    apexart WORKS OF ART IN THE SHOW Lots of Things Like This curated by Dave Eggers, April 2 to May 10, 2008 BRIEF ORIGIN AND EXPLANATION OF THIS SHOW: Apexart asked Dave to do a show, and Dave thought of this particular kind of art, which combines image, text, and humor. He thought first of the work of David Shrigley, Raymond Pettibon, Maira Kalman and Tucker Nichols. Then Dave called Jesse Nathan, who had interned at McSweeney’s and who knew art and poetry well. So then Nathan started working with Dave to find and compile a group of artworks that met for our particular requirements. For instance, we weren’t looking for art that used text obliquely or as a design element; the text had to be narrative and had to refer in some way to the image. In some cases the text was a comment on the image made after the fact. Sometimes the two were conceived together. Some work approaches single- panel-cartoonhood; some is closer to fine-art text-art. In most cases, even when we knew an artist, like Pettibon, had work that fit the bill, we also had to rule out a lot of stuff that didn’t. So it was an interesting process, and very rewarding, for we found so many great people, from so many disciplines, who shared this desire to draw and write together and were unafraid to make it funny, too.     Classic Poetry Series David Berman - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive David Berman(4 January 1967) David Berman is an American poet, cartoonist, and singer-songwriter best known for his work with indie-rock band the Silver Jews. <b>Biography</b> David Berman was born January 4, 1967 in Williamsburg, Virginia. He attended high school at Greenhill School in Addison, Texas, before matriculating at the University of Virginia. While in Charlottesville, Virginia, Berman began writing and performing songs (often left on friends' voice message machines) with his loose band, Ectoslavia, primarily composed of UVA classmates Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. Upon graduation from the University of Virginia, the trio moved to Hoboken, New Jersey, where they shared an apartment and adopted the moniker Silver Jews. Before moving to Hoboken, Malkmus had also founded another band, Pavement, with his childhood friend Scott Kannberg. As Pavement's acclaim and visibility grew, the notion arose that the Silver Jews were a "Pavement side-project," despite the fact that Berman's writing, singing, and guitar playing led the band's music, and, of course, the Silver Jews preceded Pavement. On the band's early recordings, Berman even tried to protect the Jews' individuality by listing Malkmus and Nastanovich under aliases, but it backfired when people learned who "Hazel Figurine" and "Bobby N." really were. Not long after the success of Pavement's debut album, Slanted and Enchanted (which was named after a cartoon Berman had created), Dan Koretsky, founder of the Chicago-based indie label Drag City, met Berman at a Pavement show.

Indeed, the prevalent narrative is that American Surrealism was an awkward adolescent moment in contemporary American poetry, falling between the birth of contemporary poetics in the 1950s and its maturity in the canon-opening and postmodernist work that began to bloom in the 1980s. This dissertation attempts two goals. Firstly, it seeks to tell a fuller story of this movement: by examining the poetic successes of the Surrealists—and the intense threat they posed to their more canonical peers—I argue that this movement played a far more significant role in the development of postwar American poetics than it is afforded. Secondly, this dissertation interrogates the cultural, historical and literary phenomena that allowed American Surrealism to emerge in the 1950s and, just as quickly, to disappear. Ultimately, I argue that American Surrealism was a poetic response to the Cold War, and the study of American Surrealism offers unique insight into the relationship between literature and politics during the Cold War.

While the “French School” has been characterized by a preoccupation with tone, a standard repertoire, and set of teaching materials written by Paris Conservatoire professors, no such definition can yet be set forth for the “American School.” This document provides a clear starting point for research into the what, where, why, and how of the “American Flute School” by first identifying who is associated with that school. By tracing the lineage of transverse flute playing from teacher to student through the past 300 years, we may identify orchestral flutist, soloist, and teacher, Georges Barrère, as a primary influence upon American flute playing. Barrère and his students – and his students’ students – have taught approximately 91% of all living flutists in the United States today. Of that vast number, approximately 87% can trace their heritage (through one or more of their teachers) to Barrère student William Kincaid, renowned flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra and pedagogue at the Curtis Institute of Music. It is important to note that most modern musicians study with more than one teacher over the course of their career (usually between three and eight).

While Chura has previously performed "How To Rent a Room" solo in live sets, this version of The Natural Bridge opener came together shortly after Berman's passing this summer. "'How To Rent a Room' has always been one of those songs that I could never let go of," explains Chura. "Ever since the first time I heard it it’s always been one of my favorite songs and remains one that imprinted me as a young songwriter. Now, in light of his death, the lyrics take on a new and much sadder meaning. At the time they seemed conceptual, but the line 'Now there’s a lot of things that I’m gonna miss, like the thunder down country and the way water drips' is now a haunting and deeply poetic rendering of everyday minutiae and the texture of our lives that we don’t appreciate on a daily basis.
