  • Rich Froning Overcomes Adversity and Pressure to Stand Atop the Crossfit Games Podium for the Fourth Consecutive Year
THE Amazing Grace JOURNAL Rich Froning overcomes adversity and pressure to stand atop the CrossFit Games podium for the fourth consecutive year. By Andréa Maria Cecil Shaun Cleary/CrossFit Journal He looked determined, almost angry. It was seconds before Sunday's Midline March at the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games—the first individual event of the final day. Three-time champ Rich Froning awaited the buzzer. Between the athletes and the finish line were 3 rounds of 25 GHD sit-ups, a 50-foot handstand walk and 50 feet of walking overhead lunges with 155 lb. Noah Ohlsen, a rookie who had been near the top of the Leaderboard for most of the competition, was ahead early in the event. When he moved on to the second round, it looked as if he’d win—as long as he could keep that pace. He couldn’t. In quintessential fashion, Froning surpassed his competitors on the second round of lunges. Spectators in the 27,000-seat soccer stadium inside the StubHub Center erupted in cheering, rooting for the unexpected underdog. Then they rose to their feet as Froning finished the final lunge and recorded a time of 5:25 flat. He dumped the barbell and extended his arms straight out to his sides, vigorously waving them upward to elicit roars from the crowd. He wasn’t done. After winning the heat and the event, he went on to encourage nearly every competitor who remained on the field, one by one, until each man crossed the finish line. That was followed by a short, live on-camera interview.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT INFORMATION: Tim Chan Media Contact The CrossFit Games +1 619 944 3302 [email protected] Athletes Face the Unknown at the 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games Tia-Clair Toomey and Mat Fraser Continue to Lead MADISON, Wisconsin, U.S., Aug. 4, 2018 — The 2018 Reebok CrossFit Games continued Saturday at 8:30 a.m. CT. Individual athletes started the day with Madison Triplus, an event that required athletes to swim 500 meters, paddle 1,000 meters and run 2,000 meters. Australia’s Tia-Clair Toomey and Dean Linder-Leighton dominated the event, finishing in 25:35.01 and 26:37.51, respectively. The event known only as “Chaos” was up next—no accompanying description was offered to athletes or fans before the event began. Athletes were informed that their judges would guide them through the event, explaining which movements they were to complete. The event epitomized CrossFit’s focus on preparing for the unknown and unknowable, and Games veterans Katrin Davidsdottir and Patrick Vellner conquered the chaos, winning the event in 8:19.35 and 9:19.86, respectively. Bicouplet 1 and Bicouplet 2 closed out Saturday. Fans were given the chance to vote via Facebook for which event athletes would complete first. Bicouplet 2 was chosen: 12, 9 and 6 reps for time of barbell snatches and bar muscle-ups. This meant athletes had 6 minutes to complete the work, then a 1-minute transition before they’d move on to Bicouplet 1: 21, 15 and 9 reps of barbell snatches at a lighter weight and chest-to-bar pull-ups.

Three events from the 2019 CrossFit Games were transcribed verbatim and analyzed to answer five hypotheses relating to the overarching question of this paper; Do commentators’ talks contain noticeable differences in the mentions of female and male athletes? The results of the five hypotheses were mixed; two were confirmed, two were ambiguous, and one was refuted. However, in relation to previous research, the conclusion of this paper was that the phenomenon of gender-biased speech in sports commentary exists in the sport of CrossFit in the year 2019. This paper suggests that further research should be carried out in the field of gender-biased commentary in sports and its relation to society and, more specifically the communities of both athletes and commentators. I propose that these documentaries deploy discursive narratives that produce an “ideal” body through self-discipline and controlled consumption and that in order for an individual to be an “ideal” athlete, and therefor healthy citizen, they must be willing to suffer and consume CrossFit. The (white) women of CrossFit are depicted as having the capacity to “outperform” the men, however, this “progressive” image of female athletes is suspect as CrossFit and Reebok actively exploit this image for capital gain.
