Painted at a time in the 1 8 th century when the prevalent and popular manner was that better known to us by the works o f the notable Frenchmen, Largillibre, Nattier, De Troy and others, these two painters caught something o f the naivété and grace which marked the productions of these men. In so clear a degree is this observed, not so much in genre, as in portraiture, that the presumption is, although it is not on record, at any rate as regards Pilo, that they must both have studied at some time in the French capital. N o other painters of note, indigenous to the soil o f Denmark, had allowed their sense of grace such freedom to so express itself.

Picturing the Resurrection herman du toit he power of images cannot be underestimated. Inspired works of art speak to us across the centuries, T across cultures, and across national boundaries. This is because inspired art has the power to visualize and articulate the spiritual. One of the ways the artist serves the viewer is to offer an interpretation or a personal vision of a particular event, and this in turn compels us to consider and reevaluate our own ideas and concepts. We may or may not agree with a particular representation, but the very act of looking causes us to test our own interpretations and preconceived ideas. More important, however, as we are drawn into the artist’s vision of a religious event, we come to realize for ourselves the truth behind what is being depicted. In this process of discovery, concepts are clarified, new meanings are instilled, and understanding is imparted. Often much can be gleaned from a comparison of different artists’ works on the same subject. The following selection of artists’ works provides an opportunity for powerful insights into the seminal events that took place immediately following Christ’s Crucifixion. 185 Fig. 1. Carl Heinrich Bloch, The Burial, ca. 1873. The Museum of National History on Frederiksborg Castle. Courtesy of Intellectual Reserve, Inc. Carl Heinrich Bloch, a nineteenth-century Danish painter, in his work titled The Burial (fig. 1), depicts the moment that the Lord’s limp body is about to be lifted into the sepulchre. On the right we see Joseph of Arimathea gesturing into the dark recesses of the tomb as the small group of grief-stricken 186 “behold the lamb of god” onlookers bow their heads in mute acknowledgment of the tragic, unforeseen, and horrible events which took place that afternoon.

Wise or Foolish Women in Mormon Biblical Narrative Art Jennifer Champoux isual imagery is an inescapable element of religion. Even those Vgroups that generally avoid figural imagery, such as those in Juda- ism and Islam, have visual objects with religious significance.1 In fact, as David Morgan, professor of religious studies and art history at Duke University, has argued, it is often the religions that avoid figurative imag- ery that end up with the richest material culture.2 To some extent, this is true for Mormonism. Although Mormons believe art can beautify a space, visual art is not tied to actual ritual practice. Chapels, for exam- ple, where the sacrament ordinance is performed, are built with plain walls and simple lines and typically have no paintings or sculptures. Yet, outside chapels, Mormons enjoy a vast culture of art, which includes traditional visual arts, texts, music, finely constructed temples, clothing, historical sites, and even personal devotional objects. For Mormons, these material items facilitate personal introspection, help mediate with the divine, and bring the believer closer to God. In part because visual culture is inescapable, it not only accompanies religious practice in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but also has the power to shape belief, influencing the way Mormons tell scriptural stories and understand doctrinal lessons. As Herman du 1. • Hans Christian Andersen and the City of Parisi
Hans Christian Andersen and the city of Parisi Kristina Junge Jørgensen Lecturer, Strasbourg University Abstract Hans Christian Andersen visited Paris 8 times, and if we compute these journeys, he spent in all about 10 months in the French capital. In this paper, I examine the importance these journeys have had on Andersen’s literary production. I describe four different themes in which Andersen portrays the French capital: Paris on the Grand Tour, Paris as the city of theatre, Napoleon’s Paris, and the Metropolitan Paris. There’s no doubt that for Andersen, Paris was the city that had it all. In several of Andersen’s works and letters, he refers to Paris as the “city of the cities.” This expression is constantly used today when the Danes talk about Paris. In my article, I argue that the Danes might have inherited this expression from Andersen as he was the first one to name Paris “the city of cities” in a publication in Denmark. Introduction Hans Christian Andersen visited Paris 8 times, and if we compute these journeys, he spent in all about ten months in the French capital. He went to Paris for the first time in 1833, at the age of 28, and his last journey to Paris was in 1870, at the age of 65, so the journeys were spread over most of his lifetime. These journeys were a source of inspiration in his writing and in this paper, my focus is how the city of Paris is represented in his works. The travels to Paris The first journey to Paris in 1833 was a part of Andersen’s Grand Tour of France and Italy; at that time, he was just an unknown young man with literary ambitions who was waiting for his breakthrough as a writer.

  • Alternative Female Roles in the History Paintings of Kristian Zahrtmann
PERSPECTIVE Alternative Female Roles in the History Paintings of Kristian Zahrtmann During his lifetime, Kristian Zahrtmann (1843-1917) painted many works portraying women from the world of history and literature. What happens when the image is turned "upside down" with a queer interpretation of masculinity and performance? By Rikke Zinck Jensen Published July 2019 RESUMÉ A corpulent elderly Aspasia, an arse-warming, pipe-smoking Queen Christina, and a naked Susanna standing on her hands: Kristian Zahrtmann’s (1843-1917) history paintings of women are unlike most from the minds and hands of his contemporaries. Zahrtmann oen depicts women in unconventional and ambiguous ways, contravening the beauty ideals and art-historical traditions of his time. is article offers a queer look at Zahrtmann’s historical images of women, examining their complexity, paradoxes and potential for criticising norms. ARTICLE During his lifetime, Kristian Zahrtmann (1843-1917) painted many works portraying women from the world of history and literature. He is particularly known for his paintings of Leonora Christina Ulfeldt (1621-1698), the daughter of King Christian IV who spent nearly 22 years of her life in prison. From 1870 to 1914, Zahrtmann produced more than 20 paintings of the king’s daughter, in addition to a number of drawings and sculptures.1 With these images, Zahrtmann played an instrumental role in the creation of the myth of Leonora Christina– and, to some extent, in the creation of the myth of himself. 1 Fig. 1.
