. To begin with, the classification shown in figure 6-1 does not consider the angular relationship between the oscillatory and unidirectional components: the resultant current produced by co-linear flows (i.e., both act in the same direction) will be much less complex than in the case where the oscillatory component acts at some angle to the unidirectional component. In addition, in natural flows several different oscillatory and unidirectional components may act simultaneously to result in a very complex flow pattern.

It is located beside a high hill near the Gambheri River. Chittorgarh is located between 23° 32' and 25° 13' north latitudes and between 74° 12' and 75° 49' east longitudes in the southeastern part of Rajasthan state. The district encompasses 10,856 square km (3.17 per cent of the Rajasthan State) area of land. It has an average elevation of 394 metres (1292 ft.) Above Sea Level and a population of 1,544,338 of which male and female were 783,171 and 761,167 respectively (2011census), which increased 16.08% from 2001 to 2011. INTRODUCTION Chhatarpur was founded in 1785 and is named after the Bundela Rajput leader Chhatrasal, the founder of Bundelkhand independence, and contains his cenotaph. The state was ruled by his descendants until 1785. At that time the Ponwar clan of the Rajputs took control of Chhatarpur. The state was guaranteed to Kunwar Sone Singh Ponwar in 1806 by the British Raj. In 1854 Chhatarpur would have lapsed to the British government for want of direct heirs under the doctrine of lapse, but was conferred on Jagat Raj as a special act of grace. The Ponwar Rajas ruled a princely state with an area of 1,118 square miles (2,900 km2), and population of 156,139 in 1901, which was part of the Bundelkhand agency of Central India. In 1901 the town of Chhatarpur had a population of 10,029, a high school and manufactured paper and coarse cutlery. The state also contained the British cantonment of Nowgong. After the independence of India in 1947, the Rajas of Chhatarpur acceded to India, and Chhatarpur, together with the rest of Bundelkhand, became part of the Indian state of Vindhya Pradesh.
