Sophie Menter
Sophie Menter (b. Munich, 29 July 1846 – d. Stockdorf nr. Munich, 23 Feb. 1918) Ungarische Zigeunerweisen für Klavier und Orchester (Hungarian Gypsy Songs for Piano and Orchestra) orchestrated by P. I. Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Sophie Menter was one of the greatest and much lauded pianists of the later nineteenth- and early twentieth centuries. Musically precocious, Menter, who was the daughter of the distinguished violoncellist Josef Menter and his wife, the singer Wilhelmine Menter (née Diepold), pursued her early studies with Julius Leonhard, Siegmund Lebert and Friederich Niest.1 She made her orchestral debut in 1861 with Weber’s Konzertstücke conducted by Franz Lachner and, in 1863, embarked on her first concert tour with recitals in Germany and Switzerland.2 Much acclaimed for her Liszt performances even at this early stage of her career, Menter subsequently studied with Carl Tausig and Hans von Bülow (1867-1869) and finally in Budapest with Franz Liszt (1869-1870) who called her ‘my only legitimate musical daughter.’3 Menter pursued a busy recital career throughout Europe, visiting Britain a number of times between 1881 and 1907,4 the success of her first visit resulting in her being elected to an honorary membership of the Philharmonic Society of London.5 Menter’s distinguished career was capped by royal appointments as Court Pianist to the Prince of Hohenzollern, and also the Austrian Emperor.6 Between 1883 and 1887 she was Professor of Pianoforte at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Menter was married to the Czech violoncellist David Popper (1843-1913) between 1872 and 1886 but after their divorce she resigned from St. -

Lemares massiva transkriptionsarbete. I det här arbetet undersöks hur Lemares transkriptionskonst är utformad och hur hans metoder kan appliceras på eget transkriptionsarbete. Lemares och andras transkriptioner jämförs med Wagners originalpartitur för att metoder och verktyg ska kunna observeras. Dessa appliceras på en egen transkription, vars skapelseprocess redogörs för. Detta arbete visar att Lemare använder sig av en metodisk teknik som i stora drag grundar sig på det klangliga resultatets slutliga kvalitet. I det här arbetet beskrivs denna teknik relativt ingående, för att om möjligt bidra med insikter och metoder för den av transkriptioner intresserade. The big picture - Welte’s instruments, rolls, recording, digital editing by David Rumsey The Welte Philharmonie - or Philharmonic to most English-speakers - was an ingenious musical instrument. Its origins lay in both the pneumatics and acoustics of the ancient Greeks, to say nothing of their mechanics, hydraulics or music. In the 20th century, both the “Phil”, as it is affectionately known in some circles, and aeronautical engineering, brought human arts and sciences of using air to their zenith. Pneumatic organ actions were then transformed to electric actions although there was a later reaction back to mechanics. For the aviation industry it was seminal: aircraft now replaced steam engines and organs as the most complex technology known to civilisation. The many ages and stages between the ancient Greeks, and Welte’s early 20th century automatic instruments, produced a train of incremental invention. Each epoch found ways of making organs play and sound the way it wanted them to. That changed with every new aesthetic from gothic, renaissance, baroque, “neo- classical” late 18th century, through the romantic era and on to a second, “neo- classical” phase, in the 20th century. It differed from country to country, culture to culture, even language to language: whether French, German, Italian, English or Netherlands, organs were also expressions of national ethos. By the early 19th century, the means of controlling the aesthetic qualities of organ pipes had long been established by empirical means: if it sounded good, then that was the way it was done. Sounding good, of course, differed according to Welte’s original proposal for the appearance of whether you were a medieval Britannic’s Philharmonie on board Netherlander, a renaissance Spaniard, a baroque Saxon, or your language and culture were “classical” French. -

