Bishop of the Los Angeles Area, it is my privilege and delight to welcome you to the California‐ Pacific Annual Conference and beautiful San Diego, California for the 2012 Western Jurisdictional Conference. As I prepare to move into the retired relationship after 12 years here, it is a special pleasure to welcome you to the places and people that I have come to appreciate and love. I hope you will find time to partake of many of the exciting opportunities our communities can provide. It will be exciting to see the diverse ministries of our Western Jurisdiction represented here, and I pray that during the coming days, as old bonds are renewed and new ones formed, it will also be a time of spiritual fruitfulness. Please also join me in offering our ‘extravagant hospitality’ to Bishop Eduardo Carrillo, our guest from Tijuana, and to Bishop Sharon Rader, our Council of Bishops representative for this gathering. May God’s blessing be with us as stories are told and seeds planted and ministries imagined; may blessings flow through our worship and prayer and discernment as we build up the Church in these our western states. Surely God’s extravagant hospitality will bear fruit beyond measure when we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit: thanks be to God from Whom all blessings flow! Shalom, Bishop Mary Ann Swenson 4 Dear New Friends in Christ, Thank you for the support and guidance you have graciously shared with me through the past four years, my first term as your secretary. It has been a steep learning curve for me, but thanks be to God, you have guided me into this new role. With joy, I can review the lists of committee chairs and put a face with almost every name. I have gained a whole new perspective on the organization and work of the United Methodist Church beyond the bounds of my home Yellowstone Conference. As I add my words of welcome to the 2012 Jurisdictional Conference, I pray that this will be a time for reflection, introspection and preparation for new growth for us all. May we be renewed in vigor produced by hope in the ongoing creation of our living Lord. I am convinced that our congregations and communities
