The extensive timelines have been broken into ten stages, drawing attention to a number of periods and reasons in the history of those eras for the unique experience of vernacular liturgy and the issues connected with it in the Western Catholic Church of our time. The role and function of International Committee of English in the Liturgy (ICEL) over its forty year existence still has a major impact on the way we worship in English. This article deals with the restructuring of ICEL which had been the centre of much controversy in recent years and now operates under different protocols.

  • Feast of St. Mary Magdalene - “Apostle of the Apostles”
Office of Worship Diocese of Honolulu Memorandum TO: All Clergy, Religious, Catholic Schools, and Lay Organizations FROM: Deacon Modesto Cordero, Director, Office of Worship DATE: June 22, 2016 RE: Feast of St. Mary Magdalene - “Apostle of the Apostles” On June 3, 2016 the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has published a new decree by which Pope Francis elevated the July 22nd obligatory memorial of St. Mary Magdalene to a feast day on the church’s liturgical calendar, putting her on par with the apostles. Vatican’s decree and article titled "Apostolorum Apostola" ("Apostle of the Apostles") recognizes St. Mary Magdalene's role as the first to witness Christ's resurrection and as a "true and authentic evangelizer.” Archbishop Arthur Roche, Secretary of the Congregation, wrote that in celebrating "an evangelist who proclaims the central joyous message of Easter," St. Mary Magdalene's feast day is a call for all Christians to "reflect more deeply on the dignity of women, the new evangelization and the greatness of the mystery of divine mercy." "Pope Francis has taken this decision precisely in the context of the Jubilee of Mercy to highlight the relevance of this woman who showed great love for Christ and was much loved by Christ," Archbishop Roche wrote. In the Mass and in the Divine Office to be celebrated on that date from now on, the usual texts in the Roman Missal and the Liturgy of the Hours will be used, but the Mass will also include a specific Preface entitled "de apostolorum apostola" (“Apostle of the apostles") which is yet to be formally translated into English.

  • THE BISHOP of LEEDS the Right Reverend Marcus Stock
THE BISHOP OF LEEDS The Right Reverend Marcus Stock NOTIFICATION OF CHANGES TO CLERGY APPOINTMENTS To the Clergy, Religious, Seminarians and Lay Faithful of the Diocese of Leeds I wish to inform you of a significant number of changes which I shall be making to clergy appointments and to various roles and responsibilities within the Diocese of Leeds in the summer and during the months following. NEW VICAR GENERAL Firstly, I wish to express my most sincere thanks to our current Vicar Generals for the dedicated, tireless and faithful ministry which they have given to supporting me since my ordination as the Bishop of Leeds. I am very conscious too of the same loyal and devoted support which they gave to my predecessors, Bishop David Konstant and Archbishop Arthur Roche, and to the assistance they gave to Mgr John Wilson (now Auxiliary Bishop in Westminster Diocese) when he was the Diocesan Administrator in Leeds during the Sede Vacante. Mgr Kieran Heskin has served as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia for 23 years, and Mgr Michael McQuinn has served as Vicar General for 13 years. The ministry which they have been called upon to exercise can be, without doubt, at times very difficult and not a little stressful. However, they have carried out their ministries with selflessness and great dedication and their experience, advice and support has proved invaluable to me during the first important months of my episcopal ministry. After such a long and distinguished period of service to the diocese in these important roles, I now wish to allow them to stand down from the heavy responsibilities which they have held for so long.

  • Letter to the Clergy, Religious and Lay People Of
LETTER TO THE CLERGY, RELIGIOUS AND LAY PEOPLE OF THE DIOCESE OF LEEDS My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Last week, I learnt of my appointment by His Holiness, Pope Francis, as the 10th Bishop of the Diocese of Leeds. I am overwhelmed at the trust which the Holy Father has placed in me. I have written to the Holy Father and assured him, as the Successor of St Peter and Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, of my loyal and filial love, and of my intention to give myself entirely to the service of the Diocese of Leeds. I am only too conscious of my weaknesses and sinfulness. It is therefore with humility and the desire to obey the call to serve, in whatever way the Church asks of me, that I have accepted this appointment. Before all else therefore, I ask for your prayers for me. Throughout my ministry as a priest, I have been sustained in grace by the prayers of the parishioners and religious that I have been privileged to serve and by the prayers of my brother clergy in the Archdiocese of Birmingham. This is the first thing for which I hope; to be assured of your prayers. And from now on, I assure you, for my part you will be in the first thoughts of my prayers each day. The second thing for which I hope is to be able to express as strongly as I can, my thanks. Thanks to my predecessors, Archbishop Arthur Roche and Bishop David Konstant, on whose firm legacy I can only hope to build; and, my thanks to Mgr.
