The events in South-East Asia that day changed people's under- standing almost as quickly as it destroyed the lives and livelihood of many millions of people in the area. Many other countries suffered to a lesser extent. Within hours, relief organisations were gearing up a major programme of emergency aid and establishing fund raising programmes to rebuild shattered lives and communities. The UK Disasters Emergency Committee raised £300 Million, including donations from employees and companies throughout the transport industry. But elsewhere thoughts had quickly turned to the potential for practical support for the rebuilding of communities.     Introduction In 2002, a book was published depicting the history of Epsom Coaches. Written by Roy and Andrew Richmond, it celebrated the long life of the business and its development over then, 82 years. The book was amply illustrated with historic and modern photographs, of people, occasions and the fleet across the years. Long out of print, the full text and some of the photographs are reproduced here for the first time online. A new history bringing the story up to date, will be published on the centenary of the company’s founding in 2020 and will be previewed on this website. Andrew & Roy Richmond Pictured in 2002 Chapter 1 THE FORMATIVE YEARS Herbert Roderick Richmond, better known as Roddy, was born on 31st August 1891, and was the youngest son of Frederick and Clara Richmond. Frederick Richmond was a farmer in the village of Reepham in Norfolk. Roddy’s brother was a qualified doctor, and his sister was an accomplished pianist who had regular engagements throughout Austria and Germany. Roddy went to Chapmans Academy, a boarding school in Norwich, where he went through the indignity of being a “fag”, attending to the needs of a house prefect. On market days, his father would go to Norwich to buy and sell sheep, and this gave them an opportunity to meet up occasionally during term time. His father was used to dealing in cash for these transactions, a habit that Roddy and to some extent, Roy followed in later years. The practice ceased when Roy took his trousers for dry cleaning one day without checking his pockets! During the school holidays Roddy used to repair the farm machinery out in the fields.

Gash & Sons Ltd. 1921-1989 William Gash purchased his first vehicle (AL1174 - a secondhand Humber lorry) in 1921, initially to transport the products of his milling business in Elston to the market in Newark. As was the case in the early part of the century the local carrier transported other goods as well, including passengers to the market. Wednesdays was the market day for Newark and the Gash family converted their new acquisition by placing wooden benches under a canvas cover to accomodate around 10 passengers. Extra fittings were made by the village joiner, George Wilkinson, and the fare for the journey was 1 shilling and 6 pence (7½p). In 1922 the lorry was replaced by a model T Ford with a demountable body, again manufactured by George Wilkinson, with seats for 14.

    'Copyright, Amberley Publishing, All Rights Reserved' Scotland’s Independent Coach Operators 7 BSD 560C was an AEC Reliance 2U3RA/Duple (Northern) Alpine Continental C51F that was purchased new by Dodd’s of Troon in May 1965. It was on a visit to Paris when snapped at Notre Dame. The chassis was still sound by 1980, but the coachwork was getting dated, so it was decided to rebody it with a new Willowbrook 003 body. LGG 762E was an AEC Reliance 2U3RA/Alexander Y Type C49F that was delivered new to the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society, Glasgow, for their Majestic Coaches fleet in May 1967. It passed to Altincham Coachways of West Timperley and Guiseley Tours of Yeadon before reaching Irvine’s of Law in April 1975, and was captured passing through Motherwell. 'Copyright, Amberley Publishing, All Rights Reserved' 8 Scotland’s Independent Coach Operators Captured a long way from home while visiting the beautiful city of Chester, we find DGG 7K. It was a Leyland Leopard PSU3B/4R/Plaxton Elite C51F that was purchased new in 1973, and is still looking remarkably smart six years later. Alexander Doig had begun operating buses in 1909 and ran services from Greenock in the 1920s. In July 1931 his three services were sold to Greenock Motor Services and the fleet refocused on coaches. MGB 277E was a Leyland Leopard PSU3/3R/Plaxton Panorama C47F that was purchased new by Cotter’s Tours of Glasgow in June 1967. Bernard Cotter began operating coaches in 1930 and found a niche in the market by offering tours for religious pilgrims to Lourdes and Rome.

Photographs could be good quality photographs from the North East area from years gone by, or North East vehicles which have continued in further service elsewhere. If you have two photos of the same vehicle with different operators, two photos of different vehicles in the same fleet with the same fleet number, or two photos taken in the same location but a number of years apart, then these would be suitable for our ‘Double Take!’ feature.
