JOURNAL ARTICLES The Names and Numbers Behind the Games Things you didn’t know about the CrossFit Games regional qualifiers and the athletes they produced. Mike Warkentin Elite CrossFit athletes from around the world are now gathering in Aromas, California, site of this weekend’s CrossFit Games. As the excitement mounts, let’s take look back at the regional qualifiers. The results are all online—every rep, every second, every pound. In the end, 61 WODs at 19 regional quali- fiers produced 137 athletes, plus 11 who qualified on their past performances. The vital stats and PRs of these athletes can be found online on the 2009 CrossFit Games website. But names and numbers don’t always tell the whole story.... 1 of 6 Copyright © 2009 CrossFit, Inc. Spealler Sarah Most regions produced at least one heavy competi- tor, but the Northwest Qualifier produced more than its share. All four male representatives—Moe Kelsey, Jerome Perryman, Jason Neago and Jordan Holland —tip the scales above two bills. The lightest 1RM deadlift in the group is the 485 belonging to Kelsey. Perryman, on the other hand, can pull 606—more than any other Games competitor. The Northwest Qualifier featured max press and deadlift events, which usually favour heavier athletes. The final WOD was a triplet that included five rounds of three muscle-ups, 30 wall-ball shots (20 lb.) and six sumo deadlift high pulls (60 kg).

  • Individual Men Mathew Fraser
2018 ATHLETE GUIDE INDIVIDUAL MEN MATHEW FRASER AGE: 28 EXPERIENCE: 5 YEARS REGIONAL FINISH: 1ST, CENTRAL In the conversation for the men’s title, there is Mat Fraser and there is everyone else. After finishing second in his first two appearances at the Games, domination has been the hallmark of his CrossFit career. From 2016 until now, Fraser has been in the overall lead after 41 of the 47 events in which he has competed at the Regional and Games levels. With no clear weaknesses, his trajectory still looks as if it’s aimed for outer space. No one man can beat Fraser. Rather, the men’s field will have to box him out of the top five and steal enough points to keep him in striking distance if anyone is to have a chance. —Rory McKernan PATRICK VELLNER AGE: 28 EXPERIENCE: 3 YEARS REGIONAL FINISH: 1ST, EAST Patrick Vellner is in his fourth year of CrossFit Games individual competition. He has quickly become a household name in the sport with back-to-back third-place finishes in the 2016 and 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games. He has very few weaknesses in his game, and he put his talents on display when he took first in the 2018 East Regional, never finishing an event outside of the top three. Vellner also took the top spot in a cross-regional compar- ison of all athletes in all regions. There aren’t many men who can potentially dethrone Mat Fraser, but Vellner is one of them. —Dan Bailey BRENT FIKOWSKI AGE: 27 EXPERIENCE: 3 YEARS REGIONAL FINISH: 1ST, WEST In the sport of CrossFit, Brent Fikowski has made quite a name for himself.

The dummy, dubbed “Randy,” weighed 185 lb. for the men and 165 lb. for the women. Athletes wore weight vests during the event (20 lb. for the men, 14 lb. for the women). Imposing sex segregation on sports is problematic for many reasons. Sex segregation reflects and reinforces a binary view of both sex and gender unsupported by science. It communicates that women are physically unable to compete against men, even though research indicates considerable variation among individual athletes and different sports, and further reveals that attributes other than sex are often more important determinants of athletic ability. It reinforces unfounded gender stereotypes that harm both women and men. And sex segregation uncritically prioritizes athletic activities involving strengths typically associated with male bodies, without requiring us to ask why we view these strengths as the most important in the first place.

Mat Fraser, of the United States, stayed on top, and Tia-Clair Toomey, of Australia, was back as the leader among women with one day of competition ahead. Saturday ended around 8:15 p.m. today with individual athletes facing three tests: Strongman’s Fear, Muscle-Up Clean Ladder and Heavy 17.5. In a welcome reprieve from the previous two days of cloudy skies and rain, the weather was sunny and warm on Day 3. Fraser ended the day with a second-place finish and two first-place finishes to build a 176-point lead over Noah Ohlsen, who sits in second place overall. Brent Fikowski sits in third place; he’s 20 points behind Ohlsen. The day’s events shook up the women’s Leaderboard yet again, putting Toomey in first place, where she ended Day 1. Kara Webb is 14 points behind in second place. Sara Sigmundsdottir sits in third. Organizers have announced one event for Day 4: Madison Triplet, 5 rounds for time of a 450-meter run and 11 hay bale clean burpees with a sandbag (70/100 lb.).