The Buffalo Soldiers in Vermont, 1909–1913 The arrival of the Tenth Cavalry sent Burlington into demographic shock. Almost overnight the small city acquired a substantial black community, a situation that clearly dismayed many residents. By David Work n July 1909, the Tenth United States Cavalry Regiment, one of four regular army black regiments collectively known as the Buffalo ISoldiers, arrived in Burlington, Vermont, to begin a four-year tour of duty at Fort Ethan Allen in neighboring Colchester. Their arrival alarmed the almost exclusively white population. Many people feared the presence of sizable numbers of African American soldiers in their community and a bitter debate ensued over whether the city should adopt Jim Crow facilities. For the next four years, the Tenth Cavalry would encounter similar reactions as it traveled throughout the north- east and as far south as Winchester, Virginia. Wherever they went, the black soldiers faced fear and suspicion and had to demonstrate good behavior to win the acceptance of the white population. Created in 1866, the Tenth Cavalry achieved its greatest fame in the late nineteenth century on the western frontier and then served with distinction during the Spanish-American War. In that conflict, the regi- ment charged up San Juan Hill with Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders and won public renown as the “fighting Tenth Cavalry.” In the early twentieth century, the Tenth fought in the Philippine War, served in ..................... Sociology Study, December 2015, Vol. 5, No. 12, 920‐930 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2015.12.003 DAVID PUBLISHING Simple but Dominant: How to Reshine Depeche Mode on Album Covers After 80’s Cinla Sekera Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the album covers of English band Depeche Mode after 80’s according to the principles of graphic design. Established in 1980, the musical style of the band was turned from synth‐pop to new wave, from new wave to electronic, dance, and alternative‐rock in decades, but their message stayed as it was: A non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. As a graphic design product, album covers are pre‐print design solutions of two dimensional surfaces. Graphic design, as a design field, has its own elements and principles. Visual elements and typography are the two components which should unite with the help of the six main principles which are: unity/harmony; balance; hierarchy; scale/proportion; dominance/emphasis; and similarity and contrast. All album covers of Depeche Mode after 80’s were designed in a simple but dominant way in order to form a unique style. On every album cover, there are huge color, size, tone, and location contrasts which concluded in simple domination; domination of a non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. Vinocour 2006, S. 61) Profil Sophie Menter zählte in den letzten Jahrzehnten des 19. Jahrhunderts zu den großen Virtuosinnen und herausra- genden Liszt-Interpretinnen, die von London bis St. Pe- tersburg über 40 Jahre das Publikum zu Begeisterungs- stürmen hinriss. Sophie Menter wurde u. a. von Friedrich Niest in Mün- chen und Carl Tausig in Berlin ausgebildet und musizier- te häufig gemeinsam mit Franz Liszt an zwei Flügeln, der sie als Pianistin sehr schätzte. Ihre Interpretationen sei- ner Werke, darunter besonders das Klavierkonzert Es- Dur, wurden legendär. Entsprechend wurde Sophie Men- ter von Beginn ihrer Karriere an von konservativer Seite angegriffen, die ihr zu wenig musikalische Sensibilität und zu viel Kraft vorwarf. Während ihrer Zeit als Hofpianistin am Hof von Löwen- berg lernte sie den Cellisten David Popper kennen, den Die Pianistin Sophie Menter. Fotografie Wegner & Mottu, sie 1872 heiratete und mit dem sie nach ihrer Ernennung Amsterdam und Utrecht, o.D. zur k.k. Hofpianistin 1877 vermutlich nach Pest zog. Von 1884 bis 1887 war Sophie Menter Professorin am Konser- Sophie Menter vatorium in St. Petersburg, wo sie die Klavierklasse von Ehename: Sophie Menter-Popper Louis Brassin übernahm, zu deren Schüler u. a. It is designated as a tax-exempt organization, 501(c)(3), by the Internal Revenue Service. Conferences held each year in the early spring give members the opportunity to share information and ideas, to hear performances, and to enjoy the company of others with similar interests. The Society publishes three periodicals. The Journal of the Society for American Music, a quarterly journal, is published for the Society by Cambridge University Press. Contents are chosen through review by a distinguished editorial advisory board representing the many subjects and professions within the field of American music.The Society for American Music Bulletin is published three times yearly and provides a timely and informal means by which members communicate with each other. The annual Directory provides a list of members, their postal and email addresses, and telephone and fax numbers.
